This is so fascinating. I am feeling a lot of pain around the war in the Middle East, and when the war started, I felt a deep-core need to connect to all things mermaid. --which is not a normal symbol for me. As "art therapy," I started world building and designing a healing, "utopian" systems-based game around mermaids. Because mermaids in art are usually light skinned, I thought they were from European mythology. But now that I know their older origins, I feel like I must be drawn to mermaids at this time for some deep ancestral archetypical reasons. Thank you for teaching me more about my own heritage. May the mermaids show us the way to more empathy and compassion!
The lover of Atargatis’ lover was actually “Ichthys” literally meaning “fish” which is either some crazy foreshadowing or she literally had a daughter with a fish and for some reason it screwed with her genetic code instead. Very nice art btw, always great to find another creator into mythology.
Thank you for the additional facts! There is SO much information about her over the course of thousands of years. Yes! Always happy to meet fellow folklore/mythology lovers 😊
