Great review Ola. I am loving the Tonex...the whole line. Gotta jump right in and get some models from the library tho. The stock ones are mostly just starters.

this is a genius idea and a must buy for me. ... dayum this is amazing
I've owned a Tonex for a year, and I gotta say, it blows other profiling units that cost 4x as much out of the water in terms of accuracy. But, one of the biggest complaints I've seen is the fact that you can't combine amp captures with pedal captures without doing it during the actual capture process. With this, I can now have the full size unit for amp models, and this smaller unit for stomp models. I will definitely be saving up to buy one of these. Fuckin stoked.
@@SxSxG666 With the original, yes, but with the One version you would need something like a DI box. You could also plug the One into your interface and use the headphone out from that.
I'm loving the trend of tiiiiiiny modeling devices lately (Tonex One, L6 HX One, POD Express). I'd love to see something similar from NDSP that can just flip through various captures. We're in the era of hyper-micro flyrigs!
I remember about 10 years back wanting solid options for preamp pedals so badly as I just didn’t have the space or need for a big tube amp. Now there’s no shortage of products competing at really compelling price points. This is insane to see for the price and with the fidelity in the amp sounds this will be a great product for guitarists of all types. Really seems that IK is hitting the mark at meeting guitarist needs which is surprising as it’s not really something they were super well known for. In any event I’m all for it and looking forward to what the current climate of competition does for other products moving forward.
I have the original Tonex pedal. Insane bang for your buck. I reamped a riff through it using my amp capture as well as my real amp with the captured settings and I can't hear a difference that would be anywhere near significant e.g. in a mix or live situation. Now I use it with my analog pedals in my pedalboard as the amp (with midi control to switch amps and effects). Excellent stuff. Need to see if this could replace some of my drive pedals if I capture them into this.
@@menschlicheswesen84 you can assign midi control to your Tonex pedal presets and parameters to be controlled with external devices (now talking about the larger version of the pedal). Tonex also has midi out so you can control external devices, but I haven’t used that.
Damn, this is like the ultimate tour backup rig just in case. Fits anywhere, can be powered with a USB battery pack, and you can just go into the FX return of the house amp and be good to go. Amazing for packing light for fly-in gigs as well
I pre-ordered the app before there ever was a pedal it just sounds great It's not easy to make your own great sounding captures but it is rewarding and you can make some that are very good for a mix that you would never use in a live setting but as you're making ability improves and maybe even you get better gear you can continue to keep your sound forever in the ecosystem not somebody else's but what you hear in a room
Been wanting a Badlander and now that i see you made a capture of one... It could be like.. Hey bring your Badlander over to jam . nah don't wanna carry it and lug it around. Oh wait. Let me bring the Tonex One with the capture of it. BOOM! amazing time to be alive that is for sure.
Seeing these videos (saw Fluff made one also) makes me even more confused at Thomman reviews... they all complain it's hard to use presets. But Ola is just like "now you grab this, put it there, and boom it works". Some reviews mention that after learning how to use it it's easier, so I'm guessing all I'll have to do is learn how to use the thing I buy and I should be good. Super excited about it. Thank you for the awesome video
Bloody hell! So, I have an HX Stomp, and adding this just boosts my small rig by tons. In the studio (and live) HX Stomp + tonex one. And in the studio Helix native + tonex app. Same rig in both places and no need to move them or buy more hardware. Wicked!
This is actually a noise gate what modules down the noise. Therefore you can hear the distortion better. (that the amp doesn‘t overdrive) But also adds some extra gain possibilieties.
Dude, remember to take a break, and don't let Yourself to be forced into anything that You don't want to do! Just looking out for Your wellbeing, that's all, Buddy! 😊
Pretty sick ! Gonna check it out ! So does it store settings you upload from the ToneX app ? Or do you have to travel with a laptop ? Pretty amazing stuff 👏
I wish it had MIDI. Even a TRS to midi port would be fine. This would have been sweet to put two of these into a helix effects loop for amps to fee up more processing in the helix.
My rig consist of a 96 fender lonestar strat, an old, old, old 75 watt fender jam amp, with a power amp input and a FR triple cone celestion 12" full range speaker, topped off with an old HD 500x. My rig was getting dated, so I was checking into a Helix, or one of these other thousand dollar plus boards. Then, I had an idea! buy one of these and put it through my effect loop, defeat the onboard amps, and presto, a completely upgraded POD! It sounded so good that I bought a second one to use in stomp mode. So, for 360 bucks, I have a rig that sounds as good, or better than a Helix, live. Can't beat that with a stick! Bonus, the pedals are black, and small enough to mount on either side of the display screen.
I wonder how it sounds with the IR off and plugged into an effects return of a tube amp! This is really cool actually. Maybe even better than the bigger one. You really only need two amps one for clean and one for metal.
The only thing I am missing from my gear is profiling. Was tempted to get a headrush or big toneX or any multi fx that support profiling, but now.. This just makes a whole lot more sense..
man.. could I use this directly to my focusrite 18i20 interface? and use the focusrite outputs/preamps to a 4x12 cab/front of house? or do I still need something like a Seymour poweramp pedal?
I have the tonex pedal and I like it a lot, I understand the minimalistic idea behind this but I'm not sure the controls are useful. I believe it is better to build your tone on the app and use the pedal just as a player. Volume control is definetly usefull but an easy and quick way to switch between the 20 presets (maybe in banks of 2) will be more interesting than bass mid high controls. I think on stage you don't want to mess around with controls but just play the sound you saved.
The thing is, we've had the Mooer Radar for a couple of years now, and the TC Impulse came out last year. So a mini rig has been doable for a while now. That said, I wonder how the sound quality would compare between these three mini units? That will be the metric on whether the Tonex 1 will be worth the extra cost.
That Tonex seems interesting. I would like a comparaison with Two Notes, and Fractal Audio which are for me the best things to have when you can afford those incredible toys.
TONEX ONE is nice! Guitar processors can make a big difference in sound depending on the CAB IR you use. actually there are many IR products on the market, but I think DYNAX IR has the best sound. As stated in their product description, DYNAX IR is really fast. When using IRs, the pick attack is sometimes delayed, and it is difficult to add picking nuances, but their IR prevents all of that. It's revolutionary!
That's an awesome little machine! The main drawback that I'm seeing is that it has no FX Loop to be able to use it with some delays and reverbs, nor some kind of MIDI in to control the presets Other than that, looks pretty rad
The reason these units don't have an FX loop is there is little sonic difference between putting reverbs and delays post-cabinet (as with this unit), than in an FX loop. An FX loop is only useful with a real amp where it is impossible to put a reverb or delay between the amp and cab.
