Yes! Thank you, I'll add a clarification in the description. I guess some people may question why it was published in haste and then retracted, either way it's good that corrections are made. We'll have to wait for further evidence, but either way as I mention in the video it certainly won't be a wonder treatment, at best it will be an adjunct.

    • @pneumarian
      @pneumarian 4 года назад +14

hydroxychloroquine was hypothesized to be a good *prophylactic* & it was tested as an acute treatment, where it was already known that it would be a bad choice due to established contraindications. So, what I make of it is that the authors got shamed into withdrawing a depravedly missrun study.

Among the most fair, sane discussions I've seen about the underlying truths we face: the world isn't safe, we need an economy and we must minimise the covid risk. Also beautifully humble - every aspect of your thoughts are anchored in maximum care for all. We're lucky to have you and your colleagues. It's little wonder we're truly very proud of you. Very easy to say when it's not our loved ones. 'The economy' is structured by people, not some god we need to appease. These are political choices, and political choices will always fail those lives devalued by the dominant ideology: older people, disabled people, people of colour.

Honestly this is the problem with our system as it is. Politics and the government leaders are who we turn to no matter the situation. This pandemic calls for medical experts to properly handle it. No government leader should pretend to know more than doctors about a virus. They should be throwing their support behind the doctors who can then do their jobs better. Instead what we have are politicians using antagonistic speeches to point fingers at each other as if the virus issue was the same as a socioeconomic issue. Enough of that going around and then you've got people blaming 5G for it as well.
So no Sonia should not be in politics. Politicians should be backing her and Dr. Hope and all the rest instead of going about their regular slandering business.

In the US (Wisconsin here)the effects are disjointed. Some people are incredibly effected in that they are losing homes, jobs and loved ones. Some people are concerned, taking it seriously but haven't seen the reality yet and way too many people are being too cavalier about it and endangering the rest. It's scary and frustrating. It's incredibly draining on people's mental health and it's so hard treating mental illness while this is going on.

Thanks for this episode. Really high value information and insights enriched with your personal evaluation - obviously unbiased and not following any agenda. That's what I often miss when looking on the things that we've been presented by media on a daily basis.
I really appreciate the way how you highlight different aspects how Covid-19 affected us and might affect us in future without starting to rate or prioritize them. You are describing the impact of Covid-19 in a very general way, although you personally were heavily involved in a small section. Many Politicians (who should actually be the generalists) don't manage to do this when I see them referring about individual numbers or partial aspects while justifying decisions or measures put in place.
I can say that here in Germany it's not so much different from UK except that our government took resolute measures some weeks earlier than yours, which resulted in significantly lower rates of infection. The actual situation is more or less the same: Where unity in politics and society at an early stage made us able to act surprisingly effective, all this is falling apart now and everyone seems to follow their own agenda again - sometimes even more offensive and less tolerant to arguments and other opinions than before. I have the feeling that about at least 20-30% of the people here don't (want to) see the real threat of the corona virus. They start to fight against the government and the measures that protected us from getting us in heavier trouble. I fear that at one point, politicians will take into account / accept / need a heavier second wave to justify their actions. In this case, the whole society and especially medical and caring staff will pay the highest price. This worries me a bit.
And you complement each other totally well, which gives the format extra value. Keep going on!

Thanks Ed and Sonia for a great chat. Think we’re all feeling a bit fatigued at the moment, I’ve really appreciate being able to see friends outside these last few weeks, and I think we’ve needed it to keep morale up for the marathon fight this is, but fingers crossed the second wave won’t be as bad as the first despite the easing of lockdown.
Most of my family lives in Sweden, where they’ve not had nearly as strict rules as the UK and I don’t really agree with their approach, but at least they’ve admitted in the last week that they got part of their strategy wrong, and I agree with what you guys said, it would be nice if the gov could do the same here. Who knows what the right approach is, we probably won’t know for years, but at least own up to your shortcomings.

    • @MosterBecca

Swede Potato Pie no one in Sweden has admitted they got it all wrong. No one knows what the right approach will have been until this is over, we just have to wait and see, but Tegnell did speak about how perhaps Sweden could have done things slightly differently in an Ekot interview this week that got a bit of traction. As much as I don’t agree with the ‘godly’ status given to Tegnell by the Swedish media, at least it’s refreshing to hear him share some nuances to the Swedish approach that I think has been lacking in media. Whereas here in the uk, we’ve had absolutely non of that, and there’s been plenty of things that the uk gov got wrong too.

