Seeing the Big Man on the saxophone is something the world sadly no longer has. The relationship between band members has always been something special about the E Street Band. Chuck must have been an honour to play with.
There are so many stories about Chuck and his backing bands. He didn't believe in rehearsals, or having his own regular band, and the 'band of the evening' was left to figure out what key he was playing in DURING the performance. Bruce tells a great story about that. Chuck also insisted on cash up front and would leave with a suitcase full of cash after all his performances. If you haven't seen the documentary 'Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll', I highly recommend. It shows Berry's style on and off stage up close and personal.
Also, Chuck would almost never play in tune. That’s fine, after all he is the King of Rock N Roll and the first troubadour of Rock N Roll as well as the first Rock guitar god. Love the fact that he never played in guitar keys always jazz keys or Johnnie Johnsons key.

In the movie "Hail hail rock and roll" Bruce tells a great story about the E Street band backing up Chuck before Bruce had made it big. Unbelievable story. I'm sure it's on RUclips somewhere.
Seeing Chuck Berry live actually makes you happy. I love being older. It gave me the chance to see all these men perform live. Chuck was 72 and still did the duck walk brilliantly. I was almost against the stage and for a second or two he made eye contact with me. We shared the joy of the song together. That was heady stuff. I am quite sure my face looked a lot like Springsteen’s at this show. Absolutely Star struck! Oh…I also saw Bruce and the E-street Band. My word they were amazing. I guess losing my hearing was worth getting my fill of music way back when.

This performance made me smile and also brought a tear to my eye. Chuck Berry use to come into a restaurant that I co-owned several years ago. I would see him and talk to him nearly every week. I wound up seeing him perform in St.Louis, and I was not disappointed! This man was a true entertainer! If you don’t find yourself wanting to tap your feet, move your hips, or sing along, then you need to loosen up! 😁 This was such an iconic song him. P.s. I saw you smiling the whole time the song was playing, you truly enjoyed it!
Another great analysis FIL, thanks. Just imagine being a young teenager in your bedroom all alone with a cheap $70 guitar and trying to learn those chords and riffs( that you showed) from your rock and roll idols. Then fast forward 30 plus years later in front of a full stadium of fans and you get to share the stage with that same idol playing that same song that must be so surreal.
Rock and Roll is supposed to be fun! It's real, it's raw, and uncensored. I love Chuck Berry's performance here, and the reverence Bruce has for a true legend of R&R. The E street band is not too shabby either. I never had the chance to see Chuck Berry in person, but I have seen Bruce twice, a dream come true.

Everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Marty McFly has covered it and that opening riff makes you stop whatever you're doing and pay homage to the master. That it took until 1972 for Chuck to get his first #1 with My Ding a Ling is an indictment on the industry. John Lennon put it best when he said: “If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it 'Chuck Berry," but my favorite tribute came from that great commentator on popular culture, Les Nessman: "Let's just say that every white rock and roll musician working today should take half of his or her paycheck and mail directly to Chuck Berry." Had the pleasure of seeing chuck play live some 25 or so years ago. My first surprise was he did fluff notes here and there. My second was that to this day, it's still the best gig I've ever been to. I've never known someone with such stage presence, and an ability to make you feel like he was playing JUST FOR YOU and everyone else AT THE SAME TIME. I was with a friend (I was the guitarist, he was the bass player) and we just kept looking at each other with the hugest grins on our faces. I've seen many big names, before and since, but nobody had that... magic. I can't imagine how the kids in the 1950's didn't have their brains explode!
Thank you for doing one of the giants, Fil. In my history class, I keep trying to teach the kids about the early days of rock 'n roll. Chuck Berry and Little Richard are two of my favorites. But, what a joy to see Chuck so into his song. Such a delight!

I saw Chuck Berry live around 1973 in Winnipeg. A local "oldies" band was the warmup and then Berry came out and they were onstage with him. Supposedly he always just hired a local band...Cuz he's "CHUCK BERRY"...!!!

