  • Customer was complaining that the boiler is making countless attempts to ignite the flame... specially in the mornings...Hey..May be boiler had a late night! Well... let me be serious.. it was the boiler PCB. Once we replaced the boiler PCB.. that problem was sorted.

as Crobular says below, this is a problem with the capacitors on the PCB.
If you know what you are doing, you can replace these and it will only cost you £5. A new PCB is £180 + more if you want someone to fit it.
There are 3 electrolytic capacitors that need replacing.
You can buy these online from Switch Electronics in Hull (now Maplin has gone bust).
Here are the order codes. You need 2x 22uF/63V and 1x 4.7uF/63V.
I replaced these on mine and the problem was solved
    22uF/63V - 353177 - 2 of these
    4.7uF/63V - 353175
    - 1 of these
Getting to the board is fiddly, but can be done. Isolate the mains before you start and
note the polarity of the caps on the board. The +ve terminal is labelled on the PCB

Hi, I bled one rad without switching the boiler off and the boiler stopped working. It's a Profile 80e. Is it likely that I've lowered the pressure in my system below its threshold? If so how do I resolve this problem?

I had a Prima (or might be profile) 50f LPG boiler and just out of the 12 months warranty (why wouldnt it) stopped igniting - for a couple of years afterwards the way I used to light it is open the front cover and on start up stick one of those log gas wands you light the gas hob with. Worked fine like that for years. I knew exactly what it was.
It was a thing on the PCB that looks like a surge arrestor device (its glass with 2 metal ends and the feet coming out of it and then soldered onto the PCB board) but I was too stingy to get it fixed (believe at a time you could send your PCB board away to this place in UK and they 'reconditioned' it and sent it back to the customer 80quid I think it were to get it done.
Still got this boiler laid up in the shed here and on trying to get rid of it I was trying to sell it for 50quid just to get it out of the way. no takers. Such a shame, the cast iron exchanger in excellent condition the casing not too bad, the fan and all other electrics such as thermostat and valves etc all immaculate. Someone told me to just drop it into scrap metal place one day - seem such a shame though when a lot of these parts are good on it.

It may be not the fault PCB in every case . Same problem can arise from fan pressure too low, Faulty Air pressure switch or blocked tubes, Corrosion in the flue to air pressure tube connectors .. etc..
If your boiler fails while the Fan running and no spark - then - all the above need to be verified before replacing the PCB. Best thing is to get a Gas Engineer who knows how to test these components and then how to isolate the faulty part and then repair or replace.
Fact is that you may experience the same situation but it may be a different part which is faulty!

Gas engineer ?? Best of luck. Learn how the boiler works and fix it yourself. Very simple.!!.

I have the exact same issue with my potterton profile 60el boiler (2004 make). Its trying to start and then stops and keeps doing this repeatedly but does not fire up.

Vijay Kanth Same problem with our one we’ve got with the potterton profile e50 just constant start up retries.

@@jamierose252 Not sure if you've managed to fix the problem yet, but I fixed mine by changing 3 electrolytic capacitors on the PBC myself. Crobular I has commented here about what's needed to be changed. Cost me £1.50 for the 3 capacitors but you need to have some basic soldering skills. Saved me a quote of £450 from the service company to replace the PCB.

You do not need a new expensive PCB !!. Just renew the 3 electrolytic Caps in it. 1 off 4,7uf 63 VW. 2 off 22uf 63VW Caps if I remember correctly. Just check the values. The electrolyte dries out with the heat over time. It`s done !!. Cost ? 50P.
