  • I bought this 20 tons press for Harbor Freight and made some modifications and additions to it that were very helpful. I removed the hand pump for the press and replaced it with an air driven press, additionally added the SWAG off road finger break and some other little modifications to make it more useful for me.

    Ive had the 12ton press come apart (Yes, the press, not my workpiece or fixture) and dent my head. 1 quick ER trip to glue my head back shut and check for drain bamage and I was back in business. I got lucky to say the least...Thanks for the vid JIMBO

      What was the failure point?

    • @ravenbarsrepairs5594
      @ravenbarsrepairs5594 3 месяца назад

      @@mrmidnight32 I'm interested in that as well. Typically the failure point is the upper beam bending, but that's not an explosion.

    If you like to weld ; I welded a one X one inch piece of 1/4 stainless to an 8X8 X 1/2 steel plate because a piece of 1/4 X 2 that I was fabricating needed a Zee bend at 2x1x1. It worked making it possible to make a one inch bend. I got most of the bend with my jig and finished the 90 with a couple stacked angles.

    Grab a set of 3" casters from HF and they bolt right into the holes at the end of the base; makes it so much easier to move it out of the way and lifts it up a few inches for us taller fellas

    • @melgross
      @melgross 5 лет назад

      That’s dangerous. There’s a reason why there are bolt holes at the bottom, on the feet. With wheels you stand a chance of the thing zipping along the floor if something goes wrong. At the very least, use wheels that can be lifted up when the thing is in place so the wheels are always off the floor when it’s in use.

    I did the same type of press/air jack one thing I did was drive out the jack release pin and used a 1/4" nipple I drilled and put the pin back in, then put a bolt through the pipe and made a handle so you don't have to use the jack handle to release the pressure

    It looks like from the video that there is still two more height adjustment holes left above the one you are currently using. You could also add a set of hole midway between the current ones if needed for better adjustment.

    I, like you needed the work surface to be taller. I am 6'4'in tall. I also wanted my press on wheels. I attached 3" wheels with locks on a wooden 4 x 4 installed underneath the bottom angle iron from front to back. I think wheels on the ends of the bottom angle iron without front to back support weakens it. Lot of weight there especially with added accessories. This added about 7 in. to the working surface plus added support to the angle iron.

    I built my press from scrap parts and there is no reason you can not add some pieces to the bottom sides to get it up higher and I put wheels on mine to move around. add more holes to raise the lower plates OR I made pieces that go on the ram so it does not get beat up and you can make it longer or with smaller diameter rams or wider one as well nice work.

    Jimbo, I have the same press and keeping the jack handle handy was driving me batty. No matter where I last set it finding it was always a tad frustrating. The obvious solution was to place it on the top cross channel but it won't stay there on it's own. My solution was to drill and tap two holes 1/4-20 through the edge of the bottom lip about a foot or a little more apart. Then I screwed a couple of common machine screws up from the bottom. At some point I will put some vacuum hose over the exposed threads to tidy it all up but it works just fine without.
