- Spotted Quail-thrush (Cinclosoma punctatum) are shy, insectivorous, ground-dwelling birds found in open forest down Australia's east coast.
They really like rocky hillsides and lightly-forested ridges with lots of leaf-litter, clumps of grass and low shrubs.
Not a bird I've encountered, or even heard of. Stunning colour scheme. Hard to believe it works as camouflage.

great story Gav and thanks for the tip about remaining in the car and letting them come towards the vehicle...I've been frustrated when spotting them when walking only to have them 'fly the coop' before getting a decent look...bring on the next one
These quail are so beautiful and very delicate in their movements unless you spook them.
Hi! The birdsounds woke my cats. 😊 it is a really beautiful bird. My grandma used to keep qauil in her big birdhouse. I find them very endearing. Thank you for the upload and I hope soon the qauils can build their nests again in the previously burnt woods.

Hope the cat got back to sleep again! Actually these birds aren't closely related to quail. The got their name because they looked a bit like thrush-type species and acted a bit like quail. No doubt their numbers will recover. Certainly Brown Quail are recovering well, responding to the flush of new growth of herbs and grasses that follows a few months after fire, but they're notoriously fast breeders.
