  • In this video I show the step-by-step process for replacing the front suspension upper and lower ball joints on year models 2000-2003 Dodge Dakota and Dodge Durango vehicles. The subject vehicle is a 2002 Dodge Dakota 4X4. Watch this video for helpful information about using quality parts, tools needed and safe practice for getting the job done right. As with any steering and suspension system service, repairs should only be carried out by qualified individuals and the repair manual should be closely followed along with every standard of safe working practices to prevent injury or loss of life. over 235,000 on my Durango and it is still going, engine wise it is great and smooth as butter, its just all the little shit that I have to keep replacing and fixing. At least I have never had a major issue. I have been able to do everything myself. No engine or trans issues other than the occasional leak. Pretty dependable to get you where you need to go overall if you can handle constant issues with little stuff like power windows, fog light switches melting out, etc. 1999 Durango. The truck has only broke down on me once but I was able to limp it home, was the computer going out, ordered a replacement for $200 and installed in minutes and no problem since. I am looking to get rid of it after the summer for only one reason, Our fuel prices. I have to get a hippie car now. During Trucking season I commute in the summer to and from work and spend about $175 a week just in fuel to and from the work site. Gonna miss it. I grew up in Kenai, I dream of moving back up there soon. This weekend I am doing the ball joints and tie rod inner/outer on both sides. Thanks for the step by step video. Especially giving the info on Torque specs! I am assuming they should be the same for my durango.

Amazing video, in depth and in detail. We all thank you for providing us with this information. By the way, why in the hell do the rivet the upper bJ from factory. Literally just makes it more of a pain in the ass. However, when yours is bolted, it's a breeze to only have to press on bJ per side. Thanks again!

  • @GhostLake

My OEM lower ball joints have a bent over metal flange instead of clip like the aftermarket ones have. I couldn't tell from the video if the lower ball joint you removed had the bent over metal flange. If so, did it just bend up as you drove it out with the ball joint press? Good video BTW.

I like to warm up by doing the other side first and I have to say this side went much smoother. I was trying to use the wrong press adaptor on the old lower and it wouldn’t budge. I looked like I knew what I was doing on this side. Haha.

Was able to do driver side upper ball joint with minimal teardown, aside from taking the tire off. Pass side is fighting me every way possible. I was not aware how much you had to remove to make it easy as possible. I'm sure not the only one who has frustratingly cussed out engineers

Thanks for the video, I followed your steps and completed this on my Durango. Went ahead and replaced the Inner and outer tierod ends while I had everything opened up. Came out nice but holy sht it was so much tougher than it looked in your video. On my durango , the ball joint bolts were really seized into the holes/knuckles. I tried beating the knuckles with a big hammer, no luck, got one of those big tuning forks and did some damage to that and still the bolts would not pop. I ended up having to use a small propane torch to heat up the knuckle just a little (after ripping out all the boot so that would not burn) Then try the fork again and it would come out after a few smacks. All 4 Ball joints were the same, I do not know if they used locktite or something but holy hell that was rough. I did luck out on the upper ball joint, looks like they had already been replaced at some point before I owned it and it had the bolts rather than rivets, I was prepared to drill them all out but got lucky. Glad it is all over. But ya, followed your steps and found the torque specs for my durango. Just got it back from the alignment shop and it is so much better. Now on to the water pump.

No matter how hard I tried-- bending the crap out of Autozone's ball joint press with an 1/2" drive socket and 6'' cheater bar, grinding the metal retaining tabs off the lower ball joints, heat, liquid wrench, I think I'll need a hydraulic press. For a rig that isn't mine, I'll let a shop handle it. Might be easier replacing the lower control arm...
I've read that original factory ball joints are a beotch to get out. I think those claims are true.

    • @jkline999

Postscript: got them out. One person holds a ball pien hammer, little side down, and you wail on it with a sledge.

Great video and I hope it will make replacing my lower ball joints easier. Noticed at 25:57 that CV boot looks cracked and getting ready to fail. Could just be my eyes, they are not what they use to be. And what's up with no rust. In NE if your truck isn't rusty, you have a hanger queen not a real truck. You can find rust on new trucks at the dealerships, which is pretty sad. Had a 96 extended cab 4x4 Dakota that was pretty rust proof. Granted it took about 2 blocks to turn around. As I understand it, Dodge used different steel blend back then, now they use the same as everyone else.
Can't wait to see all your video's, you make what takes me hours to do look really simple.
