I often return to this piece as comfort food. Just perfect on every level.
Helene's silky touch and powerful and emotional message! Wonderful performance.
As a teenager more than half a century ago I received this jewel as a gift from Maria Grinberg. And here is another magician giving it back to me just as chrystal-clear and unspoiled.
Her performance brings out an aspect of the music which I had not noticed before: the Tempest is a swirling collection of miniature motifs. Grimaud brilliantly and delicately executes while exhibiting elemental power.
She creates her own rhythm along with the actual rhythm 😅 this is by far the most beautiful interpretation of this piece i have ever heard!

Например: Кемпф, Рихтер, Гульд, Аргерих играют абсолютно по-разному, каждый по-своему, и каждый -гениально. Я просто потрясён интерпретацией Элен Гримо. Игра настолько совершенна, что ты ощущаешь и страсть и холод одновременно. Блистательно, чудесно. Спасибо.

bellissimo Allegretto. adoro la versione di Gould, ma anche di Kempff che è tutto l'opposto, come pure questa della Grimaud. il bello della classica è proprio questo; ogni grande artista mette la propria anima e sensibilità al servizio della musica e di chi la ascolta. a volte leggo dibattiti assurdi su chi è il pianista più bravo, chi la suona meglio, chi la suona peggio....stupidaggini.

Der Kniff dieser Interpretation ist es den rhythmischen Allegro-Impuls des ersten Satzes über das Adagio zu tragen, um ihn im Allegretto aber überraschned wieder aufleben zu lassen. So ergibt sich ein für diese Pianistin typisch beseelter Zusammenhang der ganzen Sonate.

This third movement is probably the most impressive play i've heard of it. To me this is the best rendition of the tempest sonata, close to Barenboim.

Eh, I like the music, but her rendition is too much about the individual performance rather than the piece at large and the 3rd movement illustrates this for me.
Matthew Chorney Just try Solomon (Cutner), Wilhelm Backhaus or Friedrich Gulda. I prefer those three pianists for Beethoven's sonatas. But Artur Schnabel is also excellent at Beethoven (even though I dislike his many mistakes).
I don't like Wilhelm Kempff at all with Beethoven's sonatas. Artur Rubinstein and Krystian Zimerman also performed excellent Beethoven sonatas! :D

A joyful and wonderful Piano sonata. H. G. presents delightful vibrant energetic sound, bravura, especially in the 3rd. movt.; rhythmical effect given that charming sparkle to the melody. HG performs a majestic rendition!
