What a beautiful, inspiring house. A fitting home for the literary genius Lawrence Durrell. It must have been even more stunning back in the 1930s when Larry and Nancy lived there.
His books formed a great part of my child hood too. I loved his descriptions and the humour. They enabled him to carry out the conservation work he was so passionate about & it's this passion that flows through his writing. I also loved animals from an early age.
I'm ashamed to say I haven't yet read Prospero's Cell. My dad had the Alexandria Quartet but I would so like to read Larry's book about Corfu. His prose is pure genius and sheer beauty.
Larry and his wife Nancy lived in the White House. The rest of the family lived in another villa. I've never understood why Gerry never mentioned Nancy in his Corfu trilogy, or the fact that Larry was married to her, and that the couple lived by themselves at the White House. Possibly to make the story more interesting because then everyone would be under one roof? In fact Larry and Nancy went out to Corfu first of all and the rest of the family followed later on.
I lived in Greece for more than 6 years...It's still my second home. Now I live in Ancient Greece (near the coast in Turkey..I can see Greece from my front door).
Watch the pbs/BBC "Durrels What Happened Next". There are several interviews with the two brothers on RUclips and an earlier tv version. I'm going through withdrawl as the series just ended here!

No, he didn't. This was Lawrence and Nancy's home. Gerald's 'Strawberry-Pink Villa' and 'Snow-White Villa' were both near the lagoon that's now home to the airport. Back then there were no roads out as far as Kalami; the only approach was by boat.
