Enjoyed the video anytime we can find a way to utilize what’s available on the homestead is definitely a plus congrats guys, but using those power tools with no safety glasses and hearing protection maybe a respirator is taking chance, thanks guys
We use a plastic bin for composting, just like you did except on a smaller scale, and we also only put holes on the lower sides. However, I think a compost bin works better when the holes are on the bottom so that worms can come and go as moisture is available in the ground and in the bin.
Nice job. Maybe you can consider to cut and drill plastic on a hard surface. That way you can clean it up easier and it wont be lying in your grass forever :)
My girlfriend and I built a compose bin out of cement blocks in the shape of an " E " but with 3 bins instead of 2 bins. We made sliding tracks for the front with individual boards so you can add boards as it fills. After the first bin fills, you rotate into the second bin , then continue to move to the third bin. The first bin always starts the starter, and the third bin is the ready to use bin. This makes a ton of compose a year. She loved it because it was always rotating and keeping the finished compose separate and ready to go. It was about 3 to 4 feet high with a sand base. We had so much fun and laughs building this thing.
Great idea. I may try this myself. Two suggestions, Put it under an overhang somewhere to keep extra rain out and paint the plastic black to heat up faster when the sun hits the container.
Watching you two working together is like watching a choreographed dance. You are in synch!! It shows you are used to working together for many years and that you have a basic compatibility with each other. Job well done🎉
You might paint your composter black, also put some landscape fabric over the uncovered top of the compost to help keep it from drying out and keep fly larva out
Once the contents get thoroughly wet, put the plastic top back on it to both keep it from drying out and to keep the rain from leaching a lot of the nutrients out of the drainage holes you put in the bottom.
Painting the outside of the plastic will keep the uv rays from breaking down the plastic as fast not painted. Or keep it out of sunlight most of the time.
You two are so creative! Yes, compost bins increase temperatures! Yes, you have most of the science right! However, several of your other fans said what I was going to say; paint that BLACK! May the LORD continue to prosper and help you. I have learned a lot from you (mostly in the kitchen) and I love to see all the lovely details that I miss from childhood. My "farm" is just a small back yard garden now. But I still grow and preserve what a 75 yr. old can. I get joy watching everything you show on your videos.
Great video as usual. I have one little suggestion that is to do the composting under cover so that it can heat up to high temperatures and breakdown much faster.
I love you both with all my heart so please don't hate me, and I hope I am wrong, but this tote won't hold up for what you are trying to do with it. I have worked with these totes for years and they have always let me down with a multitude of projects. Again, maybe I am wrong, but I would hate to see you spend so much time on a project that doesn't help you on the homestead. Best wishes and I really enjoy your channel!
I know that this Idea isn't for everyone, but it's been great for me. We have a garden patch that's partitioned off... maybe 30x100 feet. Over the past 4 years I have spread tens of thousands of pounds of wood chips, grass clippings, chicken manure, and anything organic that comes off of our 18 acres. If I want it to look pretty, I run over it with my zero turn lawn tractors. We have reduced several feet of material into tons of fine compost without any watering or turning ...no maintenance. No piles. No bins. People don't even know what it is. I grew massive tomatoe plants in this patch last summer without watering or weeding or fertilizer...even through the drought we had here in central Missouri.
Hi Kevin and Sarah. Great job! Here’s an idea if you find too much compost falling out of the gap as it breaks down…Try taking out those bars and flipping your lid upside down. It might just slip in there perfectly. Then just place your straps appropriately for the new position of the lid. It may possibly eliminate that gap altogether. I’ve done this with other types of containers for projects around the house, and it has always worked great. Worth a try. 😊
Great idea. It may leak excess water when tipped over, but as I understand making compost, you don't want any standing water, just wrung out sponge damp soil. If it's going to leak, capture it. It's liquid gold you are just dumping on the ground. Great idea.
Love the compost bin. Great idea! But, my favorite, and long awaited part of the video, was finally getting to see the porch. I love all you guys do. Love, and God bless.
Since you plan on leaving the top off except to turn it, consider chaining it or fastening it to the cage so the wind or some wild thing doesn’t make off with it . I love watching y’all brainstorm
