The Godfather Longplay (Amiga) [QHD]

- Developed by Creative Materials and published by US Gold in 1991
A game based on Francis Ford Copolla's Mafia-inspired trilogy of films could - and should - have made for an enthralling game. Instead, Creative Materials cobbled together something featuring basic side-scrolling shooting sections, book-ended by some first-person elements.
While the gameplay might be poor, the graphics are nothing short of breathtaking, no doubt accounting for most of the content on the game's 6 floppy disks. The Amiga had many great-looking titles, but this has to be in the top 3 - simply stunning!
For those wondering what the two bars at the top of the screen represent, the left bar represents your current honour/standing within the Corleone family, whilst the right represents your health. Let either bar run out and it's game over.
Family respect is earned by gunning down enemy mobsters and collecting the purple collectibles they drop, while health can be restored by grabbing first aid kits dropped by some enemies. Killing innocent bystanders or police officers will result in a stinging rebuke, so be mindful not to be too trigger happy when they're around.
It's possible to use the score-board interlude to boost health or family rep at the cost of one another, although topping up your health points should always be the priority.

Stunningly beautiful game with gameplay in inverse proportion.
I've never seen a pixel artist do so much with so little. It's astounding how much detail and animation is is this.
That opening is fucking insane considering this was 1991
truth
i used to restart the game just to listen to that song XD
Bulllet speed is like in The matrix movie.
kutchemes ставь скорость 1,50
So beautiful pixel art graphics. I did not know it was possible in an amiga action game.
Nah it was possible.
All the graphics were made by *one single* guy! For a 1991 game, this is a brutal achievement.
Played it on the Amiga back in 91', amazing how different the gameplay felt back then as to seeing how it is now. I didn't remember it being as slow as this.
It runs faster than this on my DOS 386 PC...
There's something about the snail's pace that make it feel like a utterly alien world
Police officers: "Not ANOTHER gang fight... I'm too old to deal with this right now."
The police are rather lenient in this neighborhood... Thanks for showing all the endings! This game sure looked good in magazines back then. That was probably the idea.
Play at x2 speed... Thank me later
It makes it look like the game is moving at the speed it was intended to, and the original speed looks like a malfunction.
Thanks
TY
Not sure which is funnier. That they put a lamppost in front of where guys are shooting at the player or that people are getting shot and the cop just whistles along his way.
If the gameplay matched the graphic quality this would have been amazing. Pete Lyon.
Wow! Never knew this game existed on Amiga
And I wish I hadn't known!
I hope I will forget soon about its existence is a piece of shit
I can't believe they went through the trouble of animating snow sliding down the roof, hitting the awning, and then the ground. While having such an unplayable game.
EDIT: some of the shooters are also lefties, other are righties. Absolutely insane what they spent time on.
I remember this was supposed to be ported to the master system but it got cancelled at the last, cool video man.
Would suck living on that Street, on the plus side the trains are regular.
How he casually WALKS away from the bullets that slowly moving towards him
This game doesn't seem real. Not just because of the graphics, but this game seems like something that would be in a dream.
It was a kinda vibe in the early 90s to be honest.
Thanks!
Bastante maneiro o ambiente é a ideia do jogo
Just because of the graphics, it deserves a remake using mostly the same pixel art with some adjustments and a proper gameplay. It would work better as something in the vein of Flashback or just as a side scrolling beat-em-up.
FY
The backgrounds from this game + Genesis Dick Tracy gameplay would be amazing
Laughing so hard at the ship called "Cockaigne"
PRETTY AMAZING
"U.S. GOLD PRESENTS"...Uh oh.
U. S. Pyrite more like!
I like how there are shootouts and people walk by like nothing is happening🤣
Especially cops. And women pushing baby carriages
the physics of the bullets in this game are on point, that's the kinda shit you get in games made in the rotten usa, Japanese developers have shit on this!
Looks great, plays terrible. It deserves the “Sword of Sodan” prize.
And this game contains the “no need for music, just birds” atmosphere
That's what happens when games are programmed by people who don't understand what fun is.
