My high school band is playing this song for our spring concert! This is definitely one of the most exciting pieces we have ever done! I could listen to this music all day on my mp3...sounds like a plan. :D Oh how I love the trombone gliss at 6:38!
I played flute for this in my first year of college and I remember sight reading this, and playing the wrong note loudly every single time for the octave split. Completely confident as I did it xD
Although it's been 15 years, I remember playing this and I was 1st Chair Euphonium. I always said on this piece when in doubt play higher and in case you weren't playing insanely high before kick it up a notch!!! We got straight 1s at competition for this!!
pedal tones for trombones then back up to mid F.......yaaaaaay lol. seriously though, its an awesome. I love the menacing bit in the middle, makes me feel like a matador or something.
We played this in PA Regional Band in my senior year. There were four regions in the state, and the conductor of choice was Dr. James Dunlop of the Penn State Blue Band. He was a great educator, but he had no tolerance for musicians not knowing where they were in the score. I was first chair cornet and in Saturday morning rehearsal, when the band got to the trio at 3:00, I was mesmerized. The musicians were so good and the music was so beautiful that when Dr. Dunlop pointed to me at 3:35, I was staring at him, but my horn was on my lap. By 3:36 I was sure I was a goner. But he said, " Normally, I'd chew you out for something like that. But two weeks ago, at another Regional Band, the first chair did the exact same thing."
I played this in my high school concert band in my grade 10 year, and as a clarinet player, I loved it. I ended up playing it again as a bass clarinet in grade 12 and still loved it.
I knew Clifton Williams and attended school in Miami, Fla with his children. He was a wonderful man and wrote many songs for our school including our Alma Mater. He wrote the Killian Concert March (named for our school) It was a beautiful piece. I especially loved Symphonic Dance #3. As I recall he directed us in this piece as guest conductor during one of our spring concerts. He was an amazing man. Such a loss to the music world the day he passed. This is a fantastic performance!
I was in a mood for band music today and came across this recording, saw your comment at the top of the list. I played in several ensembles with Sarah Williams (French Horn) and remember riding to a concert with Sarah, her Dad was driving us there. I played in a couple of ensembles conducted by Clifton Williams, and also enjoyed playing his compositions. He was a pleasure to know and to play under his direction. As I recall he was always kind, enthusiastic, and encouraging. I see you went to Killian, was Dane Wills still the band director when you were there? (he was the first band director when Killian High opened)
@@herbvanderven5154 Yes - Dane Wills was my band director and remained a Killian several years after I left. I am not sure when he died, but his wife, Vicki was living in Georgia where she passed away several years ago. I graduated in the class of 73 with Clifton's daughter and Floutist, Helen Williams.
As an aside - this piece is an outstanding test of a student director - a task I enjoyed and excelled in back in school. The time changes and thematic differences in this music make it a challenge to direct.
@@RandyAllen702 So pleased to get your reply! It had been so long since you posted your comment I didn't know if you would still get a notification of my comment. I knew Dane and Vicki through the years that I was playing in the brass band at the Salvation Army Miami Citadel church, which is where I got my first instruction on playing trombone. When Killian first opened Dane invited me over to play with the Killian band, I think it was during a summer pre-season practice. Did you pursue music after high school?