Kevin & Sara. Hey there. Make the same portable composter with no drain holes & no lid. when manure & rain water fill it---you will have compost tea (fertilize) to put on plants. An overflow drain into container will catch over flow liquid. Use tea as needed. You can move container with tractor to the hot house. Just a thought & if you do not like the idea trash it. I love you. Dewayne Willis
You might want to consider making some large wheels out of 1 inch conduit and bolt them to the ends of the cage so you could simply roll the entire assembly. You could also make a ground mounted frame with wheels to set the assembly in so it will remain in one spot when you rotate it. I think it’s a great idea to utilize the tote for a large composter and I think I will build one for our use.
We remove plastic tub, cut in half, put half plastic tub back into cage for our potted plants set up with a timer & fill other empty cages with with split firewood, works like a charm. We use our tractor with the fork attachment to move the cages. We haven’t tried using plastic tub for compost because it might get to hot causing plastic fumes. Will be following for updates, hopefully it works out. Note- it might be a good idea to mark the lid with the bottom tub to know how it goes back on, good luck!
You want soldier fly larva in your compost! I left the cover off mine and they helped speed up the process of decomposition! Thier larva look different than regular fly larva. Just open it up they will come. IMO your holes on the bottom are too big but what you could do is put a container there to catch the run off. It will be rich fertilizer for whatever you choose.
Beautiful herd, guys. Kevin, when you feed hay, lay the bale round side up and it will repel rain better instead instead of soaking it up - makes a bale last a bit longer with less waste.
You can always empty into piles by the outside garden to perk... then start filling up again, then empty by the hothouse garden. The ducks and chickens will enjoy adding to your composter..clever idea so you can easily pick up items all over the farm😊
IBC tote composter: I took one and cut in 1/2, I don't move it as we don't have a tractor, plus I'm short. I only use the bottom part as the composter, and the original drain valve works just fine, never gets clogged. I add cardboard between layers as the cover. just an idea, i used the top half under my rabbits to catch poop for easier clean up.
I use one similar but use 2 one empty. I like your approach. My suggestion is to add more ventilation holes for air flow. But smaller than your drainage holes. Maybe 1/2”. Or so.
You could do one with water and comfrey! Then you can use the tractor and just pick it up and take it all over the homestead. Use the spectate and fertilize to your heart content.
I’m watching this in a break from housework. I’m in NZ and summer is just gearing up. It’s very warm and humid today, we live in an area that gets high humidity anyway and I’m lying with the AC on! Just seeing you with those warm jackets on is making me hotter! Love your videos, you always make me happy I have watched. Xxx I sometimes think pet animals name themselves, given a little time. Ralph the calf, very nice. Our meat steers were called Sausage, Casserole and Billy.
Love this idea! I can't wait to share this with my husband so we can utilize this idea and use one of these containers just sitting around on our homestead:) Thank you for sharing your ideas!!
Think you’ll need some air holes near the bottom or it will go anaerobic. You want a fresh supply of oxygen to feed to good microbes. This makes more heat too and helps break down everything faster. Anaerobic is slow and stinky just like a septic system! Take care!
Somehow I missed when you added the front decking. It looks good. I like your problem solving and coming up with great beneficial projects for your homestead.
We just brought our cattle home a couple of weeks ago from pastures here in South Dakota. We usually try to have hay for the next two to three years just in case we have a dry year or two. We are known to have drought years here. This year has been a good year with grass still in the pastures and the weather is milder than normal right now!
Hi I believe a 3:1 ratio of green material to dry material helps . If too wet it will smell like ammonia. My composter, a barrel type on a stand. has screens over the aeration holes to keep pests out. It will be interesting to follow this project. good luck
Thank you, two. Several months ago, I thought to myself. Boy, they are both looking fabulous! Then I found out about Keto. Well, I lost 6 lbs in 10 days. + I drink 1.852 gallons of water a day. Always have. I feel great. I'm 132 lbs, & 5' 6" tall. I'll just continue. $8 for 1 lb Almond flower tho. Jeez. (A just-in-caser). Thanks again. ✝️ nurse Judi in Scottsdale AZ and Eucharistic Minister
If ypu build another, consider outfitting the tote with spikots capable of screwing either a garden hose or white PVC pipe into plus a collection system for the compost tea. We use IBC totes for our rain water collection system, plastic, hot tub valves, and PVC pipe. The plastic hot tub valves are prone to breaking when we get a deep freeze; they would probably do the same in your srea.
