Lets Move A Massey Harris 44 Special To The Shop- Hydraulic Issue

  • Today we move the Massey Harris 44 Special that sprayed a wide 20 foot long plume of hydraulic oil all over me, the side of the shed and the tractor itself during the 'first start' of the tractor after coming here to live. It had been sitting for a year or more at the previous owners location and in his defense, he alerted me to a small oil leak under the seat. Let me say that was a gross UNDERSTATEMENT !! Well, I finally have the time to get this one into the shop and got my son to give me a hand moving it the distance as I have never started the tractor again. And actually, it's been probably two years since that previous mentioned occurrence.
    Then we get to remove the seat and other things to get access to the control vave/hydraulic cylinder hiding under the seat. It's not real easy, but we get the assemby off and finally expose the horrible attempt at repairing a cast iron housing. Believe me, there is no repair to it now, it must be replaced. So that's the jist of the video today...the salvaging of another component from a donor tractor, disassembly and cleaning and the start of reassembly. Though its not labeled part 1 of 2, that's what this video really is. Well, I HOPE its only 2 episodes to get this tractor back on line and in working order. If not, oh well, there will be 3 parts. #massey, #tractor, #diy

      Good Evening Nelson. Good to hear from ya. Hopefully a few minor things besides this casting and it'll be ready to go to work. When It sprayed me full of oil, I only ran it for 3 or 4 seconds so I don't know yet how well she's gonna run. Gotta be something needing a bit of fiddling though, I'm sure.

      It's not too bad, the most aggravation coming from dealing with the nasty grease and dirt plus the rusty components on the donor machines. It's just nice to have spare parts on Death Row.

      Coupling it up on the inside of the housing is gonna be an aggravation because you can't 'see' the things that have to slip together. But I'm pretty sure it'll work but if not, I still have another option or two Tom. Good Morning and you two have a great week as well.

      Yessir Clarence, the attempted repair was done by the previous owner. I think there's a little nickel rod and also some stainless blobbing on it. I'm sure this is going to turn into a good machine. I'm expecting some minor issues to get it sorted out though.

      Those were BIG tractors in their day when many farms were using tractors the size of N series Fords and a few were still using mules. When my uncle bought a 44 Diesel in 1952 it was the biggest tractor in the county and the only diesel. Some 60 years later I was in the Massey dealership and mentioned that we had an old 44 Diesel my uncle bought new. The dealer's dad who was in his mid 90s overheard the conversation and piped up and immediately called my uncle's name and said: "I remember when he bought that tractor, that was the only 44 Diesel around here." If that old man still remembered who owned that tractor 60 years on it must have been a BIG DEAL back in the day!

      @tractorman4461  2 месяца назад

      WD 40 is our friend when it comes to old tractors Nigel. Not having a 555D I'm not totally sure of the arrangement of the hydraulics...but it sure sounds like you are on the right track. The pump is definitely ran by belt off the crankshaft. There's only one hydraulic system on these tractors that power the steering and the rear lifts.

    Do you know if parts are available to rebuild the hydraulic control valve on a 44? We have a 1952 44 Diesel with a factory three point lift that has not worked in over 40 years. When it stopped working, my dad went to the Massey dealer and they told him they didn't have parts to rebuild it but could sell him a new valve. He said they wanted more $$$ than he paid for the whole tractor for that valve. Times were tight on the farm in the '80s and since that old tractor was by that point mostly used for raking hay, running the grain auger and pulling wagons (none of which used the three point) it never got fixed. I'd like to fix it and was just wondering if that is even possible on a tractor that is now 72 years old.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  Месяц назад

      I'd seriously doubt if you could find dealer supplied parts, but I would look for an assembly form a guy parting out a known running tractor. There are plenty of them out there. If you have access to Facebook, go to a Massey Harris page...just type in Massey Harris Groups in the search bar on FB and you'll find a good number of them.
      As long as you kept hydraulic fluid in it, the hydraulic pump hasn't ran dry and ruined...but if it DID run dry for an extended period, I'm sure you can buy an entire hydraulic set up pretty easy. I think I have a follow up video on this repair. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/5dv31aGm4Qo/видео.html There will soon be another video showing the hydraulic install and first real start. So you can see how easy replacing the whole assembly really is. Thanks for watching and sorry for the delay in response, I've been building a shed for my daughter.
