I’ve talked with biologist at a usgs center and they said that Michigan doesn't regulate for the herd they regulate for the money and hunters. It’s always about the money.
I’ve hunted deer in Montmorency County for over fifty years, this area has been under T.B. Management for over twenty years. The quality of the deer herd has steadily declined, and the methods used to combat bovine tuberculosis has remained the same, with no noticeable improvement. Doing the same things over and over, and expecting different outcomes is the problem. The introduction of predatory wildlife to manage deer populations, has been the plan from the beginning, to phase out the deer hunters.
I agree. Bring back baiting if does are out of control. CWD isn’t a problem. Plus what if I want to take my 4yr old nephew out to have first crack at the buck I’ve been feeding and watching all summer. Kidding on the last one. I have night vision
I have said this before. Look at Kansas. I have hunted there. It’s nothing short of amazing. EVERYONE must draw a buck tag. ONE TAG. Does are over the counter. As many as you want. Their management is spot on. Michigan COULD have the same resource. COULD HAVE. But.
Kansas was a bit of a pain...in my years there(2000-03). Had to send in an application...and your buck tag (if you got it), was only good for your choice of season, be it traditional black powder, bow, or rifle season. Application also for doe tags (2), and you could only get an additional 2 doe tags, from the county clerk. I will say...I always went out with high hopes of at least seeing a big buck, and I saw a LOT! Back home, in MI....I go out with zero-little expectation of even seeing a deer, let alone even a small buck. Side note: My Uncle was head of Kansas Fish & Game, for a number of years. He was instrumental in the first few seasons when deer hunting was made legal again.
"HUNTERMAN"😂 ain't ever heard that one before. Sounds like something someone who hunts once a year for Facebook pictures would say lmao. Neat part about the bridge tho🤟

Another big problem I believe mi has is that too many ppl hunt for the grip and grin and story. Put the meat in the freezer then throw most of it away come following deer season. Ppl that don’t eat venison aren’t gonna shoot does.
LOL...I bet if you ask the hunters in the U.P. they won't say the problem is habitat and weather!!! I've listened to the DMI, DNR, and now the NRC version of this deer management initiative and it's not adding up. DMI and DNR were saying the same thing, now NRC kind of saying something else.
@@Joe-xm3fm DNR doesn't set the policy though. They can only enforce what rules and regulations the NRC puts in place. Let’s face it MI isn’t going to solve the problem anytime soon. If they were serious they’d be doing deer collar studies and listening to the people that are in the woods more than them. They don’t even listen to their own field biologists.
If you knew what you were doing you would realize that Michigan is a laughing stock. Of hunting anymore. You guys are driving it right of the state I live in Monroe County in the lower. It's hard to find a rabbit anymore. That's that's why nobody buys a small game license. You had to combine it with hunting license to try to gouge your wallet. Because there's nothing to shoot at anymore because of mismanagement.
Right out of the gate the commissioner gave false information. The DNR can make recommendations as to what policies are implemented but they in no way have an actual vote. The commissioners statement saying they share responsibility with the DNR for setting regulations for deer/hunting is not accurate. The DNR has no seat on the commission. The DNR cannot set any policy in terms of rules and regulations for hunting/fishing/trapping. They are an enforcement agency that also has a team of biologists. The commission needs to own up to it's decisions and not pass or try and share the blame on an agency that flat out told them what they wanted to do and the NRC said no. That should tell everyone right there that the NRC commission or at least several members of it don't actually care what the DNR recommends and are just using the. As a scapegoat to shift blame off of them
What a waste of time talking to Tom Baird a lot of BS. He even admits the liberty hunt with only approximately 6000 deer harvested in 2023 is not going to adjust the population. In other words its discriminating against both the youth and disabled hunters participating in the Liberty hunt. Now lets take a closer look at the late January hunt for antlerless deer. Antlerless is deer with less than 3 inches of antlers, it is not just does that get harvested. With bucks dropping their antlers and button bucks you are looking at up to 30% males that are taken at that time of year. Another issue is majority of does will be carrying bucks which will not be born do to being harvested. I think a much better solution is offer 5 dollar tags during the regular season if they truly are trying to concentrate on more antlerless deer being harvested. More importantly the opportunity to remove antlerless deer without askewing the buck population. The point im trying to emphasize is remove the does but not destroying young bucks but actually help in herd management with a better buck to doe ratio.
Well folks...the DNR is government! "We need more deer taken"....."let's keep the bait ban going, even though every deer in any given area lick the same branches and browse the same vegetation"...."oh yeah, let's raise the price of tags too!!!"...."...and change more rules"... DERP.

It's so sad only wealthy people can go deer hunting anymore and that's just the way the chiefs want it so nobody's shooting there deer they've been scouting because no one can afford to go hunting.
I dont agree with the doe only for the youth an liberty hunts, im sorry but they deserve the opportunity to shoot buck or doe. I also dont agree with them saying as a whole there is an over population in the Lp. My area does not have an over population, ill see 6-10 deer a sit. The ratio is about 2d/1b. You want to get people yo get back into hunting? Lower the tag prices, get rid of the base license requirement.
Who reaps the profits from clear cutting 1,000s of acres of state game areas in Michigan? Some state game areas look like waste lands with stacked logs 4 stories high and a mile long. I'm a U.P. hunter and I say hunters are the problem. Many of today's hunters focus too much on the kill. They lack restraint and care more about their own desires for meat in the freezer and horns on the wall than the health of the herd. Every year hunters kill a huge percentage of the yearling bucks in Michigan, then they gripe because there aren't any mature bucks in the herd the next year. It's simple. If we want better hunting, we need to be less selfish, exercise more restraint, and be patient.
Not necessarily, younger bucks have been found to breed more, if you want to decrease the population in the south then more 1-2 year olds need to be taken
