  • A review that is twice as long as the album its reviewing...but that is just because the EP is so dense that it needs this level of analysis. It is art at the highest level that certainly doesn't need my approval, but gets it all the same.
Plus...I have beef with a RUclipsr! I'm a real RUclips person now!

Over shoes song, you missed the 3rd dimension, the value of the sneaker may play later in his life to save him while he is running for his life. 4th explanation will be like He did paint a picture of walking in black man's shoe. I bet in future we will have more stories :) If you listen to wav files by Lupe or even Drogas wave album, he paints the history of african slavery man he will blow you away. I guess the thing that makes Lupe stick out for me is his way to always be vibrant with his thoughts that he translates to his music. His music isn't just concepts or being braggadocious, but how and why chooses to step in the element of those two ways to create art with his words. The fact that he can choose to be, "Complex" in a a project like "House EP" and how he can put you in the middle of the story like what he does on "Drogas Waves" There will never be another Lupe Fiasco in my opinion. He is the goat in a heard of so called black sheeps in the industry.

On the track "DINOSAURS" at the 3:02 to 3:04, I'm pretty sure the sample is of someone saying "Oh hi kids," is Mr. Dink from the animated TV Show "Doug."
It's a cool throwback. Mr. Dink, who was primarily the cooky next door neighbor, was also an epistemological figure. Through the course of the animated series, Mr. Dink gets Doug to think about things in a different way, which is what Lupe's doing in this track and in the album as a whole.
Not familiar with Doug and Mr. Dink? Here is a clip of Doug meeting Dink in the first episode of the series: ruclips.net/video/Vx0LxMBcNxo/видео.html. This show was one of the animated series that was on Saturday mornings on ABC, and reruns on Nickelodeon.

It just hit me, this track, Lupe's rapping to his kid(s), his pupils. Lupe is playing the part of the teacher passing down knowledge.
But how do we human beings pass down knowledge?
Human beings need a framework of metaphors, the sort that Virgil Abloh is meditating about on "HOMME MADE."
One can argue that Lupe is then using the dinosaurs as a framework to depict how our understanding starts full of flaws, which nonetheless, evolves. The abstract over time become concrete, their implications going on to affect every dimension of our everyday lives--media on tv, cereal on our table, plastics in our homes, gasoline in our cars.
Ultimately, the most humbling metaphor the dinosaurs serve for us is that they were once here, and now are not; just as we are here today and one day we won't.

    Hey there, about DINOSAURS:
According to Lupe Fiasco, in a conversation on The Joe Budden Podcast, the song has three layers to it. On the surface, it’s a history lesson on Dinosaurs. The song is however also a metaphor for older rappers still in the game like himself, Royce da 5'9 and Black Thought. Last but not least, it’s a look into the fragility of our existence.

Regarding the line "if you wanna use brain cave space as a metric for intelligence, the T-Rex wasn't the smartest of the smartest, but you wouldn't wanna box with the short-armed carnivorous martial artist" the first thing that comes to mind for me is Malcolm Gladwell's article None of the Above: What IQ Doesn't Tell You About Race. In it he raises the point that due to the trend of IQ scores rising by 3 points per decade world-wide since the tests were conceived, IQ doesn't measure intelligence. Rather, it measures to what extent one has developed and practiced the skills that modern society necessitates. Because the environment of the 50's/lesser-developed nations in terms of what skills are utilized is different, it tracks that the IQ tests which measure those particular skills would display higher scores with time. I feel like Lupe is making a similar point with this line: we can't restrict creatures--people or dinosaurs--to specific metrics of intellilgence, and instead can only evaluate them based on their performance in the context of their environment and what it demands

