I think that the Middle Ages warned more against showing excessive emotion exactly because people were generally more open about their emotions. Not long before Louis's time one reads of Henry II of England falling onto the floor and chewing at the rushes (though I personally believe that the demonstrative fury of the Plantagenets, like that of Napoleon after them, was to an extent a controlled fury, used as what we would call a "negotiating technique"). One thinks of Charlemagne and his knights, fainting away by the thousands, tearing their beards and weeping at the disaster of Ronceveaux in the Chanson de Roland. That, of course, is epic grief, suitable to the larger-than-life nature of the epic, but I think it reflects a certain real-life aspect of the middle ages, the aspect that did not have the modern world's craven fear of melodrama and that felt it natural to express itself openly in action.
One of my favorite videos of yours. It's refreshing to see the more relatable, human side of the crusaders simply because the serious and spiritual nature of the Crusades that give the crusaders this almost mythical stature in my eyes, so it's cool to see the personality of some of these men.
few days ago a channel that did medevial weapon thegnthrand was terminated by youtube for no reason at all i hope they dont do that to other good and accurate historical channels like you
Could you do a video about the stories of crusaders sacking Jerusalem and other cities? I personally don't believe them, but I can't seem to find anything that says otherwise. I can't see them doing that, why would they cross the Mediterranean to save their fellow Christian brothers and sisters just to slaughter them?
The Crusaders did sack Jerusalem when they captured it in 1099, but they killed Jews and Mohammedans when they did it. There were no Christians in Jerusalem, the Christians were driven out of Jerusalem by the Fatimid governor Iftikhar before the Crusaders arrived. The local Christians actually joined the Crusaders in their camp while they were besieging Jerusalem in 1099, and then joined them in capturing the city.
I think it would have been for Louis that his mum died because he was in the holy land. For sure god would be in his graces. Would have been tragic I imagine
The prankster must be one of my ancestors.
P.s I love this channel. We need to hear these stories about our people
That comment to St. Louis IX about that sage advice comes from Louis' life lessons given to his kids.
Jean was quoting Louis back to himself.