Thanks for another great, informative vlog. I always enjoy when Dr Sonia guests. I think you both explain things so well, so clamly and so reasonably. I've been sharing your COVID-19 vlogs with friends & family to help them understand what's going on. I'm an AHP in the UK and have been trying to rehab severely physically & cognitively impaired patients after stroke & other brain injuries throughout it all as that's something that can't be cancelled, and I agree with Dr Sonia, I am exhausted. I feel like I've been working at maximum capacity with increased pressures to move people out of the hospital environment and with 2 ward moves within 2 months (staff, patients & equipment) to different hospital sites added into the mix. Now that things in the hospital are starting to reopen we have to keep pushing forwards and are now getting more pressure piled on us to increase our productivity as we need things to be 'business as usual'. I feel like I'm climbing a mountain and I'm only part way up but my food and water are running out and won't last me to the summit. I am lucky to work with an amazing AHP team who muck in and support each other. It keeps me going and turning up to work every day. Thank you for your honest reflections about this. Luckily someone takes the courage to be honest but not discomforting. Safer not safe should be the key word. Two or more future virus waves. Endemic vs pandemic. Interconnection between Economy and welfare system. New Fears and depression. Need of planning ahead. I totally agree with you. We should bear in mind what has happened and still is going on. The virus is still out there but won't win if we show our responsible behaviour as humans not as instinctual beings. Take care 🇮🇹🍀🇬🇧

Then again, I don't understand why people in Britain are still so supportive of their government. Everyone is now talking about the protesters and their potential to spark a second wave. Why aren't people angrier about the fact that so many in positions of power didn't even obey the first lockdown, when others obeyed the rules and missed out on times with dying relatives? I don't think these people deserve that support and understanding.

And Canada too. Everyone who lost their job due to CoVid receives a cheque for $2,000 a month, they just have to apply for it. I assume a lot of people are cheating but the government did get millions of cheques out almost overnight. Since they used people's Social Insurance Number, the cheaters will be found at tax time.

I think that might be a bit different.
I can't speak for the British or New Zealand systems, but what you're describing sounds more like Australia's JobSeeker system, rather than our JobKeeper system.
JobSeeker is for anyone who has lost their job and it currently pays around AU$1100 per fortnight. There is an expectation that people on this will be actively looking for new job, but the strict requirement to do so was temporarily suspended.
JobKeeper is paid to almost any business that has lost at least 30% of their revenue, at a rate of AU$1500 per employee per fortnight, with the requirement that it is entirely passed onto those employees (minus income tax, as required). Through this, the businesses are keeping the employees on the books, when they otherwise might have been fired or the business might have shut down entirely.

I assume, as a Dr, you have now been tested for Covid (I guess several times) and maybe had the antibody test? Could you make a video discussing the antibody testing and it’s findings as I’ve been reading lots about how there may be other immune processes at work which mean an antibody isn’t always created? I might have totally misunderstood but from watching your Cells at Work videos, it could make sense..... could you explain more? Thanks 🙂

For my sister, who has just started chemotherapy this is worrying and for anyone else going through treatments. She needs the district nurse and cancer support. We as a family have a gene that means we develop polyps in the colon. So need regular scans to check for and remove them. I’m worried that these scans will stop but also concerned that the risk having them will be increased as they already carry a risk. It’s going to be a different health service that’s for sure. Somewhere you felt safe now feels dangerous. We are sticking to lockdown for the time being, no road trips for us. Thanks for your honesty once again. I think after the Covid briefing it should be followed by your updates. Making it far more real for the layman. 🌈👏🏻👏🏻

Sensible discussion, yes we need to somehow get other services in the NHS moving again. Couldn't the field hospitals be used for Covid pts and free up main hospitals? But I suppose it also boils down to having the staff. No easy answer.

It’s very helpful to have the practitioner’s perspective.
I work in in vitro diagnostics in rt PCR as well as next gen sequencing. So also have this lower level perspective. Not practitioner, but more testing.
What strikes me is at the macro level, there’s massive failure: the politicization of the WHO’s decision making, the disgraceful state of affairs of some of the more ‘reputable’ journals/publications, the fact that for various reasons we still do not know the origin of this virus, the increasing isolation of China...Given all this, it seems to me we should all be asking not only how are we to deal with the current pandemic but what are we doing to prepare for the next one?
