Sick man loving it , I built a 416 this winter with stage 2 hotcam , open air box , full hmf pipe 180 main jet and 48 pilot and it absolutely screams , world of a difference from stock
Liking this series bro. Usually RUclips is just videos of people showing how fast thier quad is. It's cool to see the whole process and what gains happen!
Keep doing quad wars please haven’t seen nothing exactly like your channel!!! Really interesting 🧐!!!!!! When you said you was on top of the gas tank you have to fight it to get back on top of the gas tank ASAP to keep it down I got a 2020 raptor 700r and she’s feisty 😈!!!!! Y’all could use a race light
I've install the big gun eco system and a hotcam stage 1 in mine. With proper jetting the power gain is just insane. Now, my 400 reach 130dbl and I won a few races on a raptor 660r. Just incredible how 650$ woke this thing up!
I've got a similar setup. 416 with stage 2 hotcam but a 10.5:1 wiseco. I didnt want to run race gas when trail riding. I have a lowering link on the rear I believe its the xc version. Helps keep the tires on the ground and better hook up. Try it out easier than changing out the swing arm.
Awesome series guys. Definitely giving me tips on how to wake my 400ex up. I have the 416 kit just need that hot cam. And get jetting tips too! By the way just purchased +2 full flight arms because of you! Thanks for putting together such a great channel.
Having correct jetting can be a +or - 3 HP. I have a CR 2 stroke and I fouled 1 plug since August 2016. I change it when I rebuild it buy it doesn't foul plugs.
Running a 03 416cc JE 11:1, kibble white valves, stage 2 hot cam, full HMF exhaust, K&N with pre filter and outwears airbox cover no lid. Yfz front calibers +2 lone star arms with tusk extended axle and Elka stage 3 suspension. Jetting: 168m 42p needle 3rd clip 2 turns out. Gearing 15t front 36t rear.
We have 2 bug eyed 400ex's. One is stock while the other has the 416 kit and full exhaust. We're going with the 450r carb next which people say really helps. Love what y'all are doing. I'm subscribed.

And how about longevity ? As this gets more Modded Out, How much will they take before Something Else takes a $hit? I Liked how you upgraded the Clutch as well! Looking Forward to the next Video!
Thank you man! I would say it's going to be reliable as a 416 with 11:1 compression. I know larger bores and more radical cams can make the reliability suffer but how it is should last. We drove the trails a bit and it was great power delivery 🤘
i have had a 400ex since 99 when they came out, has a 440 kit, cam, 12.5 piston, fcr 39 carb. the 400ex needs a 1.5: swing arm to keep that front end down.
Awesome stuff as always. One thing I can suggest for speed gain before changing sprockets and chain is to try some slightly bigger diameter rear tires. The standard size MX tires normally found on sport quads are usually for acceleration. So maybe trying some bigger rears on it would give it some extra travel speed?
That would definitely add top speed but it would also add rotational weight which kills HP 😕 We had 20" GNCC tires on both machines to keep that equal 🤘
@@MichaelSabo Hmmm, true. But sometimes the power of some machines need a little taming. Once I've got my YZ project started and off the ground I'm gonna stick the fattest tire on the rear I can get for an 18" rim. Those old 465's may not be the fastest or most powerful machines by todays standards. But they're torque monsters and the chunkiest rear knobs are gonna help with the spinning. :)
Awesome video guys!!! Put mine back together a couple months ago after being apart for years. It has a 440 with oversized valves 450 carb and a stage 3 hotcam and I put a trans cooler with spal fan!!! Keep doing you cause the videos rock!!!
I had a brand new 99 EX when it first came out and thought it was so controllable. 5 sec after the 440 kit and stage 2 cam I thought DAMN this thing is nuts. It was like a different quad! I beat every other quad in 200 yd race Banshees and all. Banshee had higher top speed but the take off was so fast that the only one that beat me was a 250r 3 wheeler. Added all those mods at the sane time. It's like buying a new bike because you have to learn to ride it all over again plus a cdi box
Just subbed to Stupid Fast. I just rebuilt a 1989 Yamaha YMF350ERW on my channel and would like to do a 400ex next. You guys are 'homework'. Keep it coming.
