Good call with the 2 E-Bow tracks. I always thought that it might be a sampled melodica for infinite sustain. However, the glissando at the end of the songs gives it away that it’s actually a guitar played with a E-Bow.
The birdsong effect can be achieved by taking a finger slide and sliding up the high E and B strings past the neck and up by the pick ups. It sounds like Noel's sliding back and forth between the pick up and the end of the neck
Other people have commented this, but I would love to see a future video dissecting Bonehead's rhythm guitar sound and how important it is to the overall 'wall of sound' you get in Oasis songs. Particularly in a song like Supersonic, where I've always felt his guitar is especially clear and isolated (whereas in most other songs his and Noel's rhythm parts kinda blend together) and it sounds amazing. Love your work, as always!!
OK... thanks to the golden-eared subscriber / viewer community for these supplemental tracks... TRACK 28 - second acoustic guitar track, panned right, piezo sound, lower in the mix (thanks to Jimboobism for that one). Interesting note - the rhythm is different to Noel's louder track, so this one is probably Bonehead. TRACK 29 - audible low A mellotron drone blended with the 2 E bows which stops abruptly at around 7m19s, audible in the original track (thanks to Matt Phillips for that one) RE BIRDSONG (?) EFFECT - I've had several different suggestions so far on this one. Someone mentioned it is Paul Weller whistling, someone said it is a bottleneck being played over the pickups, someone else said it was an actual recording of birdsong, and someone else suggested pick scrapes on a heavily effects-processed guitar... Let me know if anyone has sources for these and I will update this post. Ta. UPDATE - Sound Engineer from the WTSMG sessions Nick Brine has responded to this question! Got another potential one re: mellotron. After the first chorus during the quieter sections ie verses and octave guitar solos, I’m not sure if there are very high droning notes, it’s very faint and sounds a bit like the “flutes” sound of a mellotron. I might be wrong as it could just be the harmonics from the ebow guitar parts.
James, I know this website is the least reputable source on the internet but on the personnel section for the song on Wikipedia, Owen Morris is credited for ‘whistle’ so this could potentially be the bird whistling effect. As mentioned though, it probably should be taken with a grain of salt
Thanks James from Bergamo, Italy!!! Your videos are really brilliant, I've been a massive Oasis fan since 1994 and, unfortunately, a crap guitar player but you give me the will to play more and more!!! 😉
cheers, no, I don’t think the shaker egg is being used as a metronome because when they talk about the making of the album, Noel and Owen Morris both say that they recorded to a click
@@JamesHargreavesGuitar Interesting. I think I once heard in an interview Noel talking about Phil Spector's Wall of Sound and maybe that's what he was going for. I knew there was a lot going on in some of the WTSMG tracks but never would have guessed that Champagne Supernova had 27 tracks, and DLBIA had so many.
I always think this song is a bit too crowded especially at the 2nd interlude but like in a beautiful way. It's like seeing a star going supernova slowly with all the colors, sparks explosions and stuff while I'm high on psychedelic drugs. The waves sfx and melodica part are also magical (which I've always thought as harmonica or accordion) And lastly, there's hope for me to be a professional triangle (THE MIGHTY TRIANGLE) player. Really enjoying these analysis videos, James. Champagne supernova is a great song with that awesome mid-section and killer solo by Paul Weller. Great stuff, James look forward to your next CS video.

Great vid. Re. Very fascinating possibility! So the upper two notes are the two e-bow tracks and there is a lower drone which is the mellotron... I think that is definitely a possibility. @@JamesHargreavesGuitar It is very difficult to hear on the standard mix unless you know what you're looking for. The waves (Noel said in an interview once) were recordings of Bonehead, Liam and I'm guessing Guigsy messing around in a canoe on the lake (that apparently you have to cross to get to the recording studio). They were messing around doing that while Noel was working hard in the studio.
@@JamesHargreavesGuitar I don't sorry. I have the feeling it was on the interviews included with the Definitely Maybe 10th Anniversary DVD I used to have but maybe not as it's not a Definitely Maybe track is it but if it was recorded at the same studio, may have just mentioned that.
Superb video James! Thanks very much. Regarding the bassline, I’ve often wondered if the bass in the alternate Brendan Lynch mix on the Morning Glory reissue (CD2, track 13) is a different bass part by Noel. Seems much more active and melodic to me. Higher in the mix too, relative to Owen M’s mix. Maybe Lynch found this in the multitrack when he was remixing(?).
Re the remix, i think that was added in by Lynch himself, along with some of the organ sounds that can be heard early on in the mix. To be honest, I think the bassline on the BL remix is probably a little more advanced than Noel's playing, personally
16:55 - I do that all the time since 1988. It's just gliding the guitar pic up n down one of the thicker guitar strings, obviously with some flanger and reverb added.
He's just doing short couple of fret jumps up n down at a time, maybe like down tthree frets up two, obviously not exactly that, but do something like that on each of the 4 lower strings, one of them should be the one that makes that sound.
There's also reportedly a harmonium, which Bonehead probably played on the melodica in the video, and a piano (which probably doubled Bonehead's rhythm guitar?).
There’s a guitar break starting around the 4:35 mark which sounds a lot like Paul Weller to me, not sure if you mentioned that. It has a kind of Stanley Road vibe.
16:20 I’m pretty sure the “laughter” is actually seagulls recorded by McCartney. Might even be played backwards aswell I can’t remember. Thinks it’s in the anthology book. There is laughter recorded on the end of sgt peppers though.
