Wait! Is that a _plastic_ barrel and cylinder? That makes it very vulnerable to various attacks. So how come it can claim to give Grade 1 home security? I would never use that Kwikset to secure anything more valuable than my lunch..

@@RWBHere don't worry, the only plastic is a pin-retainer, that is completely enclosed by metal.

Usually I don't leave comments - this is my first RUclips comment ever, and I'm on RUclips for more than 10 years. But I had to. I've watched several other videos, and yours was the only one that actually works. Thank you for sharing this simple, yet amazing way to fix the smartlock. You literally enabled me to lock my front door tonight!

This was me to a tee. Botched the initial program. NEVER thought I’d find a video to fix my screw up - but low and behold - found this. Thought I just tossed $45 for a wasted deadbolt but 5 minutes following this video - and I’m back in business. THIS IS THE KINDA STUFF THE INTERNET WAS MADE FOR. BROTHERS HELPING BROTHERS. Thank you to the original poster big time!

Same! Only I have the old style and everything fell apart. It took more than 5 minutes, but still less than half an hour!
This deadbolt is on a back door and I **have** the key to the door lock and it matches the deadbolt on the front door. So, I've never really cared I didn't have a key to the deadbolt for the back door. It's nice to have it fixed, though!

This is such a great video! One tip for people who might have struggled putting the tailpiece and C clamp back on. If you are forcing the C clamp on and it wont go on as easy as the video, check the opposite side. There is a small hole there that it fits correctly into. If you are struggling, you are on the wrong side, turn the cylinder 180 degrees and it will slide in as easy as the video.

I purchased 6 new Kwikset Smart Key exterior locks for my home, but I had only a 50% success rate re-keying the locks (after precisely following the instructions each time), and my children heard me use language I shouldn't use. Thankfully, this video allowed me to reset all of the inoperative locks in less than an hour's time, using tools I had at home.
The only advice I would add is to make sure that you have the tumbler oriented as shown in the video
(3:13), so that when you remove the part holding the side pins, it is facing up. Otherwise the side pins will fall out. It's not a big deal to replace them, but just a little bit annoying.
Also, when you have re-set the side pins and are making sure the side bar slides back and forth (4:00), I found that it was useful to remove and insert the key several times, checking to make sure that the side bar slides back and forth after each insertion. Once, I didn't do this, and after reassembling the lock I discovered that the key did not turn. For some reason the re-keying hadn't worked. So I had to take it all apart again.
Thanks again for a very useful video!

Awesome. I bought a house with two Kwikset keypad deadbolts that I've programmed a code, but I wanted a key in case the batteries died so I could still get in. I bought a third for the front door to replace a Schlage deadbolt and wanted them to be keyed the same, but I couldn't find an original key for the other two units. Now I can re-key them for the same key thanks to this video.

Wow, I never thought it would be that easy! Thanks so much! Somehow I messed up my Weiser Premis lock while trying to rekey it. After trying many times to turn the key while pulling it out slowly -- the Kwikset proposed method -- I gave up and called customer support. While I was on the phone with Kwikset support, waiting for the next available agent, I found this video and started watching it. I immediately hung up the phone and started removing and dismantling my lock from the front door and after following your instructions, I was able to reset the lock and reprogram it with the new key I wanted to use. It took less than 10 minutes to do so! THANK YOU SO MUCH, I was ready to put this smart lock back in the box and send it back to Amazon! Much easier that way! You saved my life!

Like others, I had goofed up when rekeying a new deadbolt, and thought i would have to buy another new one. This worked amazingly well. The only thing different for me is when I replaced the lock ring, it wasn't tight, I had bent it out while removing it. I just had to bend it tighter again so it would lock into place properly.

Yes. With the Polar Vortex, suddenly our keys weren't working on the front door. Reset the lock, and it works fine now. God Bless.

I messed up rekeying a brand new set (which explains why I needed this video, I'm an idiot.) Even I was able to reset the lock thanks to this video! I used a pair of tweezers I had laying around the house instead of the special tool. Very informative and easy to follow instructions. Thank you! You saved me much frustration!

Worked great! For anyone who tries this their first time, that slider piece will come out of the tumbler right quick. Be sitting down with a clean workspace, those little pawls are easy to lose. I was fortunate in that I already had one Kwik set on hand to practice on first.

My kwikset was a bit different but enough info on ur video to figure out mine. It had 2 C-clamp style pins but cylinder once released was same. I screwed up my rekey and this video helped get back on track. Lock oil tough to wash off hands, next time gonna wear gloves. Thx

Had a smart key cylinder similar to the one you demonstrated with. During rekeying I managed to make it not work with any keys. Without your video I would have needed to buy another lock because a locksmith would probably cost more.
    Thank you !!

thank you very much, this saved me a lot on a baldwin smart lock. bought it at an auction for 10 $ because there was no key for it, and the lock smith told the owner it could not be fixed. 10 minutes after watching this its on the door and working great 210 $ home door lock for 10 $ thanks to this video thank you very much !

Lifesaving video. I pulled a typical man maneuver, and jacked up the setting. This worked perfectly!!! Be careful when taking the silver thing off, better to have that facing up, and take the cylinder off it from above.

Thank you so much! When we moved into the house we paid a locksmith to key all the locks to use the same key. A week ago my son was bored and messed around with the rekeying tool thereby making it so our keys no longer worked. I ended up installing a cheap deadbolt I had in the garage until I could try the steps in your video. It took me a few tries to get all 5 tiny pieces lined up because they had fallen out of the one piece. After the first two attempts I couldn't get it to slide back and forth. Tried a third time and it slid back and forth so I put it all back together and now our original house key works - thanks to you! It would've been $95 to have the locksmith come out.

    Helpful.
My contractor managed to unkey a "smart" key lock, so I had to disassemble the handleset to get to the cylinder (as I figured I would) and this video helped me understand the lock mechanism so I could reset it to my key. You would think kwikset would have some advice about this process, but no...
    Thanks for the video.

We bought a new deadbolt from Home Depot and didn't realize that the package had been returned to the store by a previous buyer. We discovered this after we got home and opened the carton. I went ahead and installed it anyway, then discovered, to my dismay, that the keys that came with it didn't work. Being a Sunday night, there was no way to uninstall and return it for exchange before the store re-opened on Monday, so I decided to search the net to see if there was a workaround for the problem. Happily, I found your video. Your detailed explanation and clear pictures were just what I needed! You saved me what would surely have been a lot of hassle at the return counter. A HUGE thumbs-up to you!! Thanks!
