Three Cozy Vintage-Style Skirts // Matching All the Plaids
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 сен 2024
- In winter, I like cozy things and plaid. So I figured I would spend this week making three cozy plaid skirts, great for vintage style or historybounding. But I wanted to experiment with different skirt methods, so each of these are made using a different method.

Your attention to detail in matching the pattern in the green plaid skirt really highlights your ability as a seamstress, and also champions the reason for home sewing. You have created a courtier skirt, that would sell, for hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars.
Thank you so much!
PNW Plaid lovers unite!!! So glad I’ve found another local RUclipsr! Love the skirts you’ve made.
My cats help my sewing by keeping the ironing board warm. They love to stretch out and watch me sew, but get very annoyed when I need to press the seams. Time to buy a spare ironing board for the cats.
My ironing board has a bend at the end from my cats sitting on it and jumping off. Perhaps the cheapest board at Walmart wasn't the best choice 😅
That's like when people get a dummy keyboard for the cats, too! :)
The navy flannel is my favorite of the three! The pattern really looks great with the knife pleats, and hearing that it's cozy and warm just makes me love it even more!
These are truly inspirational. You make it look so easy (in a "I can do this...maybe..no, I can DO this" kind of way not a boring too easy kind of way) and now I want to go buy some fabric!
Thank you! And you can do this! :)
I never realized how much math was involved! Finicky work! I am impressed
The neckline on that Christmas dress you are wearing is so pretty on you! The skirts turned out lovely! And sweet Lion....sigh....
Thank you! :)
Yes, I wanted to comment the same thing! The neckline looks beautiful! It also very nicely accents the pretty necklace ❤
All the skirts are wonderful. Love that you added pockets!!!
I love them!! The green is my fav! But I love the blue and how straight the lines look! Ugh, just perfect! Yay, for matching!
Thank you! ♥️
I'm envious of both the delightful skirts and the very long quilting ruler. I've only seen the 24 inch ones around here and often they just aren't long enough
Thank you! That 36" one is a total necessity. This is the one I have, and it's a game-changer! www.amazon.com/dp/B000YZ5U1U/?tag=aiponsite-20&linkCode=ic5&ascsubtag=amzn1.infl.us.product&creativeASIN=B000YZ5U1U&ref=exp_ladyrebeccafashions_dp_vv_d
Thank you for showing the three different styles of skirts side by side. I'm not great at fashion stuff and it was really interesting to see just how different changing the methods can can change so much about how it hangs and swings.
I am feeling inspired to go home after work today and cut out a new circle skirt. Navy blue polyviscose wool...warm and cozy!
Ooh, that sounds delightful!
All that's left is the waistband and zipper...and of course he hooks & eyes 👀
The Isabella McTavish Fraser dress is my dream project. Dealing with plaid is so intimidating to me, but your tips make it seem doable. Great job!
These look fabulous! The Blue one gives me Ravenclaw vibes!
Thanks! And I can see that! :)
I adore that blue skirt and I love the other two as well! And that wholesome bit at the end? *chefs kiss*
Aww, thank you! :)
They're all so cute!! I love how you have the completely unhelpful kitty and the very good doggo who comes when you call and settles down right next to you as if on cue.
Lol. Lion responds to commands a little better than Dora does. ;)
Such cute skirts! And aww, Lion and Dora are so adorable! What would we do without our fuzzy friends?
Thank you! They are definitely my favorite little friends!
Useful, interesting, and informative. Thank you for making this. And the little cat has a sweet face; I'm glad she bumped the camera lens.
They all came out good but the blue one stands out, it's fantastic! I wouldn't have expected that considering that the fabric is so simple.
+LadyRebeccaFashions *Thanks for the demonstration of building a pleated skirt with insufficient contiguous fabric for a proper kilt.* 45" waist circumference _really_ requires 4 yards to accommodate the deep knifeplaiting of the Thomas Rawlinson design prototyped in Glengarry (GBR).
That blue one would look cute with your bicycle sweater
I'm actually wearing them together today! :)
Loved all three skirts! Absolutely beautiful 🤗.
The navy blue skirt is darling, to waist and hem horizontal paid line shows up and its perfect. Not visible if back is shorter because the dark navy and white stripe is so dominate.
Great job wished I had your courage and energies, to persevere and make such master pieces.
Thank you!
You had me at skirts. PLAID!!!! I LOVE PLAIDS THIS TIME OF YEAR!!!
Yay! Me too. Like, just plaid every day. :)
I want a skirt out of that grey fabric. 😄 Sounds like I need to go on fabric hunt before I use the ones I already have.
Yeah, I'm not sure if it's seasonal or what, but I'd hit Joanns sooner rather than later!