This may be too basic a question, but sometime in one of your vids, could you walk us through the purpose of all of the dials and bars on your guitar? I'm not a guitar player or even a fan of metal, but I really do enjoy your videos and am in awe of your knowledge of music. Thank you for your patient teaching even while entertaining us!
Dials and bars? The bars I’m assuming you’re referring to are the pickups. The plastic oblong bits with the metal studs. The metal studs are magnets. There’s thousands of strands of copper wire wrapped around them under the plastic. This makes them an electro magnet. When the strings are struck, the vibrating string disturbs the electrical field and sends a small signal to the amplifier. The dials on that guitar are volume (bottom) and tone (one each for the middle and neck pickup). Traditionally a Fender Stratocaster doesn’t have a tone control for the bridge pickup.
Wallys rock ‘n’ rollers loved Chuck Berry. Whether it was the Beatles and Rolling Stones are Bruce Springsteen lol it’s right around the same time I’m listening to music, they idolized Chuck Berry. And I think Chuck appreciated Springsteen and his enduring friendship with Clarence Clemons since they were first into music. End it had to be great for Chuck Berry at this age to get up in front of a Springsteen crowd because they were notoriously huge at the stadiums and his concerts would go for like 3+ hours. I’ve never seen him but my brothers seen him several times, clued in when he was in the military in Germany. But being from New Jersey, I always preferred his earlier stuff, greetings from Asbury Park I absolutely love because I know everything he’s singing about. I think you gotta learn the key word being fun. I’d kill to have hands Chuck Berry. Actually, I’d be happy to just have good supination but that’s a birth thing and the way the bones are connected. Should never have taken up guitar. But you do what you can with what you have. Thanks for posting this it was definitely a fun video and your analysis was perfect!!

Also in this Chuck Berry seamed to enjoy playing with Bruce and the band a contrast to when with the rolling stoners a while before. Clarence Was so good withy the E street band and huge friend of Bruce.
Really love Chuck Berry, one of my favourite all time great guitarists, performers and song writers. Love those double stops, that give his playing that fantastic sound. A great character too and brings much fun to his concerts. Glad you showed us this analysis.
I don't know how many times I have heard Chuck Berry performing this... and others.. but man, it is one of the few songs I don't mind hearing even more after that... I really enjoy some of the performing aspects of this channel like why the fallback amp is there I hope in the ear monitors save the hearing of performers
I've read that Chuck Berry's instructions to his band-du-jour on how to start and end songs was, "Watch my foot! When it goes up, get ready! When it hits the floor, if you playin', STOP, if you ain't, START!" Mister Rock and Roll himself.
Was forced to an 'oldies' show many years ago.. didnt want to go, had no choice. Most of the show was unlistenable, I spent my time in the lobby smoking.. BUT THEN!!! That opening riff and my back got crazy! Chuck lit that place up like the 4th of july for an HOUR! Made everyone forget how bad the rest of the show was. Even the other acts were lined up on the side hooting and hollering. Needless to say he closed that show and left an impression on a LOT of people in that audience.
And there is the joy of rock and roll! Nothing else even comes close, except you-know-what! I feel so sorry for kids nowadays who have never even heard classic rock or Motown. I find them discovering it in "Reaction Videos" and the joy of discovery is written all over their faces! I sincerely hope that rap's and hip hop's days are numbered and everyone goes back to great rock and blues! 😉👌🎸🎸🎸🎶💖💖

I would love to see you on a stage with these iconic performers too! I love this performance too. Chuck Berry was such an influence to soooooooooooo many guitar players. I think the one that really shows the influence Chuck had on him was, Keith Richards. I also see a lot of Chuck in Joe Perry!!!! I see Joe Perry's influence in Slash and I see Keith Richards influence in Johnny Depp. So I guess the circle is so huge but they all have 1 person in common and that Man is the "Chuckster" himself,,,, The Late Great CHUCK BERRY. Lucky I got to see Chuck Berry in 2010 when he was in his 80's in a small opera house. He still did the duck walk. Chuck ends the show by playing "Reeling and a Rockin" while leaving the stage and going out the door. You can still hear him strumming when he is out of site.
Chuck was truly one of Rock's pioneers! Love the energy of this performance, with Chuck even doing a bit of his famed "Duckwalk" during the performance, acting very spry for a young (i think) 69 year old.
I saw Chuck at Wolverhampton Civic center in 1998. It was a great performance and a lot of fun. For the last two songs he invited some people from the audience up on stage to dance to around and around and I was lucky enough to get up on stage with Chuck. A real magic moment.

I saw Chuck Berry live around 1973 in Winnipeg. A local "oldies" band was the warmup and then Berry came out and they were onstage with him. Supposedly he always just hired a local band...Cuz he's "CHUCK BERRY"...!!!