416 12.5-1 je piston port and polish head kibble white valve springs stage 2 hotcam white Brothers e2 exhaust open air box and if u really wanna build it to max get a 450r carb its the perfect setup
Built 430cc ex here.....been 397,403,416,426,430,440. Currently je 430 11.5:1 (soon to be 13.5:1) one of the only 400exs online with a big ass FCR40 carb. 1-5gear just stands up.
My last 400EX had a 426 kit, white brother pipe, TRX450R carb, and a stage 2 hot cam. It was definitely a monster, and I placed very well in some hare scrambles. Look up GDH Racing out of Dover TN, they sell used Honda parts and you can get a 450R carb fairly cheap compared to new. I’d like to see you do that mod so I can see how that stacks up against a stock 400 because I never had a stock 400 around to compare it with.... but I’m telling you, it was CRAZY FAST for a 400EX. Honestly, the 426 is kinda the sweet spot for a big bore kit for the 400EX if you do trail riding or woods racing. I don’t see the need for a 440 kit unless you’re in the dunes or on an MX track.
Sounds like it was a beast bro! We do have a 37mm FCR which in theory should have the correct amount of velocity for the 416 but because of time constraints we didnt have time to make a custom boot for it etc. I will probably be using it on the 435 I'm building soon though 🤘
@@MichaelSabo that’s awesome. I used the FCR off the ‘04-‘05 450R. It was a direct bolt on for the most part which was pretty cool. Also, if you use that “equalizer vest” again in your videos, why don’t you strap it to the front bumper? It would put extra weight in the front and still add the weight to the rider/machine total weight. I know it’s not much, but anything to keep the front end down. That was the issue I had until I went to an aftermarket suspension setup. Having a little “squat” in the suspension from running it softer helped absorb some weight transfer and kept the front end from coming up so easily. Just things you might be able to try to help with the wheelie issue. I always found myself feathering the clutch to keep the front end lower to the ground.
I have some pictures on my Facebook of my old 400EX. I think the most recent picture has lone star sport A-Arms and stock shocks, but it eventually had JD Performance arms and GT Thunder Shocks. GDH Racing in Dover does sell aftermarket suspension stuff used as well, so sometimes you can get some sweet prices that are sometimes cheaper than new OEM on some upgrades
I've ridden both stock 400ex and a 416 with stage 2 hot cam. Big difference and still reliable. Rode a 440ex wicked top end just seemed to lack bottom end.
after watching this, i regret getting rid of my 440ex, thing was loud and punchy and tons of pull! you guys inspire me to look out for another one. have fun guys. cheers from Alaska
Wow saw this when it came out just watched again, man you guys put so much into tour vids. Side of the trail mechanics so we could see results. who does that. Hella good editing putting all 4 mods on same clip running em same time. Epic, thanks.
Never worry about top speed ! Remove the choke butterfly and the shaft plug the hole remove crank vent from the intake boot again. Plug the hole in the boot let the vent hose hang try a 185 main jet with air box top off ! Oh its how fast you get there
And the cam I had the exact same setup but 450r shocks and a arms and I +1 swingarm and +2 axle I use to run the kenda knarlys in the rear the 20 inch after my suspension upgrade it helped put the power down alot better for me anyway..good stuff guys cant wait for the nxt part of the series
@@MichaelSabo thanks man and yes it's the best thing goin man keep it up u actually made me want another quad but prices are over the roof rite now ridiculous prices on even old beat up banshees and 400.s I'm in Tennessee may be the times are changing use to for 1500 bucks I could find a super clean 400ex and for 2500 to 3000 a clean banshee but the market is.crazy what do you think about the market on used bikes I guess were everyone stoped making sport quads idk mabey new.life will come into the market
I had an 03 400ex. That I did a 465 big bore/stroker kit. 12:1 comp. Did extensive amount of head porting, kibble white valves, had a Hot cams stage 3 cam. FmF exhaust, Edelbrock carburetor, and white brothers rev box cdi, Hinson race clutch kit, I ran a Clarke 5.5 gal Desert tank. Lonestar rear hub bearing, durablue axle, lonestar rear swing arm, and long travel front arms, fox racing shocks, lonestar extended steering shaft, with CR250 rental bars, full MSR skid plates, ran holeshot XCT tires, Ran stock gearing. It was a beast and would stomp newer 450 quads and raptor 660 and 700's couldn't catch it. I built it based on being a competitive quad for gncc. I can vp C12 race gas in it.