I have the entire atlantic ocean between me and the next Joanns. Maybe I can get something interesting here.
@@anaisabelsantos4661 Aww, darn. But I'll bet you can find something just as good/even better where you are!
The plaid on that xmas dress looks really good across the bodice. You got the thick red stripes in the perfect place across the bust. Your channel is a blast. Please keep posting all of this. I live in Eugene, OR, where rain is well, rain is well, rain... Happy plaids are totally necessary for this time of year.
Thank you! :)
Just lovely, all of them. You look fabulous!
Absolutely adore those fabrics and your skirts... now to tell myself I don't need more from the plaiditudes collection 😬
Thank you! That collection is dangerously addicting. They're so soft!
@@LadyRebeccaFashions Soft and a decent weave! Some of the Joann's flannels feel too loose but those are lovely. Particularly love how wintery that pale grey buffalo plaid is
I love the cozy ending to this video with the tea and cookie and puppy 😭💜 so cute.
Love the buffalo plaid and navy, but I know I am less likely to do box pleats. Also glad to know ours isn't the only one that names dogs after other animals. We've had Wolf, Bear, and Kitty.
Thanks! I have to admit - I can't take credit for Lion's name, because he came with it, but it does really fit him. :)
So happy to see this video! I'm currently washing 5 different plaid end of bolts of flannel to turn into skirts for me and my two daughters! I was planning on all half-circle skirts, but I may try box of knife pleats after watching your video!! Thank you!
Yes, give those plaids the pleats they deserve! :) Good luck on all your skirts!
PNW Canada, and true, not much snow!
Aww one of my pet rats has the same name than your cat :) I really love how these skirts look. Shame i can only sew mediocre looking doll clothes. I would definitely be overwhelmed with trying to sew something that would actually fit me. I do enjoy making crochet tops, dresses and sweaters though.
Thank you! Skirts are honestly a great place to start, because the only fitted part is the waistband (or nowhere, if you do an elastic waist skirt). You should give it a go!
I love plaid fabrics but my nervous system goes out of window trying to match lines . I am how ever been looking online today loads of wintery plaid flannels for dresses . Which means all the chocolate in the world will not saving me from breakdown and tantrums ,likely also wasted fabric when I did few big boo boos . Thank you for the video , skirts are lovely and you are such of joy to watch . Ray of happy sunshine !
Thank you! If matching plaids bothers you that much, then just don't worry about matching them! I'm a little too ocd to let the not matching thing happen, if I can avoid it.
I love your fabric stash.
Love the blue one best also!!!!
Thanks!
As pnw person, I hear you. Puddle boots are necessary, but my son and I keep hoping to use our snow boots in snow.
I so hope it snows sometime soon. That would be lovely.
Sometimes a slip makes all the difference!
You're an amazing lady. These are beautiful skirts. I look forward to each new video.
Thank you so much!
Beautiful skirts... I've only just found your tutorials and they are so informative as I am a plus size too and my plan for 2023 is to make myself some clothes... I've never made any before so this could be interesting!! Thank you again from a cold west wales in the UK
Thank you! Good luck on your sewing!
Unintentionally watched a whole 38 min video on making skirts, after the bustle video, because The Feline didn't want to give me my arm back. You know, because, why would I intentionally watch a video on something I will actually make, when I can watch videos on things I'm curious about and have utterly no intention of ever making or wearing.
Glad I did, because I have a somewhat better idea why my previous, skirt attempt likely deviated from what I thought I was making.
These all came out gorgeous!
My daughter wants to know where you got your kettle. We think it is super cool!
Thank you! It's actually my roommate's, but if she moves out, I'm going to have to get one for myself!
I had 3 yards of the plaiditude heavy flannel in a red/gray plaid. I just did a half circle skirt, but it did have to be a little shorter than I originally wanted. I made my 3 yo a little skirt with my extras.
Constructing a skirt 3 different ways with 3 different plaids - I think I needed that... A skirt like this has been on my "want to make" list for years. I obviously need a kick in the b* to do it xD Maybe you managed that with this video.
I really love how they turned out, they seem really cozy and wintery!
Love this video and your skirts came out wonderfully! My favorite is definitely the green one
Thank you! :)
Hey! Fellow PacNW sewist! :D
I just bought a metric crapton of plaid to do something similar. I love this!!
Nice! I mean, I know it's such a stereotype about us up here, but I think we really do all love plaid. ;)
@@LadyRebeccaFashions sometimes you just gotta lean into the stereotypes... And this is a benine enough stereotype, that I say "Bring on the plaid!"
Seattlite here. Plaid is PNW perfect gear. 🙌
Great skirts!