I'm not a guitar player or even a fan of metal, but I really do enjoy your videos and am in awe of your knowledge of music. Thank you for your patient teaching even while entertaining us!

Dials and bars? The bars I’m assuming you’re referring to are the pickups. The plastic oblong bits with the metal studs. The metal studs are magnets. There’s thousands of strands of copper wire wrapped around them under the plastic. This makes them an electro magnet. When the strings are struck, the vibrating string disturbs the electrical field and sends a small signal to the amplifier.
The dials on that guitar are volume (bottom) and tone (one each for the middle and neck pickup). Traditionally a Fender Stratocaster doesn’t have a tone control for the bridge pickup.

Wallys rock ‘n’ rollers loved Chuck Berry. Whether it was the Beatles and Rolling Stones are Bruce Springsteen lol it’s right around the same time I’m listening to music, they idolized Chuck Berry. And I think Chuck appreciated Springsteen and his enduring friendship with Clarence Clemons since they were first into music. End it had to be great for Chuck Berry at this age to get up in front of a Springsteen crowd because they were notoriously huge at the stadiums and his concerts would go for like 3+ hours. I’ve never seen him but my brothers seen him several times, clued in when he was in the military in Germany. But being from New Jersey, I always preferred his earlier stuff, greetings from Asbury Park I absolutely love because I know everything he’s singing about.
I think you gotta learn the key word being fun. I’d kill to have hands Chuck Berry. Actually, I’d be happy to just have good supination but that’s a birth thing and the way the bones are connected. Should never have taken up guitar. But you do what you can with what you have. Thanks for posting this it was definitely a fun video and your analysis was perfect!!

Also in this Chuck Berry seamed to enjoy playing with Bruce and the band a contrast to when with the rolling stoners a while before. Clarence Was so good withy the E street band and huge friend of Bruce.
Really love Chuck Berry, one of my favourite all time great guitarists, performers and song writers. Love those double stops, that give his playing that fantastic sound. A great character too and brings much fun to his concerts. Glad you showed us this analysis.
I don't know how many times I have heard Chuck Berry performing this... and others.. but man, it is one of the few songs I don't mind hearing even more after that...
I really enjoy some of the performing aspects of this channel like why the fallback amp is there I hope in the ear monitors save the hearing of performers

I've read that Chuck Berry's instructions to his band-du-jour on how to start and end songs was, "Watch my foot! When it goes up, get ready! When it hits the floor, if you playin', STOP, if you ain't, START!" Mister Rock and Roll himself.
Was forced to an 'oldies' show many years ago.. didnt want to go, had no choice. Most of the show was unlistenable, I spent my time in the lobby smoking.. BUT THEN!!! That opening riff and my back got crazy! Chuck lit that place up like the 4th of july for an HOUR! Made everyone forget how bad the rest of the show was. Even the other acts were lined up on the side hooting and hollering. Needless to say he closed that show and left an impression on a LOT of people in that audience.
There was just something so bright and clear with Chuck Berry.

And there is the joy of rock and roll! Nothing else even comes close, except you-know-what! I feel so sorry for kids nowadays who have never even heard classic rock or Motown. I find them discovering it in "Reaction Videos" and the joy of discovery is written all over their faces! I love this performance too. Chuck Berry was such an influence to soooooooooooo many guitar players. I think the one that really shows the influence Chuck had on him was, Keith Richards. I also see a lot of Chuck in Joe Perry!!!! I see Joe Perry's influence in Slash and I see Keith Richards influence in Johnny Depp. So I guess the circle is so huge but they all have 1 person in common and that Man is the "Chuckster" himself,,,, The Late Great CHUCK BERRY. Lucky I got to see Chuck Berry in 2010 when he was in his 80's in a small opera house. He still did the duck walk. Chuck ends the show by playing "Reeling and a Rockin" while leaving the stage and going out the door. You can still hear him strumming when he is out of site.

Chuck Berry was my 2nd live show as a kid in the 70's. Much like this performance he had the crowd in his hands the entire show.
Chuck was truly one of Rock's pioneers! Love the energy of this performance, with Chuck even doing a bit of his famed "Duckwalk" during the performance, acting very spry for a young (i think) 69 year old.

I saw Chuck at Wolverhampton Civic center in 1998. It was a great performance and a lot of fun. For the last two songs he invited some people from the audience up on stage to dance to around and around and I was lucky enough to get up on stage with Chuck. A real magic moment.
