I got caned scores of times and cried once, from a sense of injustice when I felt it was undeserved. One of our teachers used a pencil block across the backside, another a steel ruler (metalwork teacher), several chose a gym slipper as weapon of choice. The odd thing is there seemed to be less bullying back then.
That's great acting by the headmaster, I actually knew teachers like that in the North when I was a kid. Bob Bowes was the actors name I think, there's no justice in the world he should have done more movies, I think he only did this one. RIP
@@chipesh There you go, he reminds me of Mr. Matthews headmaster from St James Junior school in the early 1980s Darwen, Lancashire. He and his wife were 'tw@ts'; he was rumored to have a cane etc but I never saw it or heard of any of the pupils getting hit by him. Although Mrs Wilde back then banging pupils heads together (it happened to me for talking in a queue) she dished out the punishment but I actually liked her style of teaching and her no nonsense zero tolerance attitude, she emigrated to Australia and was saddened to see her leave. I remember the replacement of Mrs Wilde was a young woman teacher with long jet black frizzy hair and she used to slap my legs as punishment, she was a boiler bunny for sure but I was the oldest pupil to wear shorts at that school even in Winter because I actually liked her having my legs slapped ! sounds deviant but it was just that I was so bored and felt dead there that I needed some sort of excitement. The hitting stopped after I moved out of that school to a junior school in the suburbs of Preston. The only thing of interest at the St JAmes School in Darwen were the Monthly book club posters on the wall where you got those Steve Jackson / Ian Livingstone Fighting Fantasy books up for sale on pre-order - another escape of mine from the mind blowing boredom.
He looks a lot like my teacher back in 1975. 76 Mr parks. You may have heard of him. He murdered his wife and dumped her body in Coniston lake back in the summer of that year.
@@Boilingfrogg is that the 'Lady In The Lake'' trial on Wikipedia Mr Parks you are referring to. Wonderful to know that these people of these great establishments are capable of stone cold murder.
This was filmed without any warning to the boys that they were really going to be caned so that it got the full impact for the take... they were real tears... Poor laddie on the end.. I always felt sorry for him.
Absolutely agree. As a guy who grew up in these kind of schools this arsehole headmaster was typical of the thugs who would literally often abuse children. I wish to God I had decked a couple of them. At 55 that kid's teary eyes really hits home. Great acting but really upsets me.
We used to put blotting paper down thee trousers - to minimise pain; it also doubled as a 'sponge', of sorts, to soak up any pee that might go down thine leg. Aye, it brings me back . . .
What would you make of today's kids sir? Great film 🎥 👌always been a favourite of mine, and it feels very nostalgic for me as I was as young as the kids in it when it first came out!
Went through school with mindless thugs like this Also note director never told Casper the dead kestrel at end was infact one that had already died at local sanctuary, his reaction was as he thought they had actually killed a kesrel
This is a double edged sword I can respect the head teacher is trying too tell them smoking is bad for your health and waste of money which is absolutely correct, there is no respect any more again he's correct, but the cane is it really a deterrent.
Many years ago at certain schools in "Nottinghamshire we had the old "Queen Elizabeth's grammar school for boys. The cane was put to good use, and yes, in my humble opinion it was a deterrent. However, I can understand your sensible comments. It produced qualities within pupils that this generation will never, ever have unfortunately!
Mr laughing Leprechaun having seen illnesses related to smoking, I quit smoking and tell everyone how much better my health is and recommend this to everyone. 🙏🏻
"Ahhh! a regular cigarette factory, aren't you?" Mr. Gryce is awesome. This is such a great film. However, do they still speak like that in Yorkshire with all the "thee's" and "thou's?"
Bob Bowes was the actor, he never did any other movie. No justice in the world. Was said to be a real life head master at the time of filming this also. He died in 1979, 10 years after this was filmed.
The dialect is still prevalent within certain areas of West and South Yorkshire. Though this is of course set in Barnsley. My father in law and his brother still say 'tha' and 'thi' and 'neet' for night though it seems to be dying out amongst the younger generations.
Only High School or Comprehensive "child" that deserves the belt or taws, cane , is the persistently violent bully. Personally i feel it was used too cheaply in my '70s and early '80s days. Christ, we were real children as young as 6 in '74. Receiving end there and i have one or two horror stories. Glad when we scrapped it '82. Humane. But i want it brought back now for the violent ones. Saw what banning it did to society in the UK in the end.
I assume you understand that the little kid on the end was just bringing a message to the headmaster and wasn't a smoker, its funny because he gets caned for doing nothing wrong.
It's without fail the most heartbreaking moment in British cinema. That poor boy!
You’re joking ,right?
Not heartbreaking.........its funny.
I read that the boy that got the blame for the cigarettes didn't know what was coming and the tears were real 😪
Snowflake! It’ll make a MAN of him even though it was unjust.
Bring back national service a bloody discipline fgs please ! 🙄
His little face. They looked like genuine tears.

Tell me about it LOL!!!
Except from the people in authority.
One of Britain's greatest post war films,a classic.
Tim, I totally agree with you in what you said. Classic film! Wonderful!

Robert Bowes was a real headmaster. He was mine in Castleford.

Crying with laughter. Hilarious. Just like my school days.
Never gets old
Doesn't make me laugh. Just sad.
One of the finest moments in British film history
Yes siree. Absolutely
Tim Howard
Aww bless you 🤧 take care Tim. 🙏🏻 I hope that you are pain free 🙏🏻 xx
Bad acting but that's what made it so real in a way?
Bob Bowes was headmaster at a real comprehensive school in Barnsley. He died in 1979 at the age of 57.
Happy to hear he died young.
Levi Tate that’s a horrible thing to say
He was Headmaster at Ashton Road Secondary Modern in Castleford. My headmaster at the time.
I read he was a good bloke as a headmaster
Damn how it changed
i read the book when I was in my final year of school i also watched the film
Things never change.
"The slipper and the cane instilled some great qualities within a certain people. Such punishment if deserved never harmed anyone.
Doctor Dolittle I remember sweaty Bettie in history and the chalk throwing
If u do owt wrong that's what happens don't get caught lol

‘mindless thugs’. Do you mean the teachers or the pupils ? .

He says himself they will all carry on regardless of being caned regularly.

Some of kids nowadays need taking in woods and twatting with a shovel. Ruthless the kids of nowadays
Grice Pudding.
They need to bring back the birch in schools! Kids today have no manners, it is no longer they cannot get jobs when they leave school!
So boys and girls should be birched
Caine some sense into them.
this is what horrible kids need today
This young boy was only delivering a message to the head and he got the cane. Horrible headteacher. He shouldn't be a headmaster
I fail to see what´s funny about it. It was very real at the time.
I assume you understand that the little kid on the end was just bringing a message to the headmaster and wasn't a smoker, its funny because he gets caned for doing nothing wrong.
yeah hilarious! :/
i think ironic, but probably not funny
it's funny when they're laughing then it's touching and painful and unjust- the violence inherent in the system
4:10 Put that rubbish away!
Just let kids do what they need to do to be happy. We aren’t guaranteed the next few seconds. Who gives a shit🥰
That is ASSAULT ......
yeah, ruined his life that did lol pffft
Yes sadly these days it is.
Teachers can be abusive to other students!