Happy New Year from New Zealand. Your skirts are all lovely, but I have to agree with you that the blue one looks super snuggly, love your style and sewing. Keep them coming please.
Thank you and happy new year to you too! The blue one really is the coziest. :)
I'm a new subscriber and I just love your channel. Your work is lovely. You are so talented and your videos are so warm and friendly. It's like visiting with a friend each time I watch your content. All 3 skirts turned out beautifully!
Thank you so much! You're so sweet!
PNW Sister! I'm in Oregon, and yeah, snow isn't a common thing outside the mountains. But the coastal storms are always beautiful
See, tucked into the Puget Sound, we don't even get coastal storms. But yeah, I think I need to go to the mountains for some snow pretty soon.
Love your fur babies and the skirts look great. All the best for 2021 from New Zealand
Thank you so much! :)
My favorite is the blue too. Pretty as a picture! I have some plumb wool plaid- I think a skirt may e made of it!1
I also made two plaid flannel shirts - yes it is a NW affinity to apricate a good plaid
Thank you! The plum wool sounds lovely!
The blue windowpane is my favorite! I admire you making these without a pattern. I am stuck on patterns. ☺ love your 2 little helpers too.
Plaid is wonderful, can never have enough of it. Your skirts tuned out great. I'm going to make one from an old tablecloth.
Such pretty skirts and each with its own personality
Thank you!
So lovely. I am still terrified of working with plaids. This video has helped inspire me.
I love all of the skirts they came out beautiful! My favorite one is the blue 🥰
very nice, as wholesome as ever.
I could do with some winter skirts, m,ust remember to check plaids when browsing :D
Thank you! And yes - get all the plaids!
Love all 3
Thanks!
All of the skirts look awesome, but the blue and the buffalo plaid are my favorite! Dora just thought you needed a fabric weight!
Thank you! She does make a good fabric weight. :)
On the navy Plaid skirt might want a pocket facing on bottom layer of the back inside pocketing in the navy plaid. You are so talented and courageous , you inspire me.
Those are some great skirts. I love wearing skirts but usually don’t in the winter as I get so cold. It never occurred to me to wear a petticoat.
To be fair, it doesn't get super cold in the PNW, so I don't know if I would keep wearing them if it got really freezing here, but they work well even into the 30 degree range, as long as you've got a nice pair of tights! (and the petticoat does help!)
Love your skirts. Haven’t made a skirt in years. Your video makes me want to jump in and make my own skirts
Thank you - you totally should! Super quick projects that are very rewarding. :)
I’m so glad I found your channel! I’ve been making a ton of skirts since Halloween, but I’m fairly new to sewing and they aren’t tuning out exactly how I picture. I also couldn’t really find someone my size(with my aesthetic) on youtube to watch video tutorials for help and YT just recommend me your channel! I’m excited to learn some new things that I can apply to my skirt making!
Welcome! I'm glad you found me, and I hope your future skirt projects turn out just as you picture them!
i just got the green version of that blue plaid, i am not sure how itll be a skirt but it sure will be!
Exciting! Good luck with your skirt!
These came out beautifully! I wish I looked as good in skirts as you do; these are wonderful additions to your wardrobe!
Thank you so much!
What pretty skirts! :D
Thank you!
@@LadyRebeccaFashions You're welcome! :D
Skirts look great!
Love! Thanks for the inspiration
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
Dora! ❤️❤️❤️
I love these! I'd like to possibly try making one or more. However, they really do look best with the petticoat for added shape. What kind of petticoat do you wear with your circle and pleated skirts? Did you make it or purchase it somewhere?
Thank you! I wear a Malco modes tea-length petticoat with mine. I do find that it has to soften a bit when it's brand new. In my Christmas dress video, I'm wearing the new one, whereas with these, I'm wearing a much older one. This is the one: www.amazon.com/dp/B005UN7XBG/?tag=aiponsite-20&linkCode=ic5&ascsubtag=amzn1.infl.us.product&creativeASIN=B005UN7XBG&ref=exp_ladyrebeccafashions_dp_vv_d
Beautifully done sweetie! I absolutely love the blue one. It looks so cozy and comfy. And loved the cameos from Lion and Dora. BTW, what kind of tea were you drinking?
Thank you! I was drinking Yogi vanilla peppermint tea here - it's a nice calming decaf one.
Little curious about the hem on the green skirt being deeper in the front, so the back isn't shorter. Its quite a dilemma to scoop out the front waist, and add a little up the back CB waist before adding waistband and lose the beautiful horizontal line of plaid.
I guess it depends if you intend to tuck in your blouse or not and the focal point even waist or even hem.