I was lucky enough to know Clifton Williams. I went on his Young American Musicians Abroad trip to Central Europe. It was the greatest experience of my life. 17 days in Paris, Switzerland Germany, Lichenstein, Austria. We even went over night on the Orient Express from Paris to Neuchatel Switzerland. I was an Assistant Director on the trip and played Alto Sax Never Ever forget. William C.Miller was my Director who introduced me to Williams. Just amazing and he was the nicest person ever. Really cared about kids. Thanks for playing this. Brought back memories of my high school. My Director studied with Williams so of course we played all of his pieces.
wow does this bring back all sorts of fond memories!! All-County in 2005 in Suffolk county!!!! geez our conductor was really short!! haha this is my favorite symphonic band piece of all time!!!
I knew Clifton Williams the composer of this piece. His daughter was a classmate of mine and he wrote our High School Alma Mater as well as Killian a full length concert piece named for our school. He was an amazing musician and his compositions are still favorites. We played many of his tunes and he was our Guest Conductor for several of our concerts. I graduated in 1973 from Miami Killian Senior High and only 3 years later Clifton Williams passed away.
This song is so cool. My favorite part is the peasante e rubato part where the French horn blare and just blast. Being a French horn player....Oh my gosh....the first time I had to play that my throat and lips hurt so bad. Blasting is not easy. I can play it much better now but that whole blasting thing is no joke. Even the trumpet players were suffering too. I'm also a trumpet player so that wasn't a joke either. In the end it was all worth it. I played the third horn part by the way but I'm more of a first and second horn type.
In my town we have a separate school for freshman and the fresh men are playing this and the symphony band at the hs can't play it yet =D it's great fun TENOR SAX ALL THE WAY!!
I'm a junior. For my sophomore year tour we played Slava, Fanfare and Allegro, and Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral. This year we have Gallant Seventh, Blue Shades, Holtz's First Suite in Eb, this song, and William Byrd's Ear;e of Oxford's Marche. I can agree it certainly is stressful.
Hehe played this last year in my Highschool Concert Band :D I LOVE this piece, its so amazing. 1st clarinet is intimidating once you first look at it but its so amazing when you get it down :)
horns amazing! played this for my 9th grade mpa last year and it was amazing! our brass section was bigger than the other half of the band so yeah! go trombones! this song givchills!! AMAZING! i play clarinet...2nd and iwas deaf after the performance...
I begged for 3 years to get a cool euphonium part. My band director handed this out and smirked at me. It was funny what he did but also like "you ass"
woodwinds!! lol! i loved playin this on sax in high school! i always loved the flute part on the slow section of the song @3:00. so pretty. the whole song is off tha chain
quincy hilliard is at my school and he let us listen to a 7th and 8th band play this beautifully.... my band director has this so we may sight read it soon. the clarinet part sounds so fun
I'm in 8th grade, and I'm playing this for my Judication. Extremely nerve racking, but I LOVE playing it! We had a choice between Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral and this, I'm sad we can't do Elsa's, but I like this too.
+Miss Edits and Montages In my opinion Elsa's procession is quite boring so when Mr. Sindler told us to write down our thoughts I said it didn't seem fun to play
(3:37) I played flute for this, and trilling for like 100 measures was definitely the highlight of my day lol
Carly Perez Oh yeah! XD My friends complained about that so much.
Carly Perez 23 measures of trilling on Bb
LOL yeah I don't miss that part.
Doing a roll on marimba the ENTIRE time lol
Blaze Goodman same my forearm hurts

