- AMPK is said to serve as a “mitochondrial guardian.” Thanks to AMPK, working out may magnify your mitochondria, as well as your muscles.

AMPK is one of the anti-aging pathways I highlight in my longevity book, How Not to Age (nutritionfacts..., available in print, e-book, and audio. (All proceeds I receive from the book are donated directly to charity.)

"Metformin may negatively impact muscle growth and strength gains from resistance training. One study found that healthy volunteers who took metformin while doing resistance training for 14 weeks had smaller gains in muscle mass and quality than those who took a placebo. The study suggests that metformin may inhibit the mTORC1 pathway, which is a key regulator of muscle growth. Higher doses of metformin can also be dangerous, potentially leading to lactic acid poisoning and renal failure."
Metformin is a mitochondrial inhibitor which makes you wonder why they keep prescribing it for people who have diabetes who probably are also inhibiting their mitochondria due to that disease
@@superfinevids they give it to diabetics because metformin lowers blood sugar. Duh
Dr Greger, I felt I really should say thank you by way of donation for the influence your work has had on my ongoing health. You do a great work for human health. All of your videos are very informative and tirelessly referenced. Good on you! 🙏
This is a fascinating series. I really appreciate you posting it up. I am looking forward to the rest of the videos!
Great series of videos. It is regrettable that no information is presented on what type and how much exercise is needed to naturally boost AMPK. The video only mentions biking for 20 minutes in a study
I love this channel!
I look forward to seeing the metformin video. I think in How Not To Diet, it says red peppers, or nightshades in general, can also activate AMPK, so that would be my preferred option.
And salicylates, aspirin- like compounds found in many plant foods, especially spices.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Brilliant, love it, hooray Dr. G!
Great video. BTW, who on earth would agree to get their muscle biopsied while they exercise, unless this was an animal study?
He said 'put people on a bike' so a human study. Plus you can talk a grad student into just about anything.
@@dianeladico1769 Apparently so! The highly coveted PhD...
@@SupplementalDinner-zs4np LOL Your advisor *owns* you.
@@dianeladico1769 Literally has free run of your soft tissues 🤣
@@SupplementalDinner-zs4np 😄
So for now, be sure to get regular exercise to boost AMPK and put your body in a situation where energy demand increases.
Any coming up on life extension and mentality
What about berberine?
I found at least one meta-analyses that concluded berberine was about as effective for diabetes as metformine from.what I recall in an even lower dose, but not sure If the described here would also transfer just as well
Berberine is fat soluble, disolve it in olive oil and if you want turn it into a nano emulsion by adding water and lecithin then blending it. Cool studies on liposomal Berberine against cancer if you search on google.
@@SilkRoad-ew9kx There's one on the NIH site. I've had trouble posting external links so this is the best I have. Here's the title: Efficacy of Berberine in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes
One of the best anti-aging supplements in my opinion.
@@SilkRoad-ew9kx ok, I just went through pubmed, but I can't seem to find it now honestly, really weird
Pays off!
I've been taking metformin for the last 90 years and was going to continue for another 90 years. Do I have to stop?
Thank you!
thank you so much
What about Rapamyacin?
I just read that there are 1000 to 2500 mitochondria in a cell taking up to 25% of cell volume! Wow!
The fact that Metformin blunts muscle growth is a problem for me, simply because I prefer the protein-muscle-metabolism longevity pathway to the calorie-restriction (Disposable Soma theory of aging) longevity pathway.
This is unfortunate because Metformin has so many benefits.
Berberine does many of the same things as Metformin
@@peacefulruler1 it may also blunt muscle growth too
First comment for my hero’s channel! Well that’s a little over the top
is it though?
Following his advice drastically improved my health and will likely lengthen my life with good years so yeah, he's my hero. Not over the top at all.
Longevity.
Хорошее видео интересная информация.
Одно но, метформин для меня отрава.
As this man says rats are not humans (although some humans may be rats!) so perhaps their mitochondria are different from ours?
They are mammals so not likely