I have a 2005 trx 400 all stock except for the pro taper bars and front bumper..hauls ass just the way it is..also very clean and well taken care of for a 05..
Banshees and 250rs n stuff are space x high in price but these 400’ and raptors are so popular u can get good prices.. Atleast where I live in Michigan
Hey mike you gotta do them all against the Ltr450!!! I have a kfx and a ltr 450 and it’s a crazy close match and thinkin it would be close with the 416!!!
that reminds me when i installed my 240cc big bore kit on my blaster when i was a kid, the front wheels would never touch the ground, they went up in 6th gear on top of a hill once and scared the living shit out of me lmao
Awesome. Would be interesting to see stock 400 vs raptor, and then how many mods it takes to beat the raptor, and then how much the raptor responds to mods to beat the 400. A little game of rubber banding with machines. Where are u guys located?
This gets me stoked to put my big bore kit and cam in. You guys should do a stock VS modded 450 next and then compare to JBL both John and yours banshees.
Like always another bad ass video I’m telling you if you can figure out a way to keep that front end down, I think you could be in the 50s on the top speed maybe even close to 60 especially when you go to an even bigger cylinder that was in your video, maybe you could fabricate you are Willie bar to help with that or something.
I had to add 2 teeth to my 400s front sprocket after the rebuild all I did was go back with a flat top Piston and jett it out it's geared to low but now it's perfect plus I gained around 16 mph runs around 87 now
Hey Michael! Hope you see this comment, I have a 2001 400ex I just got running, I jetted the carb and added an aftermarket exhaust. It's running perfect, but I'd like to add a stage 2 hot cam but I don't want to mess with the valve springs, or rockers because I don't know how to do that 😅 edit: my engine is stock 400cc's as well and I only plan to bore it up once the engine needs a rebuild, I'd really appreciate your input !
As far as gearing goes when changing sprocket sizes. One tooth in the front is equal to 3 in the back. So basically, only going one tooth smaller with the back sprocket is not going to change anything.
You know how air restriction in the intake of an engine helps with torque because of increased air velocity? What if we had an intake that would be restrictive and cone shaped at low end RPM’s for torque but opens up to a more cylindrical shape as the engine revs up.
Them 400ex is a beast but if you sneak some cash Into one too make it a xc style gncc pro quad with a 440 or 500 big bore in it and everything you can think of too do it then their alot of fun
Do you think it would be worth it to put a HC2 in my mostly stock 450 without having a big bore kit or any other engine mods first? Im not very familiar with that stuff but my friends trx450 has just a HC2 and dasa exhaust and it has noticeably more power compared to my trx450 with just a sparks exhaust. I just want a little more power....but im not in a position at the moment to do a big bore kit or get any porting done.... So would I be ok putting a HC2 in my 450 before having any other motor work done......just to gain a lil more power? And then do the other motor mods later on?
The cam is going to make a difference for sure, especially paired with exhaust and intake. If you can get a high compression piston and advance your timing a little bit, that will turn it into a beast; it doesn't have to be big bore. Hope this helps 🤘
In retrospect that would have been a better idea but we didn't come up with the idea of "stock vs mods" until after I had already started modding the yellow one.
