    Some hobbyists restore cars, some restore airplanes. But for the past 30 years, Fred Bieser has been obsessed with restoring the gun turrets that were mounted onto World War II bombers. We visit his workshop in Georgia to learn about how he converts crumpled balls of rusted metal into beautiful working mechanical turrets that you can actually operate.

    As a Marine Pvt. in 1957, I was sent to Aviation Fundamentals School in Jacksonville Fl. I was being prepared for a job in Aviation. I had a 15 minute Epiphany with an upper turret. I was allowed to get in, kick the pedals and move the joysticks in the turret. I fell in love immediately and since I had not selected what discipline I would train for told the instructor, "I want to be a Turret Gunner". I was informed neither the Navy nor the Marine Corps had any turret equipped planes. :-( I eventually opted for Radial Engines and worked on many models of them from R985 to R3350. I appreciate this post and the restoration effort!

    My father was a tool and die maker for Glenn L. Martin in Baltimore '40-43. He designed and built the "jigs" for the assembly of the tail gunner position door for the B-26.. Not a turret, but thought of him when Glen L. Martin Baltimore was mentioned.

    • @butlerdawgs78
      @butlerdawgs78 3 года назад

      Very cool. My grandfather was a tail gunner in the B26, flew with the 5th Army Air Corps out of New Guinea. He always had a newspaper clipping that he was the shortest man enlisted during WWII at 5 feet tall. He tried all the branches but they all wouldn't take him because of his height until the Army Air Corp said yes. The pilots would let the men take turns flying the aircraft on the way back to base, and when it was his turn the copilot had to control the rudder because he couldn't reach the rudder pedals.

    Assuming the name on the turret is M.J.Mcleod, there is a photo and an article in the January 22, 1989 San Bernardino County Sun newsaper (newspapers.com) of a Merton J Mcleod who was a tail gunner on a B-24 in Europe during WWII. And if this is the same Merton J Mcleod, it appears he died on January 18, 2001. www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=118748283

    From my mother's sleep I fell into the State,
    And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze.
    Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life,
    I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters.
    When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.

    Very unique restoration project choice. Back in 1981 my first house was on Westfield Street in Rochester NY. This street was the most westerly one in Rochester at the city limits. My back yard backed up to an industrial yard called surplus world. I used to climb the fence and look around on weekends. I saw at least 3 complete turrets in this yard, most likely GE manufactured in Rochester. I never knew this fact about GE until I watched this video. There were many other WWII aircraft parts in this yard. I found Pratt & Whitney engine parts new in boxes and also B-17 Props in the crates. I also found a trailer full of F-100 Super Saber Canopies. Fred if you read this some of those turret assemblies may still be around. I remember many of the components appeared to be stainless steel.

"simple shooting parts" have you ever taken apart a 30cal machine gun or an M1 Garand? i would say the concept is a simple one but the design is complex, with all its moving parts. It was a fighter big enough to be fitted with 2 engines to habour equiment for an effective night raid.
      Same goes for the Beaufighters, the Ju 88 and the Me 110. They all had a specific role in which they were not considered normal fighters nor bombers.

    I once had a friend who was a ball turret gunner in WWII . He told me that they were a secret weapon and that the Germans didn't know that there was a gun down there. The German fighters would often try to sneak up from below and behind, only to get the last surprise of their lives when they came face to face with two fully loaded machine guns.

    • @DaveMoustache
      @DaveMoustache 9 лет назад +3

      Emmit Stewart Sounds like a fairytale to be honest. Rear gunners were a common design feature for bombers since WW1. German WW1 bombers had a machine gunner in the rear, as did allied planes. Planes such as the He-111 even had a downward facing gunner, and that plane was developed in the early 30s. I don't think German fighter pilots would be oblivious to the fact that the allies had similar technology.

