I am actually surprised the OEM battery worked at all after almost 20 years sitting unused. I have a T60 laptop is from 2006, and most of the sealed batteries for that unit are already dead, even the ones made aroumd 2010. They just slowly discharge sitting in their box, and the controller circuit it the battery completely kills it by disableing it from taking a charge. Is it possible these older Thinkpad batteries didn't have that feature yet?
I am really thunkimg about re-celling my T6p batteries, I have a bunch, but only a couplemof those have decent capacity, most of them last only a few minutes, and quite a few of them are completely dead. And many of them.discarges by themselves in a few weeks just sitting, se I really need to do something about them, before the controller will kill most of them.

I dont believe the pcb discharges the 18650 cells, as they discharge on their own without any help.
Just be careful if you re-cell your battery packs and dont use speaker wire like i did the first go around.
The reason my first accident happened was because the speaker wire frayed on to a smaller negative wire when i crushed the pcb in to the plastic housing.

Geez first time around did you also actually reverse the polarity on the positive group of 2 cells? Pretty hilarious video on things not to do gotta say!
I came across this video because I just rebuilt R40 battery - the proper way that is exactly as safe as out of the factory! I posted that on the thinkpad forum (RUclips would shadow delete comments that have links)

first go round i was replicating ibm's stock pattern. 2nd go round i did it the "aftermarket way" as it was a bit simpler.
Thanks for the comment and I hope you got some entertainment value out of it!
(the battery is still going strong!)

@@retro-af Well like at 1:55 I see the bottom left 2 cells have the notch side (positive) facing right which if I'm not wrong means that group is reversed, so your bms would've fried even if it didn't literally fry.
But yeah I saw your attempt at replicating the aftermarket design and that is done a lot better indeed, although one potential hazard is that the tab 90 degrees off positive terminal has no insulation, that could be a fire hazard if that tab slices through the body of the cell through friction... If it comes out of the negative terminal and folds 90 degrees onto the cell body then it would've been okay. Something to keep in mind next time you do something like that!
I guess I'm obsessed with ironing out details like that, because with the battery sealed up if it shorts and starts igniting its much harder to stop the thermal runaway!

@@retro-af So yeah I did send a request did you see it?
Yeah I'm on a streak of battery rebuilds right now, from ordinary acer laptops to some real beasts with impossible to find batteries