I watched a video on composting and they said if air can get all around 12 inches. You don't need to flip it or stir it. I tried this in a garbage can with a large piece of French drain down the middle. It worked fantastic. Kevin maybe you could put 2 pieces inside this and fill around them. I drilled holes in the sides for airflow.
What gorgeous Herefords you have-some nice genes you have there. But, gee, since you maneuver that hay loader so well, I’d be very tempted to use it to turn a very large compost pile.
When I did mine, I cut each corner about 2-3" down vertically to allow the pieces to fold in a little so that it would slide over the other pretty easy. Makes a great seal when done this way. You could notch the bottom piece alone so the top slides over the bottom as a cover for the rainy days.
When you say a bale of hay, I reflect back on my younger days when I would throw a bale of hay. It might help this old lady if you were to refer it to a role of hay. Unless everything has changed and I’m too far behind. LOL🤣. I just love your videos and to watch you sweethearts work together.
Well Kevin, you have inspired me on this one! You do want to keep your compost bin covered. But, with a permeable 'something" that will let rain in. The reason you want to cover is to make sure it maintains the heat. That is what kills off the seeds, and pathogens on your compost. The cows are beautiful! 😃😃
Ya gotta moisten it, and keep it moist. And if it is too heavy to roll around, then get up on tractor scoop and use pitchfork to toss it around some. every time you moisten it, it will cook some more and shrink down. Good job guys.
Very interesting, being raised in the country, this is the kind of milk we drank, I remember how good it was. Some people don’t even know where milk comes from. I would love to have a big glass of your milk and some good ole corn bread. God bless you guys, I have been following you for 5 years or more.
i dont think you will end up liking the ibc tote composter at all. i think the best to do is just make a compost station. not using any kind of container. just start a pile on your land somewhere constantly adding to it. just flip/mix it every couple three days or so with a pitchfork. then when your pile gets to big. just start another one. I seen a setup where a guy had a bunch of piles that were divided by used pallets. was a pretty sweet setup. and his piles would be at different stages so it made it easy to just grab a scoop with the tractor.
I would add another bin to collect the "compost tea" and reuse that fluid to help speed up the process. As it is recycled it gets stronger. That & it could generate some income, selling the concentrate.
I saw a video where they used latches with screws and bolts to secure the top lid and lid lifts up but you can close and secure it. they didn’t cut the whole top off though, just a section or maybe half the top.
Two things 1. Don’t forget to also include your ash from the wood burning stove! That’s super important for great compost! Green stuff, dried leaves, ashes plus dung. 2. The opening will allow outgassing of methane from compost. It unfortunately will allow flies access as well! You may want to reconsider having an opening that allows flies to come and go?! People have been using devices to capture methane as an energy source, btw. It helps to control methane emissions because that helps the planet as well from heating up!
the woody plant stems would contain a lot of carbon so the carbon-nitrogen ratio would necessitate much more green/ manure stuff than you have there I think. I would omit the woody stuff and add more compostable browns like leaves, hay. I love yall's house place. It is so beautiful and has wonderful views. We watch ya'll all the time and could not be happier for you.
Not only are you going to have great compost, but the farm is going to look neat and clean. I'd give you a prize for the best looking homestead.
Enjoyed the video anytime we can find a way to utilize what’s available on the homestead is definitely a plus congrats guys, but using those power tools with no safety glasses and hearing protection maybe a respirator is taking chance, thanks guys
I completely agree with one exception. The sprout house could use a little love...same color as the house 💚
@@jettabartholomew1118And paint the awesome porch on the house white. Jmo 😉
I remember seeing Jason and Brooke doing their compost this way.
We use a plastic bin for composting, just like you did except on a smaller scale, and we also only put holes on the lower sides. However, I think a compost bin works better when the holes are on the bottom so that worms can come and go as moisture is available in the ground and in the bin.
Ralph is so adorable with his spotted face and long eyelashes :) Can't wait to see the composter.
Such a pretty sight to see the cows enjoying the hay!
Add some newspaper or burlap to bottom of tank to cover holes in bottom...retains particles of potential soil while allowing moisture to drain....
Nice job. Maybe you can consider to cut and drill plastic on a hard surface. That way you can clean it up easier and it wont be lying in your grass forever :)
Ralph is adorable. Love his crescent moon.

