The best thing about his absolute control over that entire audience is that it wasn’t even his audience necessarily. They didn’t all go there to specifically see queen. But queen is what we all remember. That’s epic.
Yeah, I too was there....... Many years later watching the London Olympics closing when Queen performed and they played a tape of Freddie playing with the crowd, and the live crowd responded, my wife just quietly said " Oh my God, he can even do it when he's dead"
More talent in 1 hair of his mustache than many of today's artists when a group of them get together. No autotune - no pressure Freddie will smash it out, not only the park but out of orbit. Freddie - the ultimate performer. R.I.P.
There actually was pitch correction back then, just wasn’t widely used until Auto Tune was invented as a real-time pitch correction in the late 90s. Before they had digital real-time plugins, there were studio tricks engineers used. Like Queen, who had fun being experimental in the studio. Or The Beatles.
Might have been used in the studio's back in 85 but im sure it wasn't available for live performances back then. A lot of reverb and compression yes but not autotune or pitch correction, back then you needed raw vocal talent because you had nothing to hide behind and very little to mask a shit voice when you sang live.
I was born in 1944. And when rock 'n' roll hit the scene in the mid-50's, I had no interest in it. It all seemed so childish, or perhaps it was self-centered pubescence. Whatever, I paid very little attention to rock through the 50's and 60's. The Eagles got to me in the 70's, along with some others. But by and large, music for me was the classics and show tunes. Then, in 1985, I was living in Germany teaching English as a Second Language. After a long Saturday morning, I came home eager to enjoy what was left of the weekend. Once I got home, I turned on the little black and white TV I had been lent in hopes of finding something I could understand enough to enjoy. What I came across was the Live Aids broadcast from Wembley Stadium I shrugged and watched. Almost immediately, Queen was on stage. For the next 20 minutes I was glued to my seat, absolutely dumbstruck by Freddie Mercury's performance. In the wake of this extraordinary experience, I learned to appreciate a good deal better just what rock had to offer. My horizons were most happily expanded. And I still think of the Wembley experience and Queen as an epiphany, my own little satori. It's a memory I treasure still and always will.
You were not alone. As the only Queen fan among my friends I bathed in their adoration of the performance on that day. Never met anyone who disagrees that they owned Live Aid. Maybe the best Live performance of any band ever?

OK I'm old, I saw Queen live 5 times. Live Aid, to this day it's the largest concert ever held. It was in aid to raise money for the Ethiopian Famine in the early 1980's. At the time of Live Aid I was serving in the British Royal Marine Commandos in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. We listened to it on the radio. We were surrounded be the horror of the Famine, but when Queen came on the radio those poor soles who were there even reacted in a very positive way. I remember that a lot of us Royal Marine Commandos were crying watching some of the children dancing along, I'm teary eyed just remembering. I looked around at men I had fought alongside, who were tough, hardened Royal Marine Commandos who I had fought along side in a war against Argentinian's in 82. By the end of Queen's set we were dancing with the children. It went along way to help build their trust in us. The famine is one of the two worst memories I have. I only watched it for the first time last year, my son put it on the TV. A lot of memories came back and a lot of tears.
It was certainly the largest TV audience but the largest live audience to be at a concert ( and this shocked the hell out of me) was Rod Stewart in 1993 on Copacabana Beach with 4.2 million
Thanks for the memory Royal. From ex bootneck who was also in the battle for the Falklands, another distant memory. Now an old vet in Cyprus enjoying the peace and quiet, and the noisy Queen concert, that converted me to their music.

That Queen was probably the most educated rock band ever. Freddie Mercury - degree in Art & Graphic Design, Roger Taylor - Biology, John Deacon - Electronics & Brian May - Astrophysics (& recently completed his doctorate after a 30-year hiatus).
One of the most educated. Genesis was another band chock full of educated blokes. Steely Dan, among the Americans. Come to think of it, there's a lot of them. It kinda shows in their music too. What an era.
I saw a quote somewhere along the lines of, 'there's cool and then there's lead guitarist in one of the worlds greatest rock bands and a Phd in Astrophysics cool'.
The hardest part of watching reactions to Queen performing live is having to constantly remind yourself to stop watching Freddie and watch the reaction!
72 thousand people all going to the concert to see the bands they love not particularly Queen ( Bowie for me ) and Freddie Mercury had the whole 72 thousand people eating out of his hand. I never looked at Queen the same way. Unbelievable front man, first time seeing him on stage and he got me right in the heart. A true entertainer. R I P Freddie. ❤️
It is incredibly rare when you can point to a single moment in time, and say "This was their greatest moment." It's even rarer when that moment was captured in its near perfection, and you can watch it again, 35 years later. This was the moment Queen gave the greatest live performance in rock history, and at that moment, there WERE no other rock bands. There was only Queen.
The Who, The Kinks, The Jam, Madness, Deep Purple, Genesis. Just to name a few. While these weren't necessarily Queen and Bowie level they were still legendary in their own right.
@@evieaddy9580 But for many of them, their greatest concerts weren't recorded, or weren't recorded in full. And even then, think how many performers there have been since the late 1960's alone, and how many of them had a moment like this? Almost none. Maybe a handful more than the bands you listed, and even then most probably weren't recorded, or broadcast live to the entire world.
@@evieaddy9580 Still doesn't invalidate what I said. I didn't say nobody else had done it, just that it was incredibly rare. And "many" is a bit... exaggerated. Maybe one band in a hundred, or even a thousand did.
I think one of the most amazing things about this, is that most people gathered, merrily singing Queen songs, were fans of other groups. This was Live Aid, charity, and a lot of people were secretly waiting to see how well Queen would do without a fan base, without flashing lights and theatrics. And they just went in there, ruled the stage and everyone turned into a fan.