Great work ! Big like for ya 👍👍
I remember the raving reviews of this in the computer magazines, the graphics were ahead of their time. Gameplay was a bit tricky though.
Had a flash back today of this game. Saw godfather logo and for some reason now 29 years later triggered 11 year old rage quitting memories this game was frustrating.
i opened a second tab and played Tarantella Napoletana while watching this -> perfect game
Uau que gráficos!
38:30 Cop killer! He was dirty anyway.
42:26 Wow that's cold man.
The horrors of The slow flying pixel
Jesus what a monotonous game......Bang uuuhhhh, Bang uuuhhhh,, Bang Bang uuuhhhh, Bang uuuhhhh, Bang Bang Bang uuuhhhh, Bang uuuhhhh!
Yup, there were a lot of monotonous games on the Amiga. It had tonnes of turds (the Amiga CD 32 was even worse). I only like a handful of games on the system.
Back in the day my two cousins got an Amiga for Christmas and I got a Mega Drive... always preferred my MD, there were just more games on the MD I wanted to play.
Avgn got to do a review on this 😂
32:23 I wonder if the background looping animation of two people in car were supposed to be shooting at you or what.
I like that you can shoot two guys out of a window with a cop walking by and you don't get arrested or attacked by the cop.
I figure the cops are on the Mafia pay-roll 😉
THOF THOF THOF THOF
OH
"Amiga Action" magazine reviewed this game and rated it 95%. I bought the game on that recommendation. It was absolute garbage, as demonstrated in the above video. Full praise to the artist for the beautiful graphics. Shame on Amiga Action for selling out.
I recall it well. Had like a 6 or even 8 page spread!
Good old game
Leave the gun, take the cannoli.
A BD animated like this , have a long success !!! like red ketchup , tintin , astérix , blade runner , etc ...
I want this game on the arcade1up
They coukdnt get the real music for this game?
Looks amazing for the amiga but gameplay is bit pants
Even at 2x speed is a slow game!!!
In the next Episode of Neo the Godfather
Dogging bullets while shooting ...
It's cool and all, but it hardly ties with anything in the movies. There could be ways to make it work and still be more faithful I believe. Even small nods, like that Corleone Barbershop would be better if there was the Genco Olive Oil building there, or have a picture of young Michael in the intro since it was still 46. I know it sounds like asking too much of it for what it is, but like the Untouchables games were more concerned about that.
Richard Aplin always came across as a very capable and technically clever programmer, who for some reason had a history of making fairly naff games.
I agree - his technical chops were never in question, but always seemed to be handed hot potato projects that the machine really could never hope to deliver on. I believe he went to extraordinary lengths developing some kind of ripping system to get the original sprites out of the original Final Fight arcade ROMS.
@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays I love the graphics
@DrTune your opinion on that ? :D
Make it X2 faster, there you go. It's watchable now (:
Why not release The Godfather for the arcades?
I know graphics back then, as well as resources for coding a game weren't as rich as they are now a days, but some reaction from cops, pedestrians, bystanders and drivers would be interesting...the way they are there calm minding their own business during a crossfire in which a stray bullet can hit them is something surreal, even for these days' gaming patterns...
Cops were paid off to look the other way.
Is that gunfire or is it snowing?
It really is quite bad - the background art looks amazing, but the bullets are just a single white pixel!
I cant stop laughing. 😆 Someone should also make a similar videogame adaptation of Mrs. Doubtfire. 😆😆
This game was GTA from 32 bit.
But the police man don't doing nothing when listen the bullets.
34:10 Right in the kisser! LOL
Some of the backgrounds remind me of Street Fighter. Especially Vegas.
Getting all Scarface with that civilian helicopter that doesn't fit the time period of the movie.
Which helicopter are you talking about? The level with helicopter in the end is set in the 1980s.
I'm pretty sure the helicopter sequence is based on the massacre that occurs in Godfather Part III. If that's the case, then it does fit with the time period. Part III took place in the late 70s / early 80s. An unfinished script by Mario Puzo for a fourth film was in the works, which would have shown the downfall of the Corleone family during the 80s, but it was never completed due to Puzo's death.