Nice eagle soaring over Sara’s head during the intro!
Great engineering! You both never fail to amaze us all.
My compost bin is an old horse watering trough. 12 years of use and still working for us.
If you put the composting thing on bricks and put a bucket under the large outlet you might get compost liquid as well.
The markings and colors on the face of Babe are beautiful. Little Ralph has such a pretty face too. Love your rolling composter.
You might consider hot gluing little circles of 1/4" hardware cloth over the drain holes to keep critters from setting up house inside the bottom,
Your farm is absolutely beautiful! And the cows are just beautiful. Take Care and God Bless!❤
You might paint your composter black, also put some landscape fabric over the uncovered top of the compost to help keep it from drying out and keep fly larva out
Darker is HOTTER 🤓
Once the contents get thoroughly wet, put the plastic top back on it to both keep it from drying out and to keep the rain from leaching a lot of the nutrients out of the drainage holes you put in the bottom.

Ralph is a great name for an animal. Many years ago I had a beloved dog named Ralph

Ralph has the cutest face. Good job on the compost idea.
Kevin you are so good your ideas are wonderful with all your ideas. My Dadcwas like. Heveas my boss and I did the work
Hurry with the tractor....we have a runner! Lol. Glad that worked out.
I know that this Idea isn't for everyone, but it's been great for me. We have a garden patch that's partitioned off... maybe 30x100 feet. What a novel idea for the composter. I can't wait to see how long it works long-term. So. nice to see your frisky, happy herd too.😄
It looks like the composter will save you time with double-shovelling and hauling to a compost pile! Great idea!

Since you plan on leaving the top off except to turn it, consider chaining it or fastening it to the cage so the wind or some wild thing doesn’t make off with it .
I love watching y’all brainstorm
There are black covers you can buy that will help heat the compost to a great temp.
What a great idea, I have to say the background veiw of your land send shivers down my arms , that property is awesome guys,, Love Missouri
Ingenious idea! Please do follow ups so we can watch the progress and see if it works when filled up. Loved this video.
Love the composter idea and baby Ralph is adorable ❤❤❤

A large movable compost bin, made from a repurposed, simply modified container you already owned. Brilliant! You guys are geniuses.
I love the cow running up behind Kevin…. “come on guys, Dad’s giving us fresh hay!” & wanting to be first 🤣
They sure were excited about that hay!
We remove plastic tub, cut in half, put half plastic tub back into cage for our potted plants set up with a timer & fill other empty cages with with split firewood, works like a charm. I sure enjoy your videos! Thanks for sharing your experience. May God continue to bless your work.
Teamwork makes the dream work!! A tidy composting system!! And Ralph is just sooo handsome!!! 🐮😁👍🏻💩
That's a super way to compost! Maybe attach some sort of lanyard or something to the lid so it doesn't blow away when not installed?
Ralph is adorable. Try to make the holes so you can catch the compost tea.
My UNC uncle. Use to call that the hay bank any surplus of hay was a blessing . cows love n live to eat.
I use one similar but use 2 one empty. I like your approach. My suggestion is to add more ventilation holes for air flow. But smaller than your drainage holes. Maybe 1/2”. Or so.

