1978: Historic May flood hits New Orleans

  • On the morning of May 3, 1978, the heavens opened and more than 10 inches of rain descended upon the New Orleans area.
    Streets and buildings flooded. Pumps were overworked. The airport shut down and life was miserable for just about everyone.
    It was one of a series of deluges that have struck Louisiana in may - notably in 1953, 1994 and 1995.
