I'm totally into GTA IV, and it's kind of baffling when folks diss its graphics. I mean, it dropped in 2008, and back then, nothing came close to its awesomeness. Even if you stack up Watch Dogs physics against GTA IV, it's a clear win . Imagine having those GTA IV physics in GTA VI-that would be insane. GTA IV is so underrated 🎮

Driver: San Francisco - great damage model for licensed cars. Also older Forza games (Horizon 1, Motorsport 4) has pretty decent car damage (incomparably better than the new versions).
There's a pattern in games where cars with real world licensed vehicles are less likely to deform than games with cars that are fictional I heard it's because cat companies dont want people to think their cars are flimsy? Idk for sure tho🤔

Most games use a script to show damages. Only BeamNG and GTA 4 and 5 use actual softbody physics. An old game with softbody physics was 1nsane. I think it was from 2000.
Noticing how much superior beamng is to every other car game is just amazing, I’ve played it for about 3 years and it’s great, the one thing they don’t have as good in these other games is the way the glass breaks, beamng drive just shatters evenly across, doesn’t have any affect to where the crash happened, just looks like shattered glass

Forza Horizon 1 actually had decent damage modeling. Horizon 2 was inconsistent since the AI cars had better damage models but ever since then it’s been going downhill

GTA IV’s doesn’t actually look good tbh, iirc cars didn’t deform like they were made from playdoh, the bumpers don’t detach in a heavy collision as well which is what usually should happen.
Man, in Gta 5 the vehicles are almost not even deformed. Gta 4 has a very impressive and realistic deformation. If you crash a vehicle in real life, you will get the same deformation as in Gta 4. Because in Gta 4, vehicles deform depending on your impact speed and the object you hit. Almost unpredictable.

In FH4 as i noticed, damages varies very much from car to car. I was playing only on Lamborghinis, so: Cars like Veneno, Centenario, Reventon and Sesto (the ones that are exclusive irl) has much lesser damages as Gallardo. Gallardo, as i remember, has very good damage model, but i noticed it only one time as i played FH4 pretty long time ago and for short periods. Also, crashing Lamborghini hurts my heart, so I'm to avoid this as much as possible

For Forza games, no matter Motorsport or Horizon. There's an option for 'realistic damge' where you can destroy your engine, gearbox, driveshaft etc. Also, for in-depth real time car performance data(including damge), press T on your keyboard.
Maybe, if you compare different game´s damage physics/models, you shouldn´t include games, that don´t have one in the first place. I also think you should test the limits of each game: how far can you destroy the car? What´s the limit? Is there even a limit?

For yoir comment to the mafia games: car bodys became stiffer over time. 30s has chassis like butter and even 60s and 70s got pretty smooth chassis

Come on guys. We all know that games with fictional cars have the best damage system. And will always be like that. Since companies IRL wouldn’t allow their cars being destroyed in the game. That’s an infraction, that leads to delisting of the game or something else bad.
