I've started getting into Formula racing bc of the Netflix show and in the 1st season, episode 1, a Haas car (fairly new team, very small, only 216 employees TOTAL), came in the box & the pit crew didnt tighten the (lug nuts?) tire completely and they had to pull out of the race. Then tragically, there SECOND driver came in for a pit stop and had the EXACT same happen! Just on a different tire! It was devastating bc they were in the 4th and 5th position and were the underdogs!!! So my question is...why did the guy press the button if he thought it was completely secure? And why can't they just invent a sensory device that gages the tightness? Then they wouldn't have to press a button...or have human error occur. Thanks for the video btw...I learned a lot! 🩷👌
Back in the day, pit-stops used to have refueling mid-race, now, you have one big fuel tank, and you must manage the whole fuel for the entire distance.
To answer your question, NO and as you just said, they did that for safety reasons and we all have seen so many accidents while having to refuel on each pit.
If they can change tires in under 2 seconds, why not design tanks to do the same? Re-fueling should be brought back by swapping tanks like tires. Much safer. Quick couple connections, pre determined amounts of fuel for maximum strategy and handling (Williams/Nigel Mansel) Could use a jib crane or jacks to remove and install tanks. First team to do it wins in the pits.
Would that work?? Wouldn't you have to completely redesign the car and have the fuel tank possibly exposed? I dunno...good idea but I'm not sure if it's possible. Plus They RARELY run out of fuel if measured correctly right? What the FIA says goes...but great idea! Just like I was thinking they should have sensors in the tire guns that would automatically tell you when the lug nut is on tight enough and they wouldn't have to press a botton and have room for possible human error that could result in tragedy. I just saw a race on Netflix where the Haas car had not ONE car with a loose nut have to pull out of the race...but there SECOND car IMMEDIATELY after...just different tires! So that means TWO different air gunners F'd up! It was INSANE!!
@@Bubbles_11 I don't know if your questions were answered yet but your suggestions about sensors in the guns is a real thing. The guns do many things, actually. First, they have a lighting system on them, which changes color depending on the mode. For example, one color to tell the operator that the gun is in "remove the nut" mode, another color to tell him it is in "install the nut" mode and yet another color to tell him the nut is tight. Going back to the install/remove modes, the gun switches automatically, so the operator doesn't need to do that, nor does he have to press a button to tell the computer the nut is tight. That is automatic, as well. All four guns are linked to a central system, which also links to the jacks on the front and rear of the car. The jacks are raised manually but released automatically, only when the signal from all 4 guns is received, telling them that all nuts are installed properly. If one or more nuts are not locked on, the jacks will not release the car.

i have a question. if all cars are managed by one pit crew, who determines which driver to attend to if more than one driver requires tyre changes.