Lupe is my favorite artist and always has been, he’s the only celebrity I actually get any level of giddiness over even tho I know how silly that is, for instance he’s the only celebrity that I follow on IG, but his album the Cool was the first music album that I really got into
(The album is about things in the black community that we find “cool” but really aren’t so cool or good for us, and as a young Black male in high school at the time when I heard it, myself trying to make the best decisions and go on the path I felt and knew was best for me but feeling the social pressure it really hit home for me)
So since you’re asking about Lu my answer is this
    1. He’s definitely always worth looking into when he drops a project because you never know when it’s going to be some ground breaking stuff as you experienced with his project “House”
    2. Also everything he puts out is done with the energy of bettering us as people, helping humanity, enlightenment, discussion, etc.
    3. You never know what you’re going to learn or get to take away from what he puts out
    4. The only draw back I’ve found and what most people criticize him for is that his sound can change up quite a bit, but in all honesty this flaw that people have of him I’ve actually found to be a very strong attribute
Like for instance Lupe just put out House and you loved it so now if he drops a new project that feels completely different than House there’s a great chance of feeling disappointed, we get a thrill from something and had an expectation that possibly this new project would give us that same excitement and appreciation but it sounds so different that it feels as if we’ve been cheated
Like for instance I mentioned how I got into his music from his album the Cool, well his next album was called Lasers and it’s what everyone calls the disappointment of his career, it was a lot more pop sounding and even tho I enjoyed it on my first listen and the music is good there was a sense of disappointment because it sounds a lot different than the cool
(If you love Steph Curry because of his beautiful shooting and you take your son to a game and all of a sudden he’s only passing the ball there’s a natural disappointment)
But I’ve found now that Lupe is just really experimental, now on a ranking sheet this hurts him because when the average fan/music critics judge an artist there’s a very linear feel, for instance when Drake puts out a project you kinda expect a main stream feel, with beats that either are more slowed down almost R&B but not or with songs that could get you excited like in a club atmosphere, as a fan this is what you expect and this is what he constantly delivers so if his first project got high recognition well this new album fits the same mold so people view it similarly
However with Lupe the mainstream rap fan base or fans in general will love a project of his but then his next project will have an entirely different feel, sound, message (yet always positive) so they’ll say yeah it’s okay or decent BUT ITS NOT THAT OTHER PROJECT knocking him as not as good on people’s top rappers list, or someone worth listening to because it’s not consistent enough for their appetite
This fact though has become one of the favorite things about him to me, and has actually made me respect him more as an artist even if his career doesn’t match the criteria for “who’s the best rapper”
And this is because Lupe gives me a wide variety to choose from, he has songs that are my usual style to listen to that are masterpieces but then he also has projects like House where it’s more of a distinguished/classical/university feel or he has songs that are more pop, or that are more gangster rap feel etc
But the thing is with each song there are jewels that can be taken out and give you that mind blowing feeling
The best example I can give is he has a song called Next to it, and the lyrics are a lot more simple and it has a mainstream type beat and he dropped the song AND I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED, I was like Wtf he gave in to mainstream culture, but then a month or so later he drops the music video for the song and in the video he has an auction going on where no one is interested in buying anything (well ironically a white guy does buy the fan and the blender lol 🤣) but for the most part no one is interested and then in the video a girl starts standing next to the item and everyone loses their mind trying to buy it 😂😂 it was so incredibly a parody of mainstream radio rap lol I laughed so hard I made my friends leave their classes to come watch it ruclips.net/video/9gRPsz7Gf5k/видео.html
From that day I’ve learned to never write off a Lupe project because it sounds and feels different than I expected, it’s prob good practice to never write things all the way off even if I never touch them again but Lupe has especially earned that credence
Does that mean as a fan I force myself to love everything he drops, No, I haven’t even listened to House all the way through yet because it’s not my normal sound
But I appreciate Lu’s work because his discography is so vast yet all intelligent and bettering
