- In this video I’ll show you how to repair the passenger side power sliding door of this 2004 Toyota Sienna the “cheap” way by cutting the sliding door cable which has came off the spool and snapped making the door unable to open.

Thank you so much! I have been living with an inoperable door for 5+ years. Toyota dealership told me they would repair the door for $2200. Cable assembly alone was $1600. I said just disconnect it so I can use it manually; they said that couldn't be done. Just made it operable in less than 10 minutes. Again, many thanks!

I have the same issue. I don't mind buying new motors later or whatever. I just would like the doors open.

@@stevensautomotiveexperience well, I did everything you said minus taking the panel off. I can't seem to wedge the door open. It's like it needs DW40 or something.
@@DavidrKun Did you disable the power sliding door feature? And yes those cables could get rusty, you may just need to have someone pull the door as much as possible so that you can get in there and cut that cable. Thanks for watching.

My 2004 Sienna drivers side cable broke 2 weeks ago. 3 days ago the passenger side started to hang. Toyota quoted me at $890 for one side. I was unable to remove the plastic clip with the tools I have. I opened the door about a foot and rolled down the back window and just removed the 2- 10mm head bolts so I could remove the plastic bracket easily. Worked perfect with a short extension. I removed the plastic cable bracket with my finger once it was off. I then cut the cable at the rear end of the window and at the door. I did this to both doors in about 20 minutes. Both doors work perfect, just not automatic. I'm happy. Many have said the cables broke again after Toyota replaced them. I'll save my $1800 for something I really need. Thank you for sharing. UPDATE: I went to Toyota on 10/7/21 for an oil change and they changed their price to $1400 for each cable. They also offered to change all my fluids including brake fluid for $661. Nah, I'll just have the oil change..

Many many thanks for this video. For me, it really helped to roll down the window (driver's side). I was then able to pry out the cable end box easily with the door open a little. I was barely able to open the door a few inches before I did that. Afterward, I could fully open the door. Cutting the door cable was quick. Literally a five minute job and now it works great as a manual door. I don't need an automatic door on the driver's side but I'm happy that it lasted 13 years (June 2008-June 2021)

So I did this as a temporary fix .Worked like a charm! hen I also called the Toyota dealer April 30th 2022 and they told me they would fix it for free since it is a safety . Apparently safety recalls transfer with the VIN number i and don't expire. Win win!

Good example of when less is more. Don’t get more complicated options unless you really need them. I have a 2003 Sienna with manual doors and have had zero problems with them.
Great video. $1K to $2K just saved. Sure my 18 year old Sienna doesn't have all of the original bells and whistles, but some things are not worth trying to make as new.
Toyota is aware of the defect of this door. I have an 04 sienna xle and contacted the administrative office of Toyota and received $1,500 to repair the door. I suggest everyone to do the same.
Yes they are, there's actually an specific Toyota Technical Service Bulletin for this issue and Toyota extended the warranty time for this which I'm sure by now in September of 2020 you're on your own. I have the same year Sienna XLE and got no where with Toyota. I was told that program expired for my Van in 2013

Where did you get that information. I talk to a supervisor at a Toyota repair place and they are not aware of such a claim to fix you sliding door. Guy wants to charge me )100.00 just see what’s wrong and them I have to pay for them to fix it.

Me also. On our 2015 Sienna left door cable broke today. Had to force door open enough to snip cable. Now it’s a manual. Oh no we will have to use muscle force to open and close. But at least we have the right side yet and electric windows. So we don’t get to much exercise!! Thanks for the information.

Today I am able to open and close my door thanks to this video. My 2004 passenger side only, also has door assist,with the wire snapped and door shut. I was able to open it with pressing the button on top by rearview mirror. first day it only opened alittle then today it made some noise but opened it far enough to pull the wire.

It's 2023 and I'm going to look at a 2007 Sienna, I hope it has manual doors but if it has automatic doors and they are broken I will do what you have done here.

Nice video! Just bought an 04 and going to use it for mail car passenger side can open manually but theirs a part where tha cable is i guess partly unravel and when it hits that it gets harder to open definitely a first world problem but would like to see if i could fix it
Totally about to do this on my 2006 inspection time is here and I don't want to have to pull off door panels and replace parts on an older vehicle. Mine was just bound and wouldn't open any further on one side the other door still works automatically

Hi there, I'm not exactly sure check your owner's manual.
I have a handicap van and the cable broken 3 times in 2years it’s very expensive to get it fixed since it’s connected to the ramp please tell me if we can put a cable and motor in the door and separate it from the ramp so the cable problem can be solved, please help I am stranded without the handicapped van.

Hey there, Thank you for watching! If the pulley/cable assembly is not so badly damage internally you can actually force the door open, (remember to disable the power slide door feature first with the button on the dash) all you need is about 1/3 of the door opened and then you can proceed with cutting the cable. Hope that helps!!!

You, would have to remove the door panel from the inside of the vehicle along with the whole actuator/cable assy thats attached to the door it self so that you can get to the cables and cut them. Unfortunately, at that point it won't be so easy.

@@orvillegroven186 You're not giving me much info to get an idea of what's happening here, I would say make sure you've disable the power slide door feature with the button located in the driver's side. It should open & close after you cut the cable. Good luck!

It is not B's. It works.
Maybe the child lock switch got switched on accidentally during the repair. You can see it when the door is open. it's on the panel that faces the front of the car, near the handle
@@loribeckberger4430 no it all started when the latch that locks in when the door closes won't lock in it just pops the door back out because it's Rusty or something and it needs to be replaced or the hinges off balance and it's making the door hang off the weight there's a latch and a hinge towards the back of the door that it either offset or Rusty and it won't let the door close and lock in it pops back open but then when I force it s*** sometimes the locking mechanism on the front of the door locks in place everything gets stuck and the only way you can get the door open as if it magically unlocks itself sometimes when you turn the car on otherwise you're going to have to like bust a hole in the door panel just to open it
And that is just that door the door on the other side the sliding door cable broke on its own I never replaced it yet but it also has a hard time opening from the inside unless I rig it a certain way and half the time that don't work and then I have to get outside to open it from the outer door so my passenger has just stuck sitting there until I get out and open the door

For future reference, if purchasing a Toyota or Kia minivan, don’t get a power door option. The motors are underpowered and the cables & attachments are weak and prone to failure. The manufacturers have no interest in correcting these deficiencies, so don’t waste any money on them

The fact that you said customer makes me afraid that you charged someone to “fix” their car and did this. The correct part to replace cost $60 and takes 30 minutes to change

I would respectfully disagree. Rigging is when you're adding something to it make work. In this scenario I didn't add anything, instead I eliminated a part so that the door could open and close.
Now if you want the door to operate as designed then you would need to replace the faulty part. Thanks for watching!