I might be very late but that ebow must have been mixed in with a different instrument, the reason why i think that is because bonehead got credited with playing harmonium
I love your oasis breakdowns. How do you manage to get these isolated tracks? They are superb and I'd love to learn to create backing tracks as I'm learning guitar recently. Much love from Brazil! 👏🇧🇷
Hi Pedro - for this I used the rock band isolated tracks - you can find lots of these on youtube just by looking for 'champagne supernova isolated' or similar. I also used the individual tracks from the SACD version of this album. Hope that helps, cheers, James
Now I don't know for sure if this is actually the mellotron track, But I had to come here and say it. There exists a video on youtube called champagne supernova unmixed, And during the part just before wellers guitar solo, I can definitely hear something out of the ordinary. To me, it did not sound like an e-bow, And slowly but surely I came to the conclusion that it may or may not be the mellotron. Keep in mind this mellotron track is in the really loud part of the song, So no wonder nobody can hear it. I would love to hear what you think about this, James.
Hey James, how are you I just found out the live budokan 98 version of champagne supernova is it possible for you to tab it out and speak about it ? Cheers mate. 😃
Hi Rhys, its good, the only thing I dont like on it is the phaser effect that is on various parts of the mix at different times. I think its a good contrast to the original mix, because its so spacious and open, a lot more sparse than the absolutely overwhelming amount of stuff in the Owen Morris version. I'll be honest though, I do prefer the Morris mix, and I tend to use the BL remix mostly for reference if I want to hear certain buried tracks a little clearer.
16:07 That to me sounds like he’s playing with a slide way up past the end of the neck, like what Gary Rossington does on Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd (but with a shitload of echo added)
Thanks smitcher, I used isolated tracks on youtube and for this song I also listened to the isolated 5.1 tracks from the SACD mix of the Morning Glory album
Thanks. Just do a youtube search for champagne supernova isolated tracks. I also used the Super Audio CD which is in 5.1 surround sound, so you can hear the song split into 5
Would really like to know the pedals Noel used on Champagne Supernova LIVE AT BUDAKON, 1998. This is Noels best lead for this song but i believe heavily influenced by pedals. Esp if you can identify the one that just sounds like it’s resonating and floating on air. Thanks John in Louisiana,

He's just doing short couple of fret jumps up n down at a time, maybe like down tthree frets up two, obviously not exactly that, but do something like that on each of the 4 lower strings, one of them should be the one that makes that sound.
Brilliant song and research!
The “bird effect” sounds like pic scrapes on a heavily effected guitar. Could have been a happy accident thing.
Yeah sounds possible
My guess would be that there's a slide involved.
I always thought it was noel whistling
There's also reportedly a harmonium, which Bonehead probably played on the melodica in the video, and a piano (which probably doubled Bonehead's rhythm guitar?).
Amazing stuff
Cheers Chris
There’s a guitar break starting around the 4:35 mark which sounds a lot like Paul Weller to me, not sure if you mentioned that. It has a kind of Stanley Road vibe.
Yes that's Paul Weller's solo, I did mention it 👍🎸
16:20 I’m pretty sure the “laughter” is actually seagulls recorded by McCartney. Might even be played backwards aswell I can’t remember. Thinks it’s in the anthology book. There is laughter recorded on the end of sgt peppers though.
Could listen to this song for the rest of my life
It's a goodun...
Great Video
I might be very late but that ebow must have been mixed in with a different instrument, the reason why i think that is because bonehead got credited with playing harmonium
Definitely enjoying listening to tracks I haven't heard in years after all your analysis videos.
Great! Thanks for watching
How do you isolate the tracks? Do you have access to stems? Cheers
Missed the part where you can hear Liam or Noel shouting “come on” at 4:17 on album version.
Yes I did miss that - but I would've thought that was on his backing vocals stem? I would be surprised if he added that on an entirely separate track
How are you able to get these recording and dissect them?
I use isolated tracks that can be found on youtube, and also the tracks that are available from the SACD mix of the morning glory album
2:29 sounds like one bell from a glockenspiel. C# to be precise. No triangle.
16:24 could be Alien/UFO FX from one of those 90's keyboards/synths with more processing?
Great, you have sub from me! Any chance for BHN era songs deconstruction?
Thanks! Possibly in the future yeah, could be fun 👍👍🎸🎸
Such a great song
Hey James, my guess for the birdsong bit is a slide through effects
Very interresting thanks. Hello de la France. Suggestion for the next one : Acquiesce ?
Hello back de la England! Cool, thanks for the suggestion - noted 👍👍🎸🎸
Hi James, What do you think of The Brendan Lynch remix of the track that was featured on the Deluxe Edition of WTSMG?
Great job again James. Curious though, where do you get these separated tracks?
Thanks smitcher, I used isolated tracks on youtube and for this song I also listened to the isolated 5.1 tracks from the SACD mix of the Morning Glory album
@@JamesHargreavesGuitar Thank you, that makes sense. What a track!!
Great video.
How are you able to isolate the tracks?
Thanks. Just do a youtube search for champagne supernova isolated tracks. I also used the Super Audio CD which is in 5.1 surround sound, so you can hear the song split into 5
@@JamesHargreavesGuitar Brilliant, thanks!
Would really like to know the pedals Noel used on Champagne Supernova LIVE AT BUDAKON, 1998. This is Noels best lead for this song but i believe heavily influenced by pedals. Esp if you can identify the one that just sounds like it’s resonating and floating on air. Thanks John in Louisiana,
Did they slow down liams voice to make that note last longer? That Liam lead vocal part sounded super weird in the video
Hahahaha nah that was me just farting about... I extended it by like 400% or something cause it made me laugh
