A thought on retaining the anvil bar pins: put some o-rings on both sides of them. They wont be crushed or cut by the anvil bar since there is a bit of space between anvil bar ant the upright supports, and you wont be doing any destructive modification to the pins. Easy enough to slide one side off when you need to make a height adjustment.

@@FlawedOffroad i just bought the 20 ton HF press yesterday. I have a bad wheel bearing in my 05 Sequoia and figured id spent the money on tools instead of giving it to someone else to do. I already had the air-over hydraulic bottle jack so my mod was pretty instantaneous. My first ‘’official” run of the press was to drive my old timing belt tensioners back to the retracted position. The air jack makes it so nice to use. I also drove out the useless little pin on the release valve and put in a 2”long roll pin so now there’s enough length to turn the release with just a push of my finger. Happy trails!

Air over hydraulic jack is nice. I still use the jack handle for some things, like counting the number of pumps when I need to make more than one bend of the same angle.
Anyone with a shop needs to learn how to sharpen twist drills.
A better solution to press plate retention is to drill each one for four pins in a square. The pins go down into the press cross bar. Just make sure the features on the press plate is centered. You can even put the pins in far enough that they leave a lot of wiggle room. That way when not using the press plates, you still have a flat surface for other work without taking the press apart.
I have this exact mode and age of press for 10 years now, and have never had the jack move around at all, even when rolling the press around in the shop, over hoses, etc.
Agreed, everything in a shop under 400 lbs needs to be on wheels.
Put your jack handle on the top of the press in the grove between the top two channel iron pieces. I didn't weld my two pieces of jack handle together. I made the big one captive in the jack and it stays in the jack all the time. I just twist the jack so the handle doesn't stick out, then twist it back when needed. (Another reason not to bold down the jack.) Then the other part of the jack handle slides into it easily for hard pulls.
Drill your height adjustment pins for 3-point hitch pins. If you aren't a tractor guy, look it up. Cheap and easy in and out.
If your hydraulic jack is like mine, it has a brass air valve. You can take it all apart, silver solder on a mounting tab with a propane torch, then put it all back together again. Then you can mount the air valve using that tab and a bolt or two. If it has an aluminum body, some very careful TIG welding could do the same thing. But you might destroy it.
PS: no one wants to see you smoke. It does not make you look cool, just dumb.

Thanks for the ideas, i did another video (part 2) with another batch of mods to this thing more recently.
Ive seen the arbor plate pin idea in other videos but I wanted to come up with my own solution so I did

Bought one of these tonight and it worked great for pushing in some big bushings on the control arms of my Land Rover. In your video you mentioned the two part handle and the jack base not being there on your model as though they had eliminated it. Well two years later here I am saying that the one I bought had a one piece handle and the plate to bolt the jack. I don't know if I found some old stock or they went back to this design. Either way I'm looking forward to the upgrades. The air over hydraulic needs to happen. While pumping it like a peasant was effective, it was lame! Thanks for sharing your mods.

I just put together the same press. Only thing I was inquiring about when assembling it was how much do I thread in the nuts on the eyelit bolts for the springs. Obviously the tighter the spring pull down but don’t want to loose as well.
Love the mods your doing. I’ll probably stay with the current bottle Jack for a while bc I probably won’t use it as often as I use to. Use to do alot of pwc work n now it’s just my personal stuff. Definitely like the knob idea. I’m probably going to weld the 2 piece Jack pipe together. Also for the 2 pins to raise and lower the base i wantbto drill holes on each end so I can put some type of cotter pin through so they can’t be easily pushed through the holes by accident. Then the 2 metal plates. I want to drill a hole in each one all lined up with each other so when I’m done I can move them to the bottom n use the small V side on the bottom angle piece the put a bolt through with a wing nut to hold them down. Kinda like a weight rack storage. The top has a dip to put the Jack pipe to store but I’ll probably find some type of magnet to have on the side do when I’m done with that I’ll just stick it to it. Like the coaster idea. I might have to look into that.

I have a 3 yr old that likes to come out into the garage with me so keeping safety in mind was the idea for some of those ideas. Don’t want those plates to fall on him or even on my foot when storing n I don’t need the him to push the metal rods through and have the base cone crashing down

  • @steveobrien8792
    @steveobrien8792 5 месяцев назад

So I just bought my Press today 03/24 from Harbor Freight and It would appear that they are still clearing some old stock or maybe they have reverted back to the older model because My press still has the plate that the bottle jack bolts to. Also the piece that you bolted the Angled aluminum to, on mine has a metal strap on both ends that wrap around the legs so you couldn't remove that piece to flip it without completely disassembling the top of the press. I guess you could take an angle grinder to those straps though if you wanted the ability to flip it.

One thing maybe you know, is what is the problem when the air pump just stops working? What could the problem be -- I've tried the small valves and check the lines - all good, but admittedly have not used mine in a couple years on finding only the manual lever still works. Any clues? I can't find anything addressing this on YT or the internet.

Well I work with pneumatics a lot at work and what I can tell you is if you hadn’t used it for a long time the seals might be dry and stuck,, I would try disconnecting the air supply, squeeze the lever so that it opens up and dump some thin air tool oil down the hose and let it work its way into the cylinder and then keep trying it. If that doesn’t work you can take the thing apart it’s rebuildable

Do you know if the same pneumatic jack will fit the 12 ton press

Not sure but you can get a 12 ton pneumatic jack to match that press

@@moejr14 I had to build a little tab and drill a few holes, turns out hf had 2 different frames on the 20t press. The one at work would have. Bolted right in but the one at home was different. I think I covered that in my second press video. Maybe not. Also did a swag press brake video. There should be links from this vid to those

Use the original jack to open the space, put in a long piece of 2X4, let the origianl jack down, set the new one in the spot. You work too hard. Also, the smallest vice grips make a handle in 5 seconds

One worthwhile mod I'd like to do to mine is drill more holes for the pins. In needs another set on top and then I'd split the 2nd and 3rd holes for more pin locations. If you don't want the pins to fall out, drill, tap one side and install bolt and fat ass fender washer on the end.... Then when you shove them in from the front, they cant go out the back.

I still get the occasional coupons in my email along with I have a friend that works there so I get to use their employee discount from time to time. I have already done like four more mods to the press I just haven’t made the second video yet

That is too expensive for a home use shop press because you still need a compressor. Too many stuff to buy. unlike the original one all you need is your hand and a handle.

What "home shop" doesnt have a compressor, but has a press? at that rate its not a shop, its just a garage lmao. It doesnt take a high end compressor to run the air ram
