- Australia's Feathertail Glider (Acrobates pygmaeus) is the world's smallest gliding mammal - about the size of a small mouse and weighing in at 12 grams.
Rare footage, shot in the wild, shows how these minuscule marsupials protect their nest hollows by closing off the entrance with sprigs of gum leaves, hauled into place with their prehensile tails. Our tiny hero's home survives an assault by a Goanna - a fearsome monitor lizard - looking for a bite-sized meal.
Shot near Batemans Bay, NSW, on Australia's south-east coast.
Very interesting ... and so cute!

that was Truly amazing I thoroughly enjoyed watching the tiny creature wish him and his mate all the best new Subscriber heard about you from meg batty
Clever little bub!
Well done. Enjoyed your video.
sweet little animal, you stalked it at night it was amazing mate 👍
I remember the 1cent coin. I thought the animal was a possum.
Here in New Zealand ,Australian low denomination coins would get into circulation and remain,as they were the same size as NZ coins and would work in vending machines.
Well, feather tails are possums, but they're the tiniest ones. The NZ coins worked perfectly in Aussie vending machines too! Coins ... the only time I ever use them now is to unlock the shopping trolly at the local supermarket. Together with paper currency, they're almost extinct in Australia. These days, if you have a wad of notes in your wallet people think you must be a drug dealer. 😄
@@possm1 We still have free trolleys at supermarkets and airports ,so they are not even useful for that.
I did come across a coffee machine in a motel the other day that require a $2 coin and no card option, but I never carry cash.
It's amazing how they carry the leaves in their curled tail. The completed nest is beautiful as well as protective. I hope the little glider finds the perfect hollow someday. :)
Thank you so much for this insightful video. We must protect their habitat before it's too late. 💚
😉👍 Very interesting, thanks! (28 meters = 91 feet!) Loved it, subscribed.
Thankyou! Wonderful!
For Megabattie...thanks!!
God I love nature 🙏🌍🙏🌸🌸🌸
Hi I came from Megabattie .this was very interesting never heard of the the feather tail glider that she can carry leaves with her tail . She looks so much like a mouse . Thank you for showing this enjoy every bit of it .
Brilliant insight into our fascinating native jewels, great informative sharing of our second smallest aussie mammal, the amazing Feathertail Glider. I could hear plenty of potential predators calling in the night too so best of luck little fella...
Indeed, there are plenty of night predators out there. I have to admit, tho, that the owls (Barking Owl, Powerful Owl) was dubbed in (sourced from the wonderful Xeno Canto), although both are common in the area. The dingo calls I recorded about a kilometre away.
Mate that was brilliant, you’ve done a really awesome job of that
Thanks Matt! Took a look at your piece on the Marbled Frogmouth. Now that is a real scoop.

I came over to watch this from the suggestion of Meg from Megabattie... what a lovely little creature! I enjoyed this very much and have subscribed! I thought my heart would stop beating when that in large lizard creature almost infiltrated the nest!! I was sure I was gonna have to see a horrible scene! Whew!! Thank you for filming the wonders of nature for people to enjoy! God bless!!
That could be rare footage of the featherweight glider. I fell in love with the tiny creature.
So cute, so clever.
Ah yes, the FeatherTAIL Glider is certainly a featherweight (or have you been a victim of the dreaded predictive text feature). Some say the Feathertail the second smallest mammal in Australia.