I always kind of figure that, no matter what, if your skirt is gored at all, by the time you get to the hem, your plaid isn't going to look exactly horizontal anyway.
I love these skirts! Would you happen to have a video on making the crinoline you wear with this style ?
Thanks! I honestly don't like to make my own crinolines, as I've done it a few times and they never turn out quite right. This one was from Malco Modes, but unfortunately they changed manufacturers a couple years ago, and the new ones are no good.
@@LadyRebeccaFashions thanks. I was unsure if you made your own
Your skirts are beautiful. You did a great job. Happy New Year. God bless.
Thank you! Happy new year to you too!
Happy New year to you and your furbabys, love the new skirts, you must have nearly all your clothes handmade by now,a tour of your wardrobe would be interesting if it's not too intrusive,
Thank you, and happy new year to you too! I definitely have a lot of handmade skirts, but most of the rest of my wardrobe is thrifted. That might be a fun idea for a video, though! :)
I mean, if you really want snow you can head for the mountains; but honestly the passes scare me in summer. I don't think I'd brave them in winter!
Yeah, I don't have enough winter driving skills to drive up there in the winter. It's tempting to go as far as I can and pull off the first time I see snow, though! lol
Lion footage always appreciated
He is happy to oblige! :)
I love these outfits but I do love your dog lion even more. I had one very similar who at 14 passed in May. She was called Bunny and there was not a bit of her hanging the right way. Bushy eyebrows, moustache and beard. I miss her so much so it is so nice seeing lion in your videos.. Happy New year love and virtual hugs and can't wait for the next video xxx
Aww, I'm so sorry to hear about your pupper. I will make sure to include lots of Lion in my videos for you! :)
@@LadyRebeccaFashions thank you, im trying to work out how to send you a picture of her xxx
I love your plaid blouse. What pattern did you use?
It's my Christmas dress! I have a video on it here: ruclips.net/video/lTdfT7UZ4PI/видео.html
I so enjoy your videos. I have a question. Although I have been sewing for a while but never really knew some of the sewing terms. My question is why do you and when do you hang an item because of the hem?
Fabric stretches on the bias, so if you have a skirt that flares out quite a bit, then you're working with a fair amount of bias fabric. In general, I would say anything that has more than about a 4-5" difference in width (of each piece) from waist to hem should be hung out overnight to let that bias stretch. I hope that makes sense?
@@LadyRebeccaFashions thank you. Yes you made a lot of sense. Keep up the good work!
I highly approve kitty content
Dora is happy to oblige! :)
Would have been nice to see more of the layout and matching to show to my 4H student. And a little less talk.
I would love to make skirts that are fitted, but I'm currently going through a lot of weight fluctuation, is it possible for you to show what are ways I(or anyone) can make skirts that look good/fit well that can grow or shrink with me as needed, that don't necessarily rely on elastic?
I would say for an option other than elastic, maybe try doing it 18th c style, where they tie on the sides.
All pockets should be multi-functional, right? Bath tub, seat, phone holder... Although it seems like Supervisor Dora prefers to micro-manage your projects, checking your work at every step, even making a chair inspection
Feline supervision is a necessity. Is it Dora or Adora?
Thank you! It's Dora, though technically, that's short for Nymphadora. :)
What are you using under the skirt? Do you have a video making it?
I swear by the Malco Modes petticoats: amzn.to/3kl5aXg
Do you accommodate the difference in skirt length from front to back hemline? I am 1 1/2 to 2 inches shorter from waist to floor in the front than I am in the back. Do you shorten your skirts in front, or do you make them the same length all the way around?
To be honest, I haven't found an issue with it in mid-calf skirts like these (and yet, I always wind up making my historical stuff longer in back than in front...)
@@LadyRebeccaFashions Thank you for the reply. I will be making floor length skirts. I guess I will make the length different. Otherwise, they'll be shorter in back.

The Pacific Northwest should just be renamed The Pacific Plaidwest
Out of curiosity, where in the PNW?
About 30 mins south of Seattle.
Are you wearing leggings, tights, or stockings underneath? I love skirts, but can't show my legs uncovered.
I personally live in knee-high wool socks all winter because my feet get super cold. They pair great with skirts because everything is covered and I'm nice and warm as long as my skirt hem is lower than the tops of my socks.
I wear tights with them. My favorites are the black super opaque 120 denier tights from Target. Those things are soooo comfortable. For nude tights, I prefer the Body Wrappers plus size tights.
I just found this video about making long opera gloves and remembered that you were looking for gloves to fit up your arms etc.

Hopes this works xx
Me, a Finn: wait, that is how plaid is pronounced? I thought it was said like plain.
Me too! I felt relief to finally know how to say it!
