  • An overview of our fodder system, harvesting, planting, and feeding to our animals. This is the Mini Fodder Pro system from FarmTek. We plant barley seed with some black oil sunflower seed and grow for 7 days.
    We have our system in our basement where it's easily temperature controlled and we have access to water. It's also a walk-out basement so it makes it easy to get the fodder out the pastures.

    I believe this method is cheaper and much more healthier for the animals than buying hay and feed every day!

    were is the root getting the vitamins from if not in soil to pick it from. the lady that did the testing on wheat grass, tested wheat that was in the ground all season.i also do sprouts and never had this question answered. a plant pulls vitamins from the ground and soil to grow, if its being down on no soil then how does it get vitamins

    • @SueSchalk
      @SueSchalk  9 лет назад +4

      cbzombiequeen58 The seed contains everything it needs to grow. Once the seed is soaked it is no longer dormant and grows quite well, as you can see in the video, for 7 days before we feed it. We have grown hydroponic lettuce and since that does take much longer to mature, nutrients are needed. But for the short growth cycle of the barley grass, nothing but water and some light to green it up is needed.

  • @tifu678
    @tifu678 6 лет назад

    Why not just use a holding tank that will allow the well water to equalize to room temperature? Also seems like your layout makes it inefficient and labor intensive (lots of bending down and lifting heavy loads). I know it’s farming but making things easier when possible wouldn’t hurt

    Thank you for this video. The farm that you buy the barley seed do they have a website where i can purchase them from? i am trying to see what is the least cost effective method for me to send bags of barley seed to Dominican Republic. So if they have a website then i can have them deliver it to NY and then ill take care of it from there. If they dont, do you mind letting me know how much you paid for one bag so i can get an idea. Thank you once again for all you help.

    • @SueSchalk
      @SueSchalk  9 лет назад

      Wilfredo Olivo - No they don't have a website, it's just a huge farm. We purchase it by the ton and pricing depends on harvest - if they had good weather or not. Sorry, don't have a bag price. You might try www.agrivive.com/ for bulk exports of grain.

    • @SueSchalk
      @SueSchalk  7 лет назад +6

      Plain water. It only grows for 7 days then we feed it so the seed has everything it needs, no additional nutrients are needed.

      We are in South East Michigan and we get our barley straight from a farm in Owasso which is a few hours drive north of us. We prefer the fall barley over spring and reserve a couple ton each year. Then just go and get it when we need it.

      Fodder is generally fed at about 2% of body weight. Nutritionally that is about all they need, however they do require more roughage. So feed will hay or straw for bulk and roughage.