If I hangout with my friends I pretty much know the style of music and feel we’re going to listen to, if I’m going to a party I know the feel, if I’m at my grandmothers house who loves classical I know the feel, when I was with my boss she loved a more country or pop feel and that’s what we listened to
But with Lupe he gives me the main dish of music that I like and prefer but sometimes my mood is more classical well he offers that, sometimes it is more pop he offers that, sometimes it is more gangster etc
I remembered when I used to Uber and this guy got in the car and I judged him and guessed he’d prob be more into a gangster hip hop so I put on Lupes song “the die” and his face scrunched up in a good way because he hadn’t heard it and he was like “WHO TF IS THIS, this is CRAZY” lol and then my next ride a women got in the car with her kids and I put on the Lupe song the show goes on which is a more pop upbeat feel and it fit perfectly and both songs had a positive take away point to them, That’s as dope as it gets to me
Maybe some people only like their genre but my mood changes on what type of music I want in any given moment, and I’ve also noticed the more you listen to a new sound the more you actually become okay with it and learn you do like it
So my advice on Lupe for you is that yes he really is THAT good, yes he’s a genius and a great artist
With that said the best way to be a fan of him Is to create 3 different categories
First is really fits you like House did
Second is kinda like it, kinda don’t, maybe good for a certain type of day
Third doesn’t fit me at all
Then when he drops something always give it a chance because you never know when it’s going to be a masterpiece or really thought provoking/connect with you/great addition for your main life soundtrack
But then when you’re in a mood of maybe wanting a love r&b song or pop or w.e is different than your usual but you still sometimes enjoy you can give those kinda like songs more of a chance
And then when you’re bored and just in an educational mood maybe wanting to listen to something almost like a musical podcast lol you can check out the dont fits OR maybe you’ll just be bored on RUclips one day and you’ll see some random guy doing a 47 minute breakdown of that Lupe project you kinda checked out but weren’t in the mood for yet lol 😂😂 just expected with Lu I remember seeing in the comment section once a guy who had written an essay for his class about his song “Adoration of the Magi” my 3rd favorite song of his lol
And the best part is that you know that everything he puts out however it’s genred or sounds has substance so you know while you’re diving in and out of all 3 of these categories you’re at least going to hear something that will give you a jewel, while at the same time the intelligence and substance is enough of a good reason to listen even if it’s just randomly checking into the “not fit” category which means your palette 🎨 is being given a great excuse to grow and stretch because we only grow when we’re uncomfortable
But that’s just what works for me for his music
If you want to check him out more Tetsuo & Youth is my favorite album of his and if you like House I think you’ll definitely like it
He has a 9min video on RUclips called the trilogy which is really dope
My favorite song of his is called Wav Files which makes me cry when hearing it so def dope and He say She say is my 2nd favorite
His first two albums Food & Liquor and The Cool are considered his classic albums and Drogas Wave 🌊 is a lot of people’s favorites as an album but all his stuff is worth looking into I don’t consider anything he has done as bad, it’s all at least good to really good in my opinion and who knows what you’ll take to, it all just has its time and place
Also Double Burger with Cheese with the video is dope
    Bitch Bad with the video
The RUclips channel TimesNuRoman does really cool vids breaking down his lyrics
He does a thing on his RUclips channel called super facts
Every freestyle he’s ever done on Sway OR his freestyle on Tim Westwood
    The song conflict diamonds!!
Oh and I REALLY think you'll like Animal Pharm!!
But ya I mean I think it’s known that rap genius either made their website or has a special appreciation for Lupe he really is the genius of our day that doesn’t get the recognition deserved but when the girl who says she only has dated assholes and hotheads and then says she’s attracted to you... is that really recognition?

I have way more respect for people who are not Hip Hop fans but recognize intellectual artists like Lupe than Hip Hop fans who only listen to Hip Hop artists that represent negative stereotypes of blacks.

I love the review but I think you're missing a huge point about the song Dinosaurs. It is specifically in reference to rappers and their coming of age. He has admitted this during a call with Joe Budden on his podcast. Budden admitted he didn't understand what the song was about and Lupe responded by saying, "It's about US"... as in older rappers

Shoe sole or the soul of the shoe helps our physical bodies standup
    And
our souls stand up to everything.
Even if you need sit outside you need some type of defined shoe wear.
Most places have no shoes no service signs, hence you cannot participate in the human conglomerate experience without a shoe soul of somekind.
In all your soul has no meaning without this soled soul.