And whenever I think of Freddie I automatically think of my dad and they are somehow connected to me... I love and always will love Freddie! The world, the music industry lost the greatest performer, song write and vocalist of all times when he left this world! We miss u Freddie!
I remember this, the other bands came out and played a couple of tunes, almost half heartedly. You almost could see Bob Geldof twisting their arms behind their backs. Then Queen came on and treated it like a paying gig, gave their all and left the stage. The rest, as they say, is history......

The best thing about his absolute control over that entire audience is that it wasn’t even his audience necessarily. They didn’t all go there to specifically see queen. But queen is what we all remember. That’s epic.

To be fair, that's one hell of a mustache.
No autotune or pitch correction back in them days, just let that sink in for a minute !
Oh ya, his voice is just amazing times 10!!
What happened to " Crazy little thing called love"?
I,literally, as a 65 year old don't know what that is or what that does even though I have now heard the phrase many times...lol

Curious though was it Live Aid or Woodstock that did more harm than good. I heard that Woodstock destroyed the farmers field. And can you educate me on the harm that Live Aid did. Would like to know. thanks
@@sheelaghgaelic4489 I won't look for the actual thing but as far as i remember the money from the live aid went to ,i think a country from africa or something like that,to help and it went to the president or whatever they had and helped funding killing people in whatever civil war or whatever they had...sry for the half assed answer but you get the idea.
The teacher showed us a lot of queen videoclips in our art history class in highschool
man... well said... you are right!
When you get to the point in your musical career that you don't even have to sing the songs you made famous. And can let the audience sing it for you
THAT is when you have become Legend
This was my wedding day and my reception was one big Live Aid party. Happy times ❤️
Another fun fact about Queen: The guitarist Brian May is also an Astrophysicist with an actual PHD in physics. That's some major top cookie.
All 4 band members have university degrees tbh. Brian got his phd. They are said to be the most intelligent bands lol
Yeah, and Brian actually is involved in astrophysics research projects too. They are all very bright.
Another fun fact, Brian May's guitar was built from scratch by him and his father when he was a teen. He still uses it to this day, and it has been restored a number of times over the years due to all of the touring abuse. There is a ton of super interesting information about this guitar online and like groups of people that build exact replicas and Everything.
Brian May is truly one of the best guitarists ever to play, and he is DEFINITELY the best who’s UNDERRATED!!!! Prince knew this and let him take a solo at an ensemble concert once.
The PHD didn't do any good when it came to making a movie though
It's a wonderful thing that you've educated your son on this performance.
I am a 55 year old life long Queen fan and everytime I see this it brings a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye.
Whenever anyone asks me who do I think are the great public speakers of our time I always say Freddie Mercury. Nobody I have ever seen has been able to communicate with 1000's of people the way he did.
Thank you for bringing this to us.
Freddie had a throat infection and was ordered not to sing at live aid but he did
Mrs. Mercury He actually had nodules on his vocal chords which occurred from time to time. But nothing was going to stop Freddie!
Nice fact, didn't know that, thanks for watching, we had a good time making this video.
@@heyjude1920 ahh ok
@@heyjude1920 well - "don't stop me now".. or ever :)
well, obviously - great minds.. :)
I love that there’s not a cell phone or camera in sight apart from the camera men filming it! Everyone in the moment enjoying themselves!!
Cellphones were kinda nonexistent back then the best we could do was a regular instatphoto camera and a tape recorder
What's wrong with people recording when at a concert?
@@gator_productions Yeah, its a real treat to pay for a ticket to see a band/artist and get stuck behind a wall of a/holes waving their damn cell phones around making their own crappy ,in sound and vision, copy of said artists biggest hit.... maybe there should be a separate section for these "fans".... let them annoy each other and not the real enjoyers of the concert experience as the entertainer intended.....
@@heezahore oh boo hoo, some people like to record at concerts and u don't like it. So we should separate over half of the crowed so people like u can see an extra inch of the performance. 😢
@@gator_productions actually yeah..... if you want to have peoples cell phones blocking your view then absolutely have a section set aside..... like outside on the pavement as its illegal.... read your ticket smart-ass........
Me being 15 and obsessing over Queen. I'm happy to see that even younger people (including me) are being introduced to, dare I say it, the best band of all time as well as watching one of the best performances ever filmed.
But man, we are the Champions. I cry every time.
I do Ayeeeee oh every time as well.
Props to you man. You have been blessed by Freddie's voice.
@@guccigasbag2780 inxs doesn't even come close I'm afraid 😂
Sophings I’m 10 and I love queen!
