    This is still a massively underrated channel as most other reviews etc don't do in depth tests of the pens. I wish I had something like this before buying the surface book 2 which suffered from accuracy problems from the very beginning which was fixed on the pro 5 but never the book 2, so even today the pen is unusable. I don't imagine it's very hard to implement the same fix as they did on the pro 5 on the book 2, but Microsoft don't seem to be bothered.

      Thank you FJJ, I've been working hard to improve and learn all the things I wish I could find online and also have trouble finding other reviewers talking about the stuff I care about. I'm glad I'm able to provide that for you. I do wish Microsoft had been able to fix this, or chosen to fix this earlier. It's been such a huge problem for a long time. I'm glad they are there now, and assume there was some complications beyond my understanding or a focus that didn't include this until now. Whatever the reason it has been a shame that the quality has been so poor for so long.

    I honestly can't believe it took MS this long to address the line quality issues of their device. They marketed the entire Surface Studio (which looked gorgeous) and gave it a pen that couldn't draw diagonal lines without software correction.
    Glad that they got around to it eventually. I might actually consider a Surface device again now that they have worked this out.

      it's hard to understand why it took this long. granted, I made the pen tool with marius and we had HUGE issues with something as simple as trying to allow users to change what the side button on the pen does! sounds like the easiest task ever. nope! So who knows, maybe some reasons we don't know about. either way, I'm with you, just really glad they got to it and did a good job

    Love the SF Alpha graphic at the end. I agree the question probably comes down to software and ecosystem. I have both an iPad Pro and a Windows convertible. I prefer to bring the convertible even though the pen is not as good b/c I can do other things (productivity, 3D modeling, etc). That said, on the days I go out and I ONLY need to draw, the iPad is nice to bring b/c of the weight. The thing that makes me pause on making the iPad my primary on the go drawing tool is that I need to pay a subscription for CSP for the once or twice a month (if even that) that I'm drawing on the go. Procreate is nice, but not as convenient as using CSP to switch my workflow between my iPad and PC.

    Thank you for showing an actual comparison between the two pens. I’m always coming back to your channel to get info about the state of Surface Pen jitter because it’s often difficult to find it anywhere else. I’m glad to hear that Microsoft’s accuracy had greatly improved with the Slim Pen 2. I’m considering purchasing the Surface Laptop Studio for work, but I’m not quite sure yet.
    Are the line jitters a parallax problem? See, I work in the embroidery industry, where part of my job is to take a client’s logo/design and translate that via software into a stitch file that an embroidery machine can understand. With the type of software I use, I’m not so much drawing lines, but actually plotting points (lots of tapping), which are sometimes individual stitches. So functionally, when I tap the screen with a stylus, I need a dot to appear at that exact spot. I currently use a 2017 Surface Pro, and as you know, it suffers from parallax issues. Wearing an artist’s glove mitigates this problem quite a bit, but it’s not perfect. Working fast can still be infuriating.
    This probably isn’t the type of question you would usually get (since you’re normally discussing the problem of artists trying to draw straight lines), but I figure it’s still based on the same problem. Would I be able to tap on the screen of a Surface Laptop Studio with the Slim Pen 2 and have small dots show up on screen exactly where I tap? Thanks again!

      I got the laptop studio and it’s good for drawing and note taking in bed, pretty easy to use and easy to use on a pillow as well. Height for drawing is good. I use a tablet holder to move my computer around and the studio does fit. But the weight and attached keyboard make it less optimal in this situation. I can say as a beginner artist I started out doing digital on the Surface pro. After a few months I had to move on. I had the 2017 surface (also called the Surface 5 by some). The line jitter was just too much. I even bought the best pen on the market at the time and spent $70. That fixed a LOT over the Wacom bamboo, but it was still too much. Thank you for the extremely thoughtful overview of where we stand today; I couldn’t agree more with the points you make about both solutions having their advantages for different users. That said, a couple questions I don’t think you’ve addressed:
    1) Is the physical tip of the Slim Pen 2 about the same as the Apple Pencil? If it is thinner/thicker/more pointed that could matter for someone who does a lot of detail inking work.
    2) Parallax is not a thing on the Slim Pen 2, right? I haven’t seen any mention of it anywhere, so I assume as much. If the hover cursor is accurate, that would be a big advantage to digital painters over the Apple Pencil.
    I love my old iPad Pro but I have always watched what’s going on in Surface land with interest. I would love to have a device that not only excelled as a drawing tablet but could also function as a solid laptop and gaming machine. Happy to see the Surface come into its full potential as an art device, I just wish Microsoft still offered several grades of pen tip replacement to customize the feel of the Surface Pen on the display.

    • @TabletPro
      @TabletPro  2 года назад +4

      The tip of the slim pen 2 is really similar to the tip of the second gen apple pencil. it's more pointed than the Apple pencil 1. It is very nicely tapered so it's pretty easy to see what's going on under the pen in general.
      The hover cursor is accurate and can be turned on and off in the windows ink settings. You will most likely really like how it behaves. It does not slightly adjust based off tilt from what I can tell, but the lines still go where I expect them to go.
      The Studio is shaping up to be a dream machine for me (yes, still wish it was the next step up in gpu) but as someone else said here. a decent gaming machine and a BEAST of a drawing machine. That's accurate. SOOOOOO NICE to draw on.

      @@TabletPro Yeah, seriously! I loved everything about the surface pro except the line quality. I remember trying to draw an eye (tiny detail, without zooming in), and noticed the pen was not putting the curser where I put the pen - it was appearing "close" to the pen tip in random locations. That's when I learned about the slow angle jitter test. It seems every year or two I stop by a MS store and test, only to find the jitter still there. I ended up using an old lenovo helix 2nd gen for a long time. Actually, I still have it - still works great. But it can't even run rebelle 2 without some serious lag.

