    One thing I really appreciate about this video is that you demo something people would actually play. I get that people play different kinds of music, but I hate tutorials that only demo some weird way or genre I’d never even touch on the bass.

    Really good demo man. No nonsense and good quality. My only suggestion would be to try out a pick too. I think a short scale with flats played with a pick is one of the juiciest tones.

      Agreed, some stuff cannot be fingered properly. That... I need a shower after that line, hopefully this detours its meaning, not at all. Came off a bit dirty... pick works for punk and super progressive metal stuff, where not even Claypool could thump fast enough with fingers.

    Well done video! I found this as I was actually considering putting the chromes on the exact same bass to replace the stock Fenders. I'm not a flats guy on most of my basses as I play brighter styles and slap but want a round more vintage tone on this bass and they sound perfect and should do nicely - thanks. Edit - I'll add that I never like the J pickup soloed on my basses with rounds (nor in your video) but it sounded great with the Chromes. I'm excited for that change.

  • @bedroomstudios2614
    @bedroomstudios2614 5 лет назад +7

    Both set of strings sound awesome and your playing helps a lot! But I'd say that Roundwounds go better with any Precision bass to accentuate the sound. Flatwounds sound more balanced when you have a jazz bass or use the jazz pickup only. Nice video.

    Thanks for the thorough comparison.
    I listened without looking and quickly came to the conclusion that I actually prefer the “first one,” which is of course the round-wound.
    It seems like all the cool kids are obsessed over flatwound strings right now - and I do love a good bandwagon, lol - but the rounds are just so much more versatile. You can roll off the highs, you can play the P (or in my case, the neck) pickup - in other words, you can mellow the sound. With the flats, you can’t so easily “add” high-end frequencies; even with the tone set at 100%, playing near the bridge, etc., it’s what it is and nothing more - if that makes sense.

    • @TheEchomaker
      @TheEchomaker 2 года назад

      I'm feeling the same way about rounds being more versatile. Flats sound better with the tone rolled up but gets buried in the mix when rolled down. I tend to be someone who likes to roll their volume and tone knobs all the way up and leave it, but it would take minimal effort to roll off those highs with the tone pot. One could also swap the value of their tone pot or wire a capacitor to the pre-existing one to limit its upper range. It also not difficult to swap the strings out for flats, but bass strings aren't cheap and I only tend to change my strings when they sound dull, in which case the rounds would last much longer. All that being said, I've never tried flats and wonder how they feel. I also see how it would bring a short scale instrument back some of that lost girth, especially if you go up a gauge.

    Thank you, this really helped as I purchased and just received my Fender Mustang Bass. I am the bass player for our Praise Team and have been playing a Fender Jazz Bass which I LOVE the sound but it is heavy for me and with the long neck... I think the round wounds have more low end and are punchier (more noticeable in the lower register of the E string). Maybe it has something to do with the round wounds being medium gauge and the flats being light gauge. Or maybe the action or pickup placement needs to be adjusted to compensate for the gauge difference. Comparing rounds and flats of the same gauge would be better. I just picked up one of these basses and thought of changing the strings, but I think it sounds OK with the factory strings.

    Tyler great comparison and playing, if there was one SS string that you could pick to play classic rock and perhaps tone down for a jazzy feel which strings would be worth exploring for a Mustang ? I mainly play with a pick, for your reference. My bass came with the Fender stock 40-95 Roundrounds, which are okay. I like the sound of these Chromes here, but wanted to get your thoughts on other option, JHS, Rotosound etc. It's a black hole out there when it comes to strings, Cheers

    Seriously eyeballing this as an alternative to finding a beater Rickenbacker 4003. The short scale really gives it a nice growl. Honestly, this bass sounds pretty good with both sets of strings on every setting, even with tone rolled all the way off, which is usually anathema to me. Hate tone knobs. Definitely would have been good to do the same set of clips with a pick, but I get that would have been a day's more work. Cheers!

    I notice that with the rounds u tend to vary the place where ur right hand picks the string, but with the flats, u primarily stay in one spot (in relationship to where the bridge is). Is this to pull different tone out of the string (due to more tension near the bridge) while ur playing, to compensate for some string vibration and buzzing issues, or just some subconscious unrelated anomaly? I'm primarily a guitar player and singer, but also play bass and drums as needed, or just because it's fun to play and I like it. With guitar, it makes a big difference how and what u use to play the note. With bass, I like to use a pick made from the backing of a P90 pickup (Jason Lollar made it) for more consistency. I haven't really experimented as much with strings and things on bass though. Thanks