I'd start high at maybe a 180 main which will probably be rich, and then walk it down until it's in the sweet spot. We have a 175 main and 42 pilot in the 400 now but I don't know what the elevation is.

Another cool video mike! Like the on the spot upgrades an instant results good idea bro
I appreciate that Chad; thank you for watching as always 🤘
That big bore turned it on
Oh hell yea bro!
Oh its how fast you get there
What a tees on the 450 race but the content is awesome love the in Field cam swap
Thank you bro! Won't be long, episode 3 drops Monday 🤘
I had a 400 with the big bore an a white brothers full exhaust an jets an oh man it was a badass bike after. Killer vid man.
It really is amazing what a few light mods can do to the performance!
That's what's up Ronnie! 🤘 Thank you bro!
I can imagine that setup helped a ton with putting the power down; glad you like the series man!
@@MichaelSabo and when is the next part.in the series commin out?? I cant wait to see the 450 and 400
I had an 03 400ex.
This is the best thing ever so excited for this series
Just got a 400ex and can't wait to build it, probably gonna do a 416 kit, fcr carb, hot cam, and cooling mods
I’ve always been a fan of the Honda EX series.. hell you can find these dirt cheap
Not these days lol. Before the pandemic you could find them for good prices but now people are charging crazy prices for everything.
The market has definitely inflated recently
Banshees and 250rs n stuff are space x high in price but these 400’ and raptors are so popular u can get good prices.. Atleast where I live in Michigan
I'm curious if the stage 1 hotcam would have worked better with with 416 and kept more midrange and low end
More than likely not; the stage 1 specs are very mild; the stage 2 maintains the torque from what we observed
Loving this series looking forward to the next episode!
NAAAAAAAAATE!
The fci, fuel controller and 15t front sprocket will be like night and day difference on the kfx.
100%
My friend has a 07 400ex stage 2 hot cam and a full
Yoshi and it pulls up in every gear without a problem
Bada**
I’m running a 440 kit, stage 2 hotcam, 12.5/1 compression and it absolutely rips. I love it
What jets are you running? Race gas or pump gas?
@Michael Sabo do you guys have a video or step by step install of the big bore kit and cam going on a LTZ400!? Probably a long shot, just curious.
What kind of gas do you use when your 400ex has 416 big bore and stage 2 hot cams
Man! This is addictive, I started watching before going to bed and finished it !
Hey mike you gotta do them all against the Ltr450!!! I have a kfx and a ltr 450 and it’s a crazy close match and thinkin it would be close with the 416!!!
If we get our hands on an LTR we will definitely do a shootout 🤘
Awesome comparison! Thank you for showing us the difference. This is awesome for the guys that own a trx 400ex
400ex has been always my favorite quad of all time
that reminds me when i installed my 240cc big bore kit on my blaster when i was a kid, the front wheels would never touch the ground, they went up in 6th gear on top of a hill once and scared the living shit out of me lmao
LMAO! I'm guessing that had a stock swinger? Sounds like a crazy fun quad 🤘
@@MichaelSabo yeah that was the only thing still stock on the whole quad lmao bad choice of what leaving stock haha
I'm in love with these videos bro can't wait to get out on mine this summer
I'm glad you're enjoying them bro!
Awesome. Would be interesting to see stock 400 vs raptor, and then how many mods it takes to beat the raptor, and then how much the raptor responds to mods to beat the 400. A little game of rubber banding with machines.
Where are u guys located?
Eastern pa
It would definitely be fun to try this and experiment; great ideas 🤘
@@StupidFastJohn dang, that's a bit of a haul for me...
This was bad-ass you guys should do the next series with the Z 400?
I think we will have to incorporate a Z or KFX at some point because a lot of people are asking for this!
