This was great and full of useful information. We are in the first stages of trying to figure out types of seeds we need for our animals. We have Muscovy Ducks, Quail, Rabbits and chickens right now but adding pigs and cows soon. I cant wait to get the blueprint on this system and try it out. ADDING BLEACH IN FODDER SYSTEM If I lived in an area with water treatment plant, chlorine or chloramine would be in my water. When I travel or eat in a restaurant I am drinking water from a treatment plant with chlorine or chloramine. If I call well company out to service my well pump, and they open the top on the well they must add chlorine after service. Do some research about what you are drinking from the water treatment plant before you panic over a few oz of bleach in a fodder system. I find nothing wrong with the bleach for fodder it will evaporate from the bucket before added to the system.

I have not given it much thought or research. The bleach is pretty much gone in 24 hours while the seed is soaking. Lot of people have fear of the bleach but not much different than drinking water from a water treatment plant. I think its safer than most. My neighbors water from the water plant tested higher in chlorine than my fodder system.

Great video and information. My chickens consume 50% grains mix and 50% commercial pellets. I am sprouting a grain mix. I would like to give my chickens 100% of my sprouted grain mix. Thanks from the Philippines.
You are an awesome teacher and have explained everything very well. I started a fodder system at the beginning of 2015 and it worked well until summer set in (up to 117 degrees in Phoenix...). I tried building a small aquaponics system to keep it going, but it was pretty much a fail. Want to try a smaller version of your system to see if I can run it year round. +Brad Ley Wow awesome! I am speechless its people like yourself that make it all worth the time it takes to do the videos. I think you will find aquaponics is a waste of time with fodder because grass needs only water for the first 10 days to grow. Good luck

I was just looking at commercial systems two days ago. Nice design.
Christian McMahon I looked at them but the cost was just over the top for something I was not sure I was going to use. I have more than just the one in video they have been running for about 3 years. I have around $250 in the unit you see in video.
normally the public works water systems around the country have enough available chlorine in your water to kill the bacteria on your fodder seeds if you rinse it well enough at the start then maintain the temp and moisture levels you should never see bacteria in your system I've been running wheat fodder for over three years and have seen a lot of different problems just pay attention and you will overcome any problems this is not real hard if you pay attention to what you are doing and by the way you are doing a great job here enjoy
+carolyn stuckey I would test it first to make sure because mold can kill some animals. Lot of factors in public water to the amount of chlorine in the water when it reaches your home.

have you ever considered growing your fodder seed to maturity in a green house so you dont have to keep buying it . I dont know of anyone that has done it but it would be a nice experiment
+Jacob Padilla It would not be practical for me as cheap as seed is. I would rather use my greenhouse space to grow something else
If you are afraid of using bleach like it seems a lot of you are concerned just use vinegar instead.

Thanks for the info! Do you only use the bleach to wash your seeds or do you use it in the recycling water system too as I have seen that the water in the reservoir can get pretty yucky
Germaine Eyre I don't really use it in the reservoir but do top it off with the water from the seed soaking but not much in at that point
a grocery bag before y our seeds where holes have been added....might help you save on the water....or you turn the tap down...because the water just wont leak straight out....even paper bags might work better....even cardboard has space for more water....and you require less tap. All that can be bleached...or made specifically for your organic system....brown or white cardboard....one organic and one kosher...and the other no nonsense and carefree....hehe Dont discard the lids...the lids you can make holes and use inside....or you double up on a bin...and then remove the top layer and place it in a separate section or add a pilar....so now you have to rebuild your hydroponic follder system to fit the lid with several pillars....underneath...dont discard it and use the Pilar Doble Paso Fodder Toplid and Bin Fodder System...that you develop obviously...use it upside down so it holds water....and expand....no you may need two systems that run and work as one...so that means you add another fodder stand.....and each shelf needs more space...what do I know...you are perhaps more technical. I would also develop the tray withing a tray system...in other words in stead of dripping directly from each shelf down into the next bin...you create a tray that you place over each shelf....and then it drips again...but the water pressure should be lesser...right now it sounds really harsh and loud...should it be a spray....so perhaps the holes should be smaller...I don't know... I think I like sprays when I hand water my plants....otherwise you use too much water and the grass is not as green...or rather you are correct...keeping the right water pressure avoids other issues....

I had a couple questions if you are able to answer them: I know when you put to much seed in a tray you end up with lots of seeds not sprouting and seeds falling out when you go to give it to your animals can you reuse this seed and just put it back in tray 1 and sprout it? Also do you know of a way to incorporate aquaponics into this I have an interest for both aquaponics and fodder but I have yet to see anyone incorporate their fodder into an aquaponic system. Or what if I just added fish to the water bucket below the system?
+Sarah Gilmore I would not recommend fish for the fodder system. I am not sure why you would need the fish in the system? Grass can grow on pure water for about 10 days. The fish waste I think would only be problems for the system.
hi, I've made my system and been feeding only three days to chickens its been a little iffy. The problem I am running in to is a slime on un-sprouted seed and a mold at root base, I use bleach to soak seeds so I'm stumped, can you give me some ideas on what to try ? I've put to much time and effort in to it to just give up.
+pennyjohoc Use a chlorine test strip to make sure you are using enough. Next you may need to turn water to the seed back a little keeping it to damp.

So the question I can't find is can you grow the grass to seed so that this is more sustainable? I want to do this but don't want to put my energy into it unless I can reuse this system without buying more seed.
+Quantum Prepper Yes and no. Grass can live without adding nutrients for around 10 or 12 days in my fodder system after that it will start to die. So yes you could do it but not easy in a fodder system. Do you have any idea how long a 55 gallon drum of seed would last in a small system?
What kinds of sprouts can i grow for rabbits? If i grow rabbits in a basement in northern state wtf do i do with all the compost? Couldn't you just grow sprouts for local restaurateurs or co op stores and the over supply for livestock? TY mr anthony
+rRobert Smith I use barley grass seed.You spread the compost on your garden. If no garden, you will have no problem getting someone to pickup the compost. I have no idea about local restaurateurs or stores. I grow it to feed my livestock around my farm.

Well I was all for it, up until you pulled the bleach out. Is there any other way besides bleach?
Also is this just a extra thing you're feeding your rabbits, or the only thing you're feeding the rabbits?

***** It can be done without the bleach. Bleach / Sodium hypochlorite in low amounts evaporates pretty fast. One could let the seed set in the water for 2 days and it would probably be gone. With very little effort and a $10 test kit one could check a few times until they had the mix and soak time correct. I have found caged rabbits that eat fodder grow faster and have much better birth rate and survival. Rabbits need more than fodder, breeders need trace minerals plus something to grind teeth on.
Grow Dinner Aquaponics When I grew wheatgrass and other sprouts for personal consumption I used peroxide. I can't remember the percentage but it works as well. Janice
+TigerWild Vinegar is also an alternative I know apple cider vinegar can be fed to your animals so if any were to be left behind it wouldn't hurt them. Even regular vinegar is fine as well.

I've been doing fodder for some time now but I have a problem.. the grass, and rootbed, grow good on the side where the water enters the tray but at the end where the water exits into the next tray it doesn't grow very good.. I have a setup like yours.. one tray feeds the next.. it doesn't matter if it's the first tray or last.. Do you have this problem? I've tried increasing and decreasing the itlt of the tray.. thinking it was too much or too little water. I have fresh water feeding the first tray and it see-saws till the last tray..
+Larry Kindrick Sounds to me like you have a little much on the water. Two things to try need more drain holes or less water. Try that and see how it works for you.
