Just came across your video and was so moved by your reaction. Gerry knew how to write a song and had such a mellow voice. Many of his tracks were autobiographical, either about his relationships, family or his opinions of the music industry.
His voice was stunning, lovely tone and pitch. I think this is my favourite GR's song Beautiful to listen too, harmonies were magnificent almost heavenly and those fabulously tragic lyrics! One of Scotland's finest exports. Still relevant in 2024
Gerry wrote and sang in a very understated way. The lyrics, the way it is produced is just brilliant It feels like a hymn Your emotional reaction is lovely, you have a good heart
In 1972 Gerry Rafferty was in the Scottish folk rock band Stealers Wheel & had a big hit with "Stuck In The Middle With You". Later on, he went out on his own & then had the big hits "Baker's Street", "Right Down The Line" & "Night Owl".
I'm a 67 year old musician and guitar builder.,Classically educated for three years before I played an instrumument. The Harmonies are done by his brother and sisters. I was Brought up on all the good stuff. So happy to see young people geting into the great music I lived and learnt from. Keep it up youngstes!
I have been a avid listener of Gerry Rafferty for many years.(Gerry is pronounced with a J)he was very underrated but had some massive hits .He passed away in 2011 ,I believe he was a bit of a recluse.Watching your reactions to the song brought a tear to my eye, that his music still tugs at the heart. I intend to follow your channel. Have you ever listened to Beth Heart singing Mama it’s very touching.
The wonderful Gerry Rafferty. My favourite artist. A true master of his art. His songs are stunning pieces of art. Have a listen to many of his other brilliabt songs, such as: Dont Speak Of My Heart, Its Easy to Talk. Winters Come, The Royal Mile, Welcome to Hollywood, Light of Love, Night Owl, Right Down The Line and Shipyard Town ( my favourite). You wont be disappointed. Enjoy.
Just happened across your comment and couldn’t agree more. I love Gerry’s work and some of his deeper cuts are just as good if not better than his more well known work. I too love Shipyard Town, when I heard it on the radio it prompted me to get North and South which started my love of GR and ended up with all his albums
A truly wonderful singer songwriter, who tragically died from alcohol addiction. He hated the music industry, and fame, but he has left a huge musical legacy.
If you like your music with an emotional punch I would suggest search out the video on here of his friends and family singing this at the show they put on after Gerry passed.
That man could write a song!