Bang ... ... ... Uhh!
120 fps great!.
All the images where saved as iff's
So this game predates GTA3 by 10 years
Uuuuuuhhhhhhh
Shoot at the baby walker for extra points 🤣
Que tipo de OUT OF THIS WORLD (SNES) es este??? 🤔🤔🤔 jajajajajaja
Uhh!
uuh!
These graphics would be great in Streets of Rage Remake
Nope
3D
I can hear darth vader but can't see him lol
Those are some slow-ass bullets.
Everything's pretty slow in it 😉
It does look nice but I bet it gets very annoying to play after a bit, bullets slower than old people fuck.
34:45
Jojo part 5 in a nutshell
64 frames
Goddamn I sucked at this game when I was a kid. I don't think I got past the first stage. Definitely not beyond the FPS portion.
Graphics look good for their age. Gameplay looks weak
hahah el policia bien vale verga
This game is like slow motion movie, slow bullets, slow characters and slow everything,it's boring, also there is no logic in some parts, you shoot in the enemies from 2 meters distance from the police officer and he says: give me some coffee and I will let you shoot, haha
the control is so crispy, and the action so realistic and fast paced my god you gotta love the games made in the rotten usa!, Japanese developers has shit on this gem
46:04 KOWALSKI HARDWARE
Kowalski, analysis
Uuhhh
Game boy color 😂😂.
Man that's one beautiful awful game...
WTF
The coder of this game made 2 big mistakes:
1) He used software scrolling, instead of hardware scrolling. I guess that was to make easier to make an Atari ST conversion (btw, the Atari ST version is even more horrible than this).
2) He used a 32-colors mode, so the graphics were nice, but without hardware scrolling it was too much for the Amiga to move all those big 32-colors bitmaps, even for the Blitter chip. This resulted in a significant jerkiness that made The Godfather very bad to play.
Anyway, the gameplay was so boring and repetitive that even if the game had been super-smooth it would have sucked anyway...
I did try an A1200 config first, and while the 68020 makes a big difference, it moves TOO fast - it makes it look like a Benny Hill comedy sketch 😉
@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays I simply tried to play this video at 2x (with the youtube option to play a video faster) and on average it was good (with occasional times when it was a little too fast). Of course the game is bad in any case.
@Lassi Kinnunen In fact in my comment I wrote that the game would have sucked in any case, due to the very bad design. It's a shame, because the pixel art was good. Unfortunately the Amiga was full of games like this. There was no quality control, and many software houses (i.e. Us Gold) just wanted to release as many big titles as possible in a short time. They didn't care if the game sucked. The underpaid developers often had only 3-4 months to develop a game for both the Amiga and Atari ST.
Bam... Bam... Bam... Boring
Nice graphics but terrible controls and gameplay
When were blind people ever allowed to serve as police officers?? 😅
外人クオリティくそげー

What a very boring, repetitive gameplay... Some animations are very nice but the others too simple and weak. Graphic and the art is perfect but doesn't have any music. I think the biggest part of the videogames which made based on movies weren't good in that time (for example terminator or robocop 1-2), the main aim was the money not the prefessional gameplay.
Ocean's T2 was a bit of an acquired taste, but the three Amiga Robocop games were extraordinary, objectively speaking. The third may not stand the test of time, gameplay-wise, but it was a technical achievement for the time. 1&2, however, were polished, fun, had great music, graphics, smooth animations and were highly replayable.
@@oscarjimenezgarrido7591 Interesting, I liked the Robocop 3 in spite of the very poor vector graphic, but the other two games didn't have too big affect to me. Should i try them again? :)
@@zephyrke
Taste is everything, obviously, but yes, I'd say that both games are highly enjoyable. Specially the first, if you ask me. Regardless of my opinion, they were generally well received and liked back in the day, overall, and people used to mention them during friendly conversations about movie-to-videogame adaptations as commonly accepted exceptions to the 'suck' rule. I'd say yes, give 'em a chance, if you have the time and disposition - if you keep an open mind you might end up surprised by how well they play and how true to the spirit of the movies they were, specially for the time and age.