what beautiful cows, they look like their fur is velvet.
I like that you can move it around to wherever you need it. Good idea.
What an excellent video. Kudos to the camera crew for the closeups! Well done!
Sorry. This posted to the wrong channel!
Xxx
I sometimes think pet animals name themselves, given a little time. Ralph the calf, very nice. Our meat steers were called Sausage, Casserole and Billy.
Aw…..the cows love their hay!! I love seeing that……sweet cows…….
Love this idea! I can't wait to share this with my husband so we can utilize this idea and use one of these containers just sitting around on our homestead:) Thank you for sharing your ideas!!
I love watching your videos. I feel like I can really relate to everything that you are doing. And I am always learning something.
I enjoyed this video so much. Its always fun seeing a plan come together. Keep those ideas going you guys! God Bless
Think you’ll need some air holes near the bottom or it will go anaerobic. You want a fresh supply of oxygen to feed to good microbes. This makes more heat too and helps break down everything faster.
Anaerobic is slow and stinky just like a septic system!
Take care!
ralf has a beautiful partial moon on his face!! soo cute!!
My kind of people. Hard working, industrious, common sense and loves God!
Genius idea! Can’t wait to hear what hacks you use on this in the future.
Great ingenuity; thanks for posting! Babe & handsome calf are fun to see, as well as the pasture herd! Blessings to all 🤗💗🇨🇦
Somehow I missed when you added the front decking. It looks good.
I like your problem solving and coming up with great beneficial projects for your homestead.
You guys are the best team. Very Inspiring! :) Team work makes the Dream work.

Thank you, two. Several months ago, I thought to myself. Boy, they are both looking fabulous! Then I found out about Keto. Well, I lost 6 lbs in 10 days. + I drink 1.852 gallons of water a day. If ypu build another, consider outfitting the tote with spikots capable of screwing either a garden hose or white PVC pipe into plus a collection system for the compost tea. Keeping the liquids and collecting them is great manure tea. The valve is easily cleared. Good luck

People don't realize that ;you have to train all animals. It is great that you start right away and it helps her be more successful.
Be sure to add green stuff. That really ignites the brown stuff. You can never have too much compost.
Those cows were hungry. Love watching y'all going around feeding the animals.
I'll never make it, but I am always interested in what you come up with to make your homestead better for your animals and your family.
Goid Morning. Hope you have a great day. Baby is so cute. Lv and Prayers all.
When you say a bale of hay, I reflect back on my younger days when I would throw a bale of hay. It might help this old lady if you were to refer it to a role of hay. Unless everything has changed and I’m too far behind. LOL🤣. I just love your videos and to watch you sweethearts work together.

Have you considered putting a separate compost pile in the chicken runs and allowing them to turn the compost for you while hunting larvae?
Ya gotta moisten it, and keep it moist. And if it is too heavy to roll around, then get up on tractor scoop and use pitchfork to toss it around some. every time you moisten it, it will cook some more and shrink down. Good job guys.
Portable compost pile. Too Cool!

Or you'll have a Swimming pool in Spring in MN. Joy! 🎄

I agree. Since he is on a farm he can leave space between the piles to allow access for turning the pile withe the tractor bucket.
I'd only use metal. Manure loves to catch fire and in that plastic you'd have an awful mess on your hands.
I just love your cattle!
What a fantastic idea!!!❤
You can cut 1 " slits in every corner of the bottom edge of the top and the top will fit down in the tub and seal better
Ralph is my daddy’s name! I love it!
