  • While the R40 might appear uninteresting, there is a lot going on in terms of its design that makes it an excellent time capsule of ThinkPad engineering.

I'm a simple man. I see a ThinkPad video made by @LaptopRetrospective, I watch it and click like.

Excellent! The R series aren't the "Rubbish" series. As some snobs like to dismiss them as. I bought one brand new in about 2005. It's an R50e, which is an even more "value" model. Missing the trackpad and docking port. It was the cheapest ThinkPad you could buy. I still have it, in fact I have two now! Still going strong so many years later. Both are Dohan Pentium M with 2x1gb PC2700 DDR and sporting the Intel Extreme Graphics 2. If you didn't specify the Wifi card you didn't get the socket!
One thing about the CMOS batteries. When they fail you may get all manner of spurious errors. HDD errors and EC (embedded controller) failure messages. I cut the batteries out of the plastic cover. Peel off the metal contacts from the battery, flatten them back out and tightly wrap them back onto a new CR2032 with electrical tape. It may then take a few boot cycles for the machine to stop sulking. I wonder how many have been thrown away just because of bad CMOS batteries?

Too many I suspect. I've brought back several machines that had loads of errors due to the battery tripping all sorts of codes.

To be honest I love the appearance of the R series models more than their T series counterparts. R for "Rubbish"? Dilettantes.

I found an R40 in my school's electronics recycling (Not quite recycling, but just where the doomed laptops go). The IT Director let me have it, and it powered on and worked perfectly (after bullying the CMOS)! However, I found a newer T-series and, as is usual with these old T-series, the rubber coated lid had started to melt. Overall, I think that despite their budget nature, the R-series is better for longevity (despite the ATI cards) because of the relative durability, as well as lacking the rubber lid of the T-series. R-series ftw!

I have a t60, t61, t520i and a t40 like this. All of them have been modded with ssd, more ram, better processors and all running variations of linux. I love thinkpads. Thanks for the video mate. Love from Australia 🦘🌏

@@LaptopRetrospectiveI love working on them!! I recently acquired another beautiful t61. Just installed 4gb ddr2 and a 1tb SSD, new 9 cell battery . Runs like majic. Using Linux tails

This is a wonderful look at an interesting machine. The bits of Rob Herman were great to see as well.

It's really cool to see all the different things that came together to make what could have been a boring computer an interesting one.

Never seen an R40 series machine before, thank you for the video! I think the R4x is more comparable to T3x models than T4x, whose R-series counterparts are the R5x. One can take the motherboard from an R52 and put it into a T43.

I use and will always stick to the T61 Series with 3 gig ram.

I normally removed the Mini PCI WiFi cards from the classic ThinkPads in my collection. Not much use anyway.

I've heard of writers doing that for making some distraction free computers for writing purposes.

Ultrabay 2000 is any time better than Ultrabay Slim. U can gut out the DVD drive and replace with a PATA to SATA caddy for a 2nd drive. I modded old T30 this way.
Unfortunately, u cannot do the same for Ultrabay Slim. Hard to find the caddy for my X6 and X6T docks.