    I had a Windows Tablet with AES pen and used CSP as my art program. It was solid overall, but a lot of that was CSP making corrections for line quality. When that tablet started to slow down/die after about 4 years, I went to Best Buy and tested all the Windows options and the iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil 2. I went with the iPad Pro because it was such a better drawing experience than anything Windows had at the time. Almost 2 years later with my iPad Pro and I can safely say, the ecosystem is not slow, it has a lot of options still. I use both Procreate and CSP. CSP is everything it was on my Windows tablet, but with a better pen now. Honestly, I like the iPad version better because it has additional touch controls that feel more smooth than anything Windows had.
    That being said, I don't like the OS as a whole. It's fast, much faster than anything I've ever done on Windows, but it's also awkward. Unless you completely buy in to the ecosystem, transferring files, and working with 3rd part apps is not the best experience. My wife uses a Windows PC and I recently got a Macbook Pro for work. We've had a OneDrive account for years, and implementing it into Mac has been a pain. The support is technically there, but Apple likes to make it as hard as possible, and I can't use it to backup my iPad, which means I'm either also paying for Apple Cloud, or just not backing up much data.
    The point to my long rant, it really comes down to ecosystem. Both are fast enough, though I'd give the edge to Apple in speed with the highly controlled and optimized IOS. But in my opinion Windows has the more robust ecosystem that allows for more user control. It's a matter of what you need and want. Now that the slim pen 2 is out, if I were to make the choice again today, it would be a much harder choice. For me it comes down to what I use the iPad for. Now that I have my Macbook pro, the iPad is really just a sketchbook and occasional consumption device. If I needed a full computer, the SP8 would be an easy choice. IOS has too many weird workflow issues to use as my only computer. But where I am now, I'd still take the iPad pro strictly for art.

      Thank you James, I really agree with you. It USED to have to do with a lot more,... but now it has a lot to do with what you are using the device for. Just sketching or painting??? CSP and Procreate can get it done and with gusto. Longer battery life??? yeah iPad is the better choice. Brighter screen, or outdoor work?? iPad. Only using one device for ALL of your work,.... then we start setting the split. Editing video or 3D? Surface. Totally depends on the scenario. Good points here

      @@TabletPro Pro 8 and Laptop studio have a new G6 touch controller. That's upgraded HW so older devices won't be able to get these improvements.

      Fairly confident the G6 chip is in the pen itself. I don’t know what other components are needed though to make it work. I’m sure there is other parts but it wasn’t really clear.
      The slim pen 2 on the box says the 7+ is compatible. So what do they mean by compatible? I’m guessing part of the necessary components are already on some of the other devices via some hardware change to the screen. Not sure what though. And I would have sworn the book 3 and pro 7 would have been on that list.

      On my Surface Pro 7+ which is supposed to be compatible I don't have either the haptics or the improved line quality. It would be nice if we could get a response from Microsoft on when and what is supported or meant by the word "compatible"

      @@TabletPro That would be worth mentioning to others-right now I can’t even charge the Slim 2 because apparently it needs a firmware update to the standalone USB-C charger. Do you have that issue as well - can you only charge with the Studio?

    I really like this video. All the mac vs windows is just question of preferences. I have surface pro 4 and want to upgrade for past years but the old surface pen and the minor upgrades were holding me back. Was considering buy a classic laptop + bt wacom intuos pro tablet that can connect also to my desktop, or buy ipad pro with apple pencil 2. Had this discussion about the upgrade on one drawing live stream and the dudes just generally flamed anything that is not ipad without facts or explain. Some people say they don't need the advanced options they just want to open the app and sketch or draw. For me the 1500$ device could do more than just basic operations and limited apps. Or for for the money I could just have lifetime paper supply to sketch on 😂 So far the surface pen improved this much and you can partially upgrade your tablet now, use external graphics and run generally anything... ..the surface seems great all in one option.

      yes, I agree 😊 was just making fun of how many "mac vs windows" conversations aren't typically well balanced, mature and frequently jump to personal attack. I think the ability to have meaningful conversation with someone you completely disagree with, but do so while still respecting them as a person is a rare, but extremely important skill. We could avoid most conflicts just by knowing how to honor a person we disagree with, with an understanding that we too, will change our minds on various important topics as we mature.

    Amazing artist reviews because of attention to detail from Artist perspective. What about the tip/nibs? Is there different types for SlimPen2 or replacement?
    Also with Win11 Android support: Do you know any apps that will work well with SlimPen2 on Surface Pros or speculate on such apps in Android for notes and for art?
    Keep up the good work. Great to hear about both pens. The joke about dating is good!

    • @TabletPro
      @TabletPro  2 года назад +2

      I'll have to do a little research on the tips/nibs, there isn't an extra one in the box, the nib is pretty solid, meaning, not likely to break like some of the other style of stylus tips. the texture on the screen is pretty good too. it's not an extreme of anything, not super plasticky and not super grippy. I wouldn't mind a little bit more of the elastic polymer feel from the sp 2017 model stylus. (grey rubbery tip)
      I'm not sure on android support and how that all behaves. is there a specific android app that you are excited about? I have a hard time picturing any andriod app being a better choice than what is currently offered in the windows eco system. I'd be interested to learn more about them though. 😊

I do like the slim pen 2 significantly more then the slim pen and consider it better than the Apple Pencil in all but line quality. Like quality I think the Apple Pencil is just a half notch better. But bother very usable and both very good.
