btw where you expecting an epic, heroic speech or something? Doesnt seem very expectable from a saint dying in a bed. The kind of words a man "blinded by religion" would say. Not your favorite, i suppose.

King St.Louie IX was a real person, unlike Frodo. By rejecting your Creator, you deny the obvious. Depending on what you believe in determines how you act.
All atheists hate God and don't want there to be a God because they love sin.
Ecclesiasticus 1:32 "But the worship of God is an abomination to a sinner."
That's why atheist Professor of Philosophy and Law Thomas Nagel says:
"I speak from experience, being strongly subject to this fear myself: I want atheism to be true and am made uneasy by the fact that some of the most intelligent and well-informed people I know are religious believers. It isn’t just that I don’t believe in God and, naturally, hope that I’m right in my belief. It’s that I hope there is no God! I don’t want there to be a God; I don’t want the universe to be like that." [The Last Word, pp. 130-131]
Ecclesiasticus 10:14-15 "The beginning of the pride of man, is to fall off from God: Because his heart is departed from him that made him: for pride is the beginning of all sin: he that holdeth it, shall be filled with maledictions, and it shall ruin him in the end."

      Worth knowing:
through the prayers of Saints Louis IX and Charlemagne, Joan of Arc was given to France by Almighty God.
If you read the biography of Louis, you will learn of an error in his excessive generosity that caused such grief to France from England- which would require the Holy young Joan to help undo, 2 centuries later!!
In a biography of St Joan, she herself testified of the prayers of the 2 holy kings that brought her to her mission on earth.

It is funny, this great man was fighting against wicked times just like we are today. King Louis IX was completely contemporary with our predicament in that respect. You do the best that you can employing the station you are granted, but whether it was 800 years ago or today, we still encounter the same basic problems regardless of how sophisticated our political and religious views have become. In this respect you could have taken King Louis out of a time capsule, and he was a perfectly modern man.

PsychBanzer, the crusaders did not suffer and die in distant lands just so you can rock and roll. They did so that Christianity in Europe can be preserved. The survival of Christianity goes beyond the superficial life of this world. Just like their Savior, Christ who went through His passion and death to save mankind from sin and gain for us our redemption; those crusaders went through their own "cruxifiction and death" so that others may be spiritually saved.

I find it interesting that, even then, not all priests were considered perfect. If they had been, he would have not instructed his son to be very careful in choosing a confessor. Yet, this does not diminish his thoughts on whether or not the Church is holy or not. I find that especially poignant and important in this day and age.

He sure had alot to say for a guy whom was dying of the plague.
Louis IX, King of France between 1226 and 1270 and subsequently canonized as a Saint, turned to his daughter on his death bed at Tunis and implored:
I will enter now the house of the Lord. My dear daughter, I conjure you to love our Lord with all your might, for this is the foundation of all goodness. I wish you could comprehend what the Son of God has done for our redemption. Never be guilty of any deliberate sin, though it were to save your life. Shun too familiar discourse except with virtuous persons. Obey, my dear daughter, your husband. Aspire after a disposition to do the will of God, purely for His sake, independently of the hope of reward or fear of punishment.
    Tous les temps en temps

His sickness lasted several days, there were plenty of time to give these words, as well as giving some last words to his daughter and others.
And I seem to recall that his very last words were neither to his son nor his daughter but that of him commending his spirit to God in latin and finally uttering "Jerusalem, Jerusalem!"

What you say is true, & it tells of a rare Christain sincerity in this king, and a great trust that God will save the just. I suspect that most rulers would have prefered to hold on to what increased their apparent earthly strength, because, to quote Machiavelli, they would have thought it better to be feared than loved, since men love at THEIR convenience, but fear at the convenience of the prince.

Thanks to research I found out that I am a direct descendant of Louis IX. In fact I am a direct descendant of 10 different French kings from Robert I to Louis IX. I descend from Louis IX son, Robert of Clermont, who suffered a head injury during a joust. After him I no longer come from any kings but many Princes, princesses, and Dukes as well as many other men of noble positions, until Princess Margaret DeBourbone DeConde migrated to America and married Thomas DeVane..... any way here I am several several generations later living in Meridian, Mississippi coaching high school football lol Awesome to know I came from such a Christian man!

Thank you for rightly quoting the last WRITTEN words
of good St Louis of Poissy: in his letter to his son.
However, the last SPOKEN words of St Louis IX, TOR,
    were:
"Jerusalem, Jerusalem!! Let us ascend hither!"
As Louis lay dying in Tunisia,
the Blessed Lord Jesus appeared to him from the Heavenly Jerusalem above.
    This too
was recounted in the biography of St Louis by his Seneshal,
    Jean de Joinville.
Biography of St Louis still available in several different English Translations
together with an account of a prior crusade:
Chronicles of the Crusades/ Life of St Louis

I thought at points he was too trusting of the Chuch, as at 1:29 "choose for confessor a wise & upright man who knows how to teach you what you ought & what you ought not to do." See also 5:32 et seq. About 4:25, did he think all historical acquisitions of the kingdom of France just, or that all just rival claimnants were dead? He was lucky not to be another Henry VI. He said 0:55 that adversity is deserved & from GOD, but at 5:10 advises a NATURAL remedy for keeping men in fear & submission.
