More accurately its a sqare gate, that can move in 8 directions, down, down forward, forward, up forward, up, up back, back, down back, the 4 corners are just the way the gate restricts the bottom of the stick to travel, the stick has 4 micro switches that are up, down, left & right, when the stick goes into a corner it hits 2 direction on the micro switches simultaniusly giving it the other 4 diagonal directions.
That being said, there is a way you can turn the inner circle of the restrrictor gate so the stick only moves in a diamond shape making it "truly" a 4 way stick by removing all diagonal options, this is used for older games like pacman etc.
But I also preffere to use the octagonal gate, as I belive half circles and 360s are much easier with it, and I main Dudley so half circles are evrything.

Hello, I just got the 8bitdo arcade stick, I wonder if the built-in lever is compatible with most restrictor gate on the market like Sanwa or Hori? or do I have to find specific gate for the 8bitdo lever. Thank you!
Sorry for the late response. Yes. It’s compatible with many restrictor gates on the market. Most of them you can find on Amazon and eBay.