jsMagic190 _Clearly I have but this is just one of my favorite._
jsMagic190 Why do you have to spread negativity? This is a really good piece, and the challenge makes it fun to play.
jsMagic190 lol u liked your own comment
My high school band is playing this song for our spring concert! This is definitely one of the most exciting pieces we have ever done! I could listen to this music all day on my mp3...sounds like a plan. :D Oh how I love the trombone gliss at 6:38!
Playing 1st trombone on this piece was the highlight of high school band.
Played this song back in high school and it was my favorite piece ever!!
how is it possible for a song to be this epic
Won the Gateway Concert band Music Festival in 1988 with this piece. ( and with El Capitan).. Love this piece!
I played flute for this in my first year of college and I remember sight reading this, and playing the wrong note loudly every single time for the octave split. Completely confident as I did it xD

Connor Roe do u have any tips on going from the pedal b flat to f?
Connor Roe that's the best part

played this last year on clarinet. was my favorite song we ever played. very fun
My Symphonic Band is playing this for the Band Festival. I play 1st Trumpet and the high notes are brutal
Brandon Cain Yeah, I'm in 8th grade with some friends playing first, I play second.
3:34 is what my band called "The Bullfight"
+Steven Shipman We got this piece today and that's what my band director called it
Same here
My band director also called it that xD
+Steven Shipman "The Matador Section," he said
That part is 22 measures of trilling on the same note for me :/
日本人でこれ見てる人👍
はーい
Not Japanese but I am watching this.
5/4 will officially be the death of me. BUT IT'S SOOOOOO FUN.
crazeechickee11 i know right
This song is the best. I remember playing the trumpet solos my freshman year of high school.
I played this in my high school concert band in my grade 10 year, and as a clarinet player, I loved it. I ended up playing it again as a bass clarinet in grade 12 and still loved it.
Epic song! Euphonium part is sooo much fun!
3:34-4:34 doesnt sound like a fiesta and it sounds more like a tyrannt or a fleet of evil soldiers marching
It's most commonly known as the Matador or Bullfight sections
Bull fight
Sounds like a Bull fight to me
"your going to hear a bull fight, and your going to hear the bull win"
Fav song of all time.
we're playing this piece this year at our middle school, so excited have listened to it like 20 times this past few hours
Omg Perla cantu!!!
+Andrew Salmeron omg Andrew salmeron!!
Lmao +Eric Arredondo
+Andrew Salmeron I can't even
+Perla Cantu Good job xD. Our band is the bomb diggity. Every other band beware!
We're playing this in all county and I can't even express how much I love the "Bullfight" section.

wow does this bring back all sorts of fond memories!! All-County in 2005 in Suffolk county!!!! geez our conductor was really short!! haha this is my favorite symphonic band piece of all time!!!
I play clarinet and I absolutely love this song. I'm in my freshman year of high school and we are playing it for one of our concerts.
Jackie Taylor same
I have never heard trumpet tone like that in my life, and yes it's a compliment!
My band is playing this at the University of Alabama on the first of February. This is my favorite piece lol
Eb Contra alto clarinet player here 👍🏻 love this piece
Our Symphonic Band in school is playing this piece, and we're in High School. I'm one of six lucky Freshman to have made the higher band. c:
Wow, I remember playing this years ago in high school... Brings back memories
We played this last year at university. I love playing the raunchy trombone feature at the end. :)
What I wouldn't give to be in high school and play this song again...
We did one in High School in 1971 in Illinois, I played the claves...!!
I have this piece as a part of my high school wind ensemble band assessment and I'm playing aux percussion
That is just the most BADASS sounding intro ever. I wish that played every time I entered a room unannounced
I knew Clifton Williams the composer of this piece. His daughter was a classmate of mine and he wrote our High School Alma Mater as well as Killian a full length concert piece named for our school. Oboe player here..and this was robably my favorite contest piece I played in high school.
Even though I'm an alto sax player, I love the part at 2:57.
Truly an amazing piece. I play Tuba, and we took this song to State. Got straight ones.
I loved playing contrabass clarinet on this
Doge from San Antonio same here I play Contraalto clarinet!! Do you play Contrabass or Contralto?
Contrabass
reading the comments is interesting, lol. my band is learning this song and I play euphonium. it's a really fun song, just a bit difficult.
This is the most impracticle joke I've ever seen. This composer wants the baritones and euohies to fuckin suffer, istg.
imma sax player but my FAVorite part: trombone glissando at the end. That was sooo raw!!!
We played this my freshman year and I’m a senior now. Gahhh I miss it 😭
this is still my favorite piece I've ever played
We played this last year for large ensemble!!! Haven't heard it since then...ahh, brings back memories :)
This song is so cool. My favorite part is the peasante e rubato part where the French horn blare and just blast. I'm a freshman in high school and I have to play this, with many other college level pieces such as Slava, for an international band tour o-o
Cory Hollinger
Yeah. Very stressful trying to prepare for it though ;-; And raising the money.

Oh, this song just makes me so, so happy.
Love playing the trumpet solo
By far the best version on youtube, bravo, especially for a high school group!
Is it weird that 13 years later this is basically still true?
woodwinds!! lol! i loved playin this on sax in high school! i always loved the flute part on the slow section of the song @3:00. so pretty. the whole song is off tha chain

My band is playing this and Cloudburst for our spring concert. Should be fun.
Epic. No other word for it.
Festival of Winds Opus 37! Learned this in a weekend! Yeeeeehhh