@@thenerdfather5309 not entirely close but still an amazing band! I've heard them, they're amazing!!
dont, I only found out about Queen thnx to getting into Bowie because of his work with Trent Reznor on the song "Im Afraid of Americans" back when I was in High School in the late 90's, ended up listening to Under Pressure one day, looked up Queens stuff and fell in love on the spot with them, Found out a few years later that he had died of HIV/AIDS complication back in 93, felt I had missed out on witnessing something great and wondrous
No one has ever owned a stage like Freddie did that day! I will never forget it ever!
I don’t know you guys but every time i see this performance it makes me cry always
Always brings a lump to the throat. My wife cant watch the film bohemian rhapsody without breaking into tears at this part
The Shadow of Death tears, lump in the throat, huge grin. This is the second time I've watched this performance tonight because I wanted to see a reaction video. Fucking historic performance. Kid looks like he could give a fuck. 😒
“Crazy little thing called love” was cut out!!!! But I loved the look on ur sons face....my kids have known live aid ‘85 their whole lives!!! This is STILL the #1 live performance of all time!!!!
Late replying on this comment but I was sad it was cut too because I love it myself and it really shows the amazing range of hit songs the band has. Plus I enjoy when non-Queen fans ask if that is an Elvis cover or kicks off the convo about how almost everyone has heard at least one song by them before 'We Will Rock You' kicks in to confirm that!
Week 4 into quarantine, here we are.
Yes Tsavatanem, here we are.
Week 5 And we're still in quarantine.
Gor Zakharian week 8
We are listening to Queen. Could be worse.
@TheSilentGamer YT Who?
Oh Freddie. You can hear how tired his voice is getting during the last minutes but he kept going. A champion indeed❤️
Well his doctor told him not to do the show because his throat was so bad and u can hear in we are the champions he croaks at one point (I will edit with time stamp)
Yeah he was struggling, but wow, how many artists these days could risk, or dare put a performance of a lifetime in, when they aren't 100%, this rightly goes down in folklaw, in history as amazing musicianship.
The expression of his father’s face watching Queen is PRICELESS💜
Grow up
@@samuelstalcup You should
especially after 10:57 where he tries to hold back his emotions and then looks at the son like: do you see that?
Son looks positively bored.
Radio Gaga and 70 thousand people all doing the clap in sync still gives me the chills. Love you Freddie ❤️
I case you didn't know the concert started at noon... queen came on around 6.30 ...after 6 1/2 hours on our feet they re-energised us all!! The best by far 🧐
You were there? I so envy you guys who saw Freddie live. I was 9 days old when this concert was held so needless to say I never got the opportunity 😔
@@LeneKKristoffersen best day ever partied hard from moment got up till early hours following day. 😈
@@MarkLandsberg lucky you 😍
When they say the concert was blasting out from every open window or from gardens in the London area and rest of the UK, THEY REALLY ARE NOT EXAGGERATING. Honest. An amazing day in the UK.
Love that you're showing this to your 17 year old son. I still get chills watching this. I was 17 in 1977 . You should check out some classic QUEEN
Yes, more Queen coming very soon, thanks for the comment and for watching.
Kathy this was in 1985.
I am jealous u had Beatles while growing up
@@varunpandey1484 I find them ok, bit overplayed in the UK though. A bit like Marmite you either love them or not.
The kids looked decidedly underwhelmed. He only commented on the size of the crowd and never mentioned the performance. I think Dad paid him to sit through it
Freddie Mercury played the piano, played the guitar but mostly he played the audience!
Ya, this performance killed, not one second of it wasn't great.
...like a Strad
I don’t think anything compares to his air guitar playing abilities! 😂
@@Kammy-nh8vl Lol
Still simply the most compelling live video ever …..20 mins of pure unadulterated music genius 👍👌💪🇮🇲. Ps don’t forget, they weren’t queen fans….they were there for all the artists that day…..but Queen stole their hearts 👍🇮🇲💖
And even all these years later, Brian May and Roger Taylor are STILL the most amazing musicians of all time. I was in tears being able to hear Brian playing live, any queen fan should get their asses to the Queen concert ASAP while you can still see Roger and Brian!!
OCFam I’m dying cause I can’t afford the tickets. I’m so sad I didn’t get to go. I DID however see Queen and Paul Rogers. It was good but again no replacing Freddie. I also got to see the Brian May band at Hammerjacks in Baltimore Maryland. It was so cool because it was a SMALL venue (which no exists that’s where they built Ravens Stadium) but it was AMAZING we waited in line for three hours so we could be in the third row. NO seats standing room only. We didn’t even go to the bar during the show.
Just saw them Aug 15. OMG best money i have spent. Adam Lambert is just incredible with them. I was so impressed. No he is not Freddie but he honore his memory well.
One of the greatest front men of all time? Correction: THE greatest front man of all time.
I still get goosebumps whenever I watch this moment in time. It was and is truly magnificent and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
One of the best bands of all time! Such an amazing performance! Thanks so much for sharing. ❤️ 👑 ❤️