I got a kfx almost done rebuilding it
I'm building a z400 and was going to big bore it but was told it will blow the trans
The production quality is on point
I appreciate that, thank you 🤘
Sprocket up 1 in the front, maybe 1 or 2 down in the rear before you spend the cash on a swingarm
For sure; I wish we had one on hand to try for the video. Good idea 🤘
This gets me stoked to put my big bore kit and cam in. You guys should do a stock VS modded 450 next and then compare to JBL both John and yours banshees.
That would be a great comparison!
Holy shit that thing is a wheelie machine!!
So much fun man!
Not goin to lie, i Jumped when you joked with that piston clip. lolol.
Like always another bad ass video I’m telling you if you can figure out a way to keep that front end down, I think you could be in the 50s on the top speed maybe even close to 60 especially when you go to an even bigger cylinder that was in your video, maybe you could fabricate you are Willie bar to help with that or something.
Thank you for the love man! I think with gearing and keeping the front end down you might be right!
I had to add 2 teeth to my 400s front sprocket after the rebuild all I did was go back with a flat top Piston and jett it out it's geared to low but now it's perfect plus I gained around 16 mph runs around 87 now
You should go down a tooth in the back it will help a ton it will give you a higher top speed and less torque at the bottom
Good call man!
Now race against my newly installed 87 410 Puma 250r. 🤣
Correct but it does make a difference for sure man 🤘
niiiice might have to throw a smaller rear sprocket it on there to keep the front end done a little bit lol
It helps a lot man!
@@MichaelSabo makes me wish i modded my 400 before i sold it lol
You know how air restriction in the intake of an engine helps with torque because of increased air velocity? What if we had an intake that would be restrictive and cone shaped at low end RPM’s for torque but opens up to a more cylindrical shape as the engine revs up.
interesting concept Dj or just have a retractable airbox lid like a shutter and have it controlled by motor and ignition curve
@@StupidFastJohn intake valve, just like an exhaust valve.
This is an interesting concept for sure
I have a 07 400ex with a full sparks exhaust a 426 big bore and a stage 2 hot cam. What jets do you think I should put in
Bring on the 450 can’t wait
I'm looking forward to that too.
I would love to see a 2 stroke series... Please..
its in the works brother! i PROMISE you will love it too!
Definitely my favorite episode yet👍👍
Glad you liked it man, thank you for watching 🤘
@@MichaelSabo got me wishing I would of kept my 400ex
@@sethosborne576 can always get another one bro!
Great video. Looking forward to the next one.
richolyolson thank you for watching! 🤘
Really enjoyed the edit/test format.... thanks for the great videos!
Did you keep the main jet the same when adding the stage two hotcam?
Hey mike i know you look at comments sometimes. Why didnt you just keep the yellow one completely stock being that it is already completely stock?
In retrospect that would have been a better idea but we didn't come up with the idea of "stock vs mods" until after I had already started modding the yellow one.
I think you made a good choice with the stage 2 cams I would have went for those as well
Definitely a well rounded cam 🤘
What jetting would you recommend for a 416EX stage 3 cam, white bros slip on and 4800 feet
I'd start high at maybe a 180 main which will probably be rich, and then walk it down until it's in the sweet spot. We have a 175 main and 42 pilot in the 400 now but I don't know what the elevation is.
Thanks
does adding a bigger cam (stage 2 for example) and a bigger bore (440cc) make the bike unreliable?
The 416 and stage 2 wasnt unreliable for us at all! I have asked alot of people about the 440s and havent heard anything bad yet.
Still no Fci on the kfx, that thing is starving dude!
FCI, porting, full exhaust and power commander are already in the works 😎
You can definitely hear the "Hotcam tick" after you installed the cam
heck yea you can man, lol
Is that a bad thing?
@@tyler238 no its completely normal as long as your valve clearance is good
I’ve had a Curtis sparks 416. A home built 426 and a shop built 440. I would take my 416 any day. Ran stronger all the way around.
Do you know where I can find the 16t second gear in the trans for a 01 400ex haven’t been able to find one, please and thanks
I'd say rocky mountain but looks like they're out of stock. I'd keep a look out on eBay
long live sport quads!
