Happy to support your generous sharing! One question: in the Glad Tidings decking video, you use a mini powered nail gun. Please describe! Thanks, Jonathan
After such a procedure, you will never be able to restore the sails, replace the bolt-rope, etc.! If you ever build or restore models for a museum - never do something that cannot be removed and restored in the future! Remember that your task is to preserve it for as long as possible, and not to destroy forever the model and its original parts, which can be hundreds of years old...
On the sails for this model you used Potato Starch, while on the Carrack you used Thinned White Glue. Do you feel one is better than the other, or are they used in different ways?
I don't use glue to form the sails, just potato starch. On both models, I fill the sails with boiled potato starch. What if you or the customer don't like the filled sails? Then again 3-6 months to sew new sails? Would it be easier to just wash off the potato starch? If it will be a museum model, then this will be the first requirement, everything must be reversible to be subject to restoration! And that's why I don't use СA glue as a main either.
I'm sorry, I mis-remembered what you used on the Carrack sails, probably remembering from another post. Thanks so much for getting back to me. Potato starch it is!
It should be the same - I usually always have powder in the kitchen, so I use it. I don't know how concentrated the liquid is! Because I make the liquid too thick...

Be careful with tea - tea is highly acidic. Also, both coffee and tea can change color from brown to gray after 2-3 years! That's why I prefer to paint with oil paints (from craft stores) or with bitumen or tar (like on real ships) - they will soak into the fabric and protect it from the environment!
Toujours la recherche de la perfection ...Super
Merci!

Diluted wood glue can be used instead of starch

Is it the starch contained in the potato starch that allows this superb curve of the sails?
thanks for the tip and for sharing.
Yes it is.
The thickly boiled potato starch creates a thin layer that holds the shape of the sail!

What liquid do you use to blacken brass?
This is fast-acting liquid "Brass Black" (Metal Finish)
It takes this color on sails left in coffee or tea.

this is why I don't build ship models lol
But you can always build in a classic style - without sails)))
