hey man, i swear to god your creations are incredible! i can't believe you only have 93k subs, i hope that quickly changes lol. anyways keep up good work!
A full size Super Button would be awesome, but I understand that is likely more difficult than is seems from this end. ...not to mention the cost, I forgot about that. Just goes to show how us viewers underestimate the difficulty of making something like this. : / Amazing work regardless, you're an inspiration for me to work on my own projects!
I think if you have a larger working area, a large storage room and more than one person willing to work on creating a decent amount of these cubes, you could possibly make a great business selling these cubes… (just a suggestion)
A cube clearly needs a nice large button to use it with. Also I know this would be extremely hard to do, but a lifesize turret cube that scoots around would be cool.
I thought about it and i think a large button that can wirelessly charge the cube (if it had a battery) while it's on the button would be really cool (oh shoot a guy above already said that, how i didn't notice it)
Next thing you outta do is create a replica of the Portal computer case seen in the behind the scenes areas in both Portal and Portal 2, complete with lights in the back which switch between red and orange. That'd be awesome.
I’d love to see a life size button that reacts to the cube (and makes it turn yellow…) I also thought that the main thing I’d use it for would be furniture of some kind. I’d put my feet on it while watching TV lol
@@richardkirkland6805 what about the big hydraulic security doors we see in the outdoor areas of Portal? They seems way more complex that the normal test chamber doors.
I know it's strange but since I was a child I knew if I could have one thing from portal IRL that wasn't the Portal Gun, it woyld be a cube. Seeing someone make a cube, one of the seemingly most mundane parts of the game real, is amazing and I am very happy rn
This is awesome, I especially love that you tried to reverse engineer the textures from in-game to make it as faithful as possible. Super cool video and recreation!
I think it's unreal how accurate your cube is to the game model. If anybody would be making a Portal movie/series then you should be the guy to build the props for that!
It would definitely be nice to see the 1500 Megawatt Aperture Science Heavy Duty Super-Colliding Super Button along with the cube, and possibly even the doors used in the test chambers (though I completely understand that making a giant door may be a little much)
Much like the real Aperture, you got a perfect product, but you basically burnt way more money than intended in the process! xD Been super looking forward to this video. Super impressed with how it turned out in the end! 💜
Small little detail you could add. In Portal 2 if you bring a companion cube up close to the camera you can actually hear it singing. having it play that song somehow would be a neat detail
I always doubted the companion coffin theory simply because the cube seemed to small to fit a body, but after watching this it seems perfectly reasonable
Another Aperture product you could try building would be a laser emitter along with a laser catcher. It could be the same size as your button or bigger/smaller. Have the laser emitter fire a red laser beam, and a laser catcher that will detect it (maybe with a sensor) acting like the one in game (makes a sound and spins the outer ring) if it's not too hard (it also has a yellow light when activated and a blue light when idle)
or acting similar to a wiimote when pointed at the sensor bar (the wiimote uses light emitted from the sensor bar to detect where the cursor is idk how to explain it)
the thing with this is that the laser would be invisible unless there was something that could cause the Tyndall effect to show up, so itd be incredibly hard :(
My favorite part about this is seeing new comments every minute and for every premier you're here thanking your fans and being a part of your community
As soon as I saw it finished and with the cable attached, "Computer case" is immediately what popped in my head. Great minds think alike. _-Though mine not nearly as great ha.-_
You are awesome, man. I'm from Argentina, I don't even understand English very well, but I understood all your steps and your plans. I'll try to make the cube myself with your files, but I think I'll do everything in PLA to make it cheaper haha
Amazing execution, truly professional in every way. The wall power opens up some possibilities. About the ideas, maybe put a speaker inside? And maybe some kind of proximity sensor that would trigger the lights and sounds, though that would be really difficult.
Can you make the HEV suit or the HEV charging station next? I know it might be crossing lines between both Science companies Black Mesa and Aperture Science but if you just don’t tell Magnusson then you will be fine. Doing the good work for the Valve communities, keep it up!
Incredible work man! Such a professional job everywhere. I love your mounting for the edge and corner accents. And the lighting is such a perfect even glow cos you got so much diffusion distance. Really cool 🙂
It would be cool to instead of having full-on plates for the hearts to have a small hole on each side with magnets to swap out the heart and aperture logo
Should've made the Portal 1 Companion Cube. It doesn't have the lights and it's the iconic one anyway since it's the one you actually carry around in P1 (Which isn't retconned by P2s new designs since you see the original Companion Cube at the end of P2 in the final cutscene) (Actually though this is really cool)
An RGB Portal Gun would be awesome to see, especially since no one has really made a quality replica Portal Gun for quite a long time (as far as I know without doing research). I don't know why, but RGB in a Portal Gun would look really cool and kinda funny to me.
Realistically speaking, you could connect the cube via RFID sensors in the Heart mold to the button, to register it being pressed, OR have the LEDs connectable via Bluetooth (or some other wireless connection) and have the cubes light up room by room, puzzle by puzzle.

There was a scrapped idea to have Cave Johnson's brain uploaded into a companion cube as a scene in portal 2, that would be plugged in sitting in old aperture. So at least 1 plugged in companion cube was intended to be canon, so I think this still counts

No suggestions for uses, just wanted to say that: considering the weight and production expense of a full-scale cube, I feel like a 60%* scale version would make a good compromise. Now, I'm no engineer, and - realistically speaking - it's probably not going to bring the cost and weight down to 60% equally, but it might be more feasible (whilst also taking up less space. Not everybody has a workshop to store stuff in). * - (I say "60%" scale because I've used VR to experiment with finding a comfy scale for Portal cubes and - for me at least - 60% feels extremely comfortable to hold/wrap your arms around while still being bigger than your head. If anything, the comfort might make it less painful to carry).
This is incredible work! I look forward to each time you upload, mr Volt :) Might attempt to make a companion cube myself for decoration in my room, but likely out of cheaper materials haha. But it seems like a fun project to do with my mom who is just as crafty as me :)

It's so cool to see the cube. It's absolutely massive! I love to see the passion that you put into all of your projects, even ones as (seemingly) simple as a cube. You should create those fake windows seen in portal 1 and two, the ones that were just basically three images on top of each other, but this time with RGBs! They if you find a white can get testing! Providing you make a fully functional portal gun, of course..

Incredible work!! I forgot how absolutely massive the cubes are in game, Source really doesn't do sense of scale any justice, huh?
It's more flat-screen games in general then source specifically, but yeah
they're massive exactly to account for that distorted sense of scale, as are a lot of other models
I've tried The Lab in VR and there's a scene with ATLAS, P-Body and GLaDOS and damm they are huge, specially GLaDOS!
Have you seen Subnautica scale comparisons? In game everything seems tiny but in engine the fish are half as big as you are.
It has a lot to do with the focal distance one uses (angle of view), it can really change how we perceive a scene.
