The main use of the Line was supplying Coal to the Tennyson Power House. Once it was demolished and replaced by the Tennis Centre, the need for a relocated Tennyson Railway Station with at least Playing Season Services to alleviate Parking Problems.
Once Cross River Rail opens, there won't be many services through Southbank. Maybe extend Doomben Services from Roma Street to Corinda via South Bank, and then the Tennyson line
Brisbane's other forgotten passenger train line is the Belmont Line. It was a railway line that ran from South Brisbane (sharing the Cleveland line tracks to a junction at Norman Park) through what would later become the carpark of Carindale Westfield, and onto Belmont. It was formally referred to as the Belmont Steam Tramway because (at the time) the state government had a monopoly on naming things "railways", and the Belmont line was built and maintained by the Belmont Shire Council. However, for most of it's history, QR were contracted to provide service to the line, with QR crews running QR trains over the "privately" owned branch. The arrangement was not so dissimilar to how the airport line is run today. It was planned and built quickly in 1909 just as QR was encountering capacity constraints on the Cleveland line. The hope was that QR would recognise that the Belmont line had the makings of a shorter, faster route to Cleveland and decide to upgrade this new line rather duplicate the existing single track line out through Wynnum. This did not ultimately happen. After 15 years of service, ownership of the line passed to the newly formed Brisbane City Council. The council was already all in on electric trams and diesel buses, and weren't interested in owning not-a-train lines that relied on the state government for service. So they closed it down. However, they kept almost all the land (except for perhaps a dozen house blocks in Camp Hill), and you can still clearly see where it ran on modern aerial photos. You can even walk pretty much the entire route of you are up to it.
Not in Brisbane, ran like Barcaldine-Aramac tramway, run by Aramac council until 1975. Was a Red Fred rail motor and ran on a shoestring. Old trains were provided by QR at the end of their lives.
On weekends if it is track work from South Brisbane to Yeerongpilly it occasionally saves the Beenleigh/Gold Coast & Ferny Grove/Airport trains patrons from buses as they cross through on to the Ipswich/Springfield line. If you don't require stations on the Beenleigh line north of Yeerongpilly you get a scenic trip to the CBD via another line.
Tennyson was a farming area prior to the Power House. I also grew up in a loving community. Having fun on the golf course and riding push bikes around. My dad had a word. . So to speak about the soot. It stopped. Theiss also had an idea! Changed the boundary from residential to Future Industry. I will Always have Very fond memories of Tennyson 🌺
what! Why isn't this still operating with more stations on the Tennyson line? What a huge waste of a resource when Public transport is needed now more than ever.
According to train boffins who looked at its issues, it was a curved platform that could only accommodate 3 cars (instead of the usual 6), there were slot capacity issues (especially with the merivale bridge) that meant it couldn't be utilised much anyway after the timetable rewrite in 2011, and the bus route setup to service that area in the train station's stead was poorly utilised which indicates there's not enough growing demand for train services since 2011. Even the train boffins who wanted the line to be used more didn't really think it was worth reopening Tennyson station, just the line.
I hate how few train lines Brisbane has. Trains are in every way superior to buses. I tell my kids, that when they eventually move out, look for somewhere to live near a train line.
why cant train stop at sherwood if people want to go home to ipswich instead of going to roma st station then had rto come down again?? very poor planning!
Another who has no idea what Cross River Rail is About. It’s to fix the bottleneck which the inner core of the network has. by adding another way into the city it will effectively create the ability to double the number of services through the inner city thus doubling the volume of trains over the whole network The Tennyson line could not do that
Probably not worth it, as there is close access from Yeerongpilly station, including a pedestrian overpass above Fairfield Rd. A dedicated Tennis Centre station probably wouldn’t be worth the money involved.

I grew up in Tennyson. We had shops on the other side of the tracks. We also had a primary school on the other side of the tracks.p
Very fond memories of Tennyson

I know right!

I used it once to get to South Bank via the Ipswich line once. It always fascinated me.

why didn't they just route some trains via this line. Cheaper than Cross River Rail

@@stuartskerman1540 at least it has stub tunnels north of Roma street to link up to the NWTC one day
@@stuartskerman1540 no, Brisbane needs a rail loop like melbourne
That's Government policy for you
At least I guess if needed the line is there shouldn’t prove hard to add a station
why was it closed
because the number of people living along and using Tennyson Station doesn’t warrant a station
Pretty wasteful isnt 😢😮
Would it not be worth opening at least for the brisbane international tennis?
