      The long haul is essential when we're talking about who the all time great is. Ohtani may well be the GOAT once the career is finished circa 2035, but that remains to be seen.

    • @dabz3432
      @dabz3432 Месяц назад

      @@nickthomas6827 I get the logic of looking at the entire arc of a career, but on the other hand, if there comes an athlete that surpasses all others that have come before by achieving a feat once thought impossible, then do we withhold our decision of who is the greatest until their career is over? Let's look at sprinters for example. At the 100m contest, Bolt became the GOAT when he ran 9.58. End of story. No rational person would propose we should all wait to see what else he accomplishes before coming to a decision. Same is true in many other forms of sport that is not purely time/speed based. Now, baseball is artfully more dynamic and the performances of each athlete is challenging to decode. Add to the mix that it is a team sport and arriving at a consensus about who is the GOAT will rely upon smarter folks than me.
      However, if one of baseball's most coveted statistic was the 40/40 club, how significant should be weigh the achievement of a player that achieves 50+/50+? Statistically, this is in another league. Even novices like me know that there are so many interesting and valid ways to dimensionalize a player's talents/achievements, but if hitting and running are critical foundational skills that define a player's caliber, then what Ohtani did in 2024 should already catapult him to the top of many lists.
      If that is not convincing enough, Ohtani has the potential to win the Cy Young. Clemens, I believe, has the most, but just even being a contender while hitting bombs and stealing bases is just unheard of. There have been so many great athletes in baseball. One of my favorites was Bo Jackson. Wow, he had presence and everyone could just see that he was special -- because he did things that were spectacular. If Bo remained healthy and went on to have a storied career by becoming a member of the 40/40 and contending for the Cy Young, then I may just have to change my vote. But I can't, because there is an athlete that has done it for real. Ohtani already stands above everyone else. Show me another player with similar stats in all three dimensions -- hitting, stealing and pitching. How can any reasonable person assert a valid comparison with someone that does not have credible stats in all three dimensions like Ohtani?

    WS titles is a team measure not a single players (goat) accomplishment.
    An elite pitcher takes a season off to nurse an injury and casually destroys elite hitters records...
    Even with Judge and Bonds pitchers have the option to walk them. They CAN'T do that with Shohei because he will steal and get into scoring position for Mookie and Freddie. Its literally lose/lose for opponents.
    Then you have Shohei striking out 2022 Houston Astros on the mound and hitting bombs against them at the plate. He did it again in 2023 against the Texas Rangers. Essentially beating them single handedly. Both WS champions of those seasons. Who tf else is the history of the sport comes close?

You are right it doesn't change his bat to ball skills, but it did help him get so big and strong where fly outs turned into HRs, and also recover from fatigue or injury faster and he was able to perform at MVP levels into his older years where normally there is a performance decline and therefore he may not have reached the total HRs record.

The reason Ohtani signed with the Angels is because they were the only team that was willing to give him an opportunity to be both a pitcher and a DH. Ohtani had to sign with the Angels in order to get the chance to prove to the league that he’s elite at both positions. Say what you want, but the Angels did a lot to help him grow as both a pitcher and a hitter.

    Isn't integrity a key part of the GOAT equation? It’s not just about how you play, but how you go about playing the game. If you agree with that, how can someone who knowingly took an unfair competitive advantage even be considered in the GOAT conversation?
    I believe the GOAT debate is separate from the Hall of Fame discussion. There are plenty of Hall of Famers, some of whom may have cheated. But to be called the GOAT, that title should be reserved for the absolute greatest, and in my view, integrity and respect for the game are essential to that greatness. Being the greatest isn't just about having the most talent or the best results. It's about achieving the most while upholding the principles that best represent the sport.

    When the Dodgers win the WS (I'm sure Ohtani will be a huge part of it), then you can rightfully call him the GOAT. For now, an alien-like athlete with otherworldly talent and abilities. We need more performances from him like the 40/40 grand slam, and last night where he pretty much carried the team to the W. Do that in the post-season, get Dodgers the chip, then GOAT without question. Those that say post-season stats don't matter, you're out of your mind. Would Jordan be Jordan without his 6 rings? Just think nice and hard about that.

    And risked and bought his rookie card already graded the first year he started smacking homers. People also pitch around Ohtani a lot, the steroids definitely helped Bonds put power on his swing. Skip never clearly played baseball. There’s a reason 145lb guys aren’t leading for homeruns ever. When I gained weight from lifting, the ball would go further when I got a good swing on the ball. Just admit you hate having a Japanese player the face of baseball. People like Colin admitted it at least