      @emmitstewart1921 8 лет назад +2

      +ErgoCogita I don't know about him being tricked. At the time he volunteered, nobody realized what a physically demanding job it was going to be. He was chosen because he was the shortest man in his company, so he was one of the few that could fit into a turret.. He told me that it was long hours cramped up in a tiny little space and bitterly cold. There was no way he could move around and get warm. Not to mention the constant danger from enemy fire. But the thing was, of all the things he later did in his life, including learning to pilot a plane, that was the thing he was proudest.

    • @sultros
      @sultros 8 лет назад

      +Emmit Stewart also, if the plane had to belly in and the turret was damaged he couldn't get out and was dead. It happened a lot.

    Jay, the purpose of the turrets was guns to start with, so everyone needs to give it a rest. Relics from times past, an excellent interview. I restore motorcycles for people who won't ride one in traffic, and work on planes for people who are nervous flying. I was trained to use machine guns in the Navy, both the M-60 and the .50 M-2 as part of early anti terrorism training. Yes, they can cook off due to overheating, but there are ways to properly use them to avoid that, we are taught that. I'm sure he's asked or inspected by ATF to see what's cooking in his shop, so he could have been a little nervous, hence his statement.

      People can like the mechanics of things without necessarily wanting to use them. Like some people collect airsoft guns or deactivated guns because they enjoy the aesthetics or the mechanics of them, but still don't want an actual live gun around the house. And there's more to the whole turret assembly than just the guns. I don't think he's actually freaked out by the concept of a gun, he just doesn't want one that is actually capable of firing around him.

    • @OldSlabSides
      @OldSlabSides 9 лет назад +8

      I feel safe around guns mainly because it is a family member or myself that owns or takes care of the weapon, so your saying that even if say your brother, father owns a gun you would be always terrified of it and never want to touch, shoot, clean, take car of the gun? I am truly sorry you cant fully enjoy the fun target shooting side of guns. But also i am a American so i guess us 'Muricans are all gun crazy right?

    • @OldSlabSides
      @OldSlabSides 9 лет назад +1

      And if all he is interested in is the mechanics and engineering of the turrets why doesn't he work on robotics that are precise they do all the same things but they do not involve guns! may be then he would be happy.

    • @carbon1255

      ***** I like to read about ww2 and play games involving it. I'm sure he is fine watching action films. I wouldn't want to go to war though. It is the same kind of thing.
      Perhaps you have been in a senario where someone is handling a firearm unsafely? Surely that comfort with guns instantly flips to fear/discomfort. Suddenly you have to pay really close attention the the gun and operator and it is very stressful. This guy just feels that all the time when guns are nearby.
      So he likes the idea of guns, but is uncomfortable personally interacting with them. Similar to the way I, or many other foreign visitors to the US may be very wary/uncomfortable with US police, because not only are we unfamiliar with US law, they carry around deadly weapons, and are much more aggressive in strategies.

Let's be honest here. The turrets were designed to shoot down axis airplanes using Browning M2 heavy caliber machine guns. It is what it is.

      Corus Daar The simple fact that he restores Gun Turrets that were built with a singular purpose,,,to shoot down other planes...which invariably have guns attached to them by design. So yeah...it strikes people ass odd that a man "creeped out by guns would put so much energy into a machine designed to kill.

    • @Estamir
      @Estamir 10 лет назад

      ArmyStinger150 Shooting down other planes was often a decent enough way to end a conflict while at the same time not focusing on simply killing or capturing the person piloting it. It's a personal opinion of mine, but air combat in WWI and WWII displayed as much chivalry as there could've been during such times. But more importantly, turrets and the like are still technologies that can easily be fascinating because it was still a creative invention that clearly earned merit for its usefulness-- enough for this guy to be fascinated by them anyway.

  • @d33b33
    @d33b33 10 лет назад +1

    I'm fascinated by the "analog computer" that assists the turret gunner. The gunner enters his bomber's altitude and airspeed, and the bullet velocity is a given. But without the distance, direction and velocity of the enemy plane, you don't have enough data to calculate the required offset to hit that plane.
