As a hobby DJ doing a few house parties a year these are things I suggest: 1. If you've never DJed before, start with buying just a dj controller (like DDJ-400 or FLX4). If you already own any type of speakers, use those and find good quality sources to rip. This is to check if you truely like DJing or if it's just one of those sort term things you'll waste way too much money on. 2. If you like it, buy better speakers (preferably studio monitors). You can either upgrade your song quality by getting a subscription to a DJ pool, or you buy audio enhancing/analyzing software like Platinum Notes 4 and Mixed in Key (this is what I did). Remember to use good quality rip sources otherwise take a subscription. 3. If you enjoy DJing even more now and you want to try small parties/venues, decide whether you want to use the same speakers or upgrade to PA speakers (monitors are better for close range small groups and PA to really go LOUD!). I upgraded to a big PA and subwoofer combo for parties. I also bought a bluetooth adapter in case I don't want to DJ. Even if you're a bit of an audiophile like me, you'll never hear the difference between quality rips and the official sources unless you use insanely expensive speakers. A one-time purchase of audio enhancing software in combination with being able to rip anything on the internet was worth way more to me than getting a DJ pool subscription that does not include everything I search for. This is just from my own experience but consider the choices. Best of luck😁

I get why auto-sync is a thing. Perhaps you first want to learn mixing and care about beatmatching later. Perhaps you want to save the time you would use for beatmatching and use it for something else like playing a drum machine or whatever. And I would also get it if that smart fader would just make the transition without syncing the track's tempo together. Perhaps you decided to learn beatmatching first and mixing later. But syncing the tracks AND having a one-fader transition? At that point, the user (not DJ, user) isn't doing anything themself anymore. That's not a feature for a beginner DJ, that's a feature for someone who wants to pretend to be a DJ. It doesn't help you with a flatter learning curve, it just completely saves you from learning anything. You wouldn't learn much less DJing if you would do it with Spotify.
I really love this review because it’s honest and forthcoming with information that you usually don’t find out until after you buy the controller I think that the difference between software is was deliberate but I am hoping they change that but that being said I do think this is a pretty good controller excellent for that price range I just would have liked to have seen them try it with Serato pro
I really think that this gimmicky new features are bad for beginners, don’t take me wrong, they are great and sure they make transitions and stuff way easier for beginners, but they ain’t learning to do them for real because it’s the software doing it for them and the general idea it’s that this type of hardware be your gateway in the path to play with cdjs, and if that is the case you will be completely lost when using them because you will not find this easy way of doing things. This actually happened to me going from numark controller to an FLX-6 and then trading to play on cdjs, of course most of it is the same, but if you get use to this gimmick it’s going to be really hard to use professional equipment in the future. It’s just a personal opinion, I think the 400 is a great peace of equipment and so is this, but yes, my advice is to learn djing the old school way soy then you don’t get caught off guard.
If you want to hear the opinion of an old man who has already been playing in bars and clubs for 30 years and has not been left behind technologically and you also like the various technical tricks, I have only one thing to tell you, it will not raise your level in the set more expensive pioneer , or what else .. You have to listen to a lot, a lot of music, even music that you don't like, you have to have an opinion ... For me, too, most of the tricks you can do are not just for once in a while set, if you constantly do technique and tricks during the set, you will tire the ears of those who listen to you, learn to flow in the set, raise your technique by playing without synchronization and I tell you again, the good dj has listened to 20 000 to 30 000 albums.
I like how he starts saying that this is a great entry controller for people agnostic of their software- then only lists recordbox and Serato as if it’s the entire universe. There’s dozens of us on VDJ and Traktor! Dozens…! But in all seriousness this looks like a cool controller.
@@Crossfader - "Stood the test of time" I mean, let's be real though, the DDJ-400 was released in June of 2018 and was produced by Pioneer up until January 2021...so it was in production for 2 1/2 years. It is a great controller but it really isn't that old.
Works also great with the djay pro android version ( purchased app ). The only downside is that when someone calls or app you it disturbs the mixing session. First thing you gonna have to do is connecting it to windows on your pc in order to get it working and update the firmware if its need to. I use Google pixel 7 and it works pretty proper. It makes me so happy 😁
I too got one yesterday & using an android tab, but I'm having trouble with my tabs battery as it drains fast, I tried powering it up by a samsung charger but it dint work. Any idea bro? How do you power up your ffx4?
FLX4 is just a DDJ400 in a prettier case. Could have been better but I see why Pioneer went this way, trying to give people who have no interest in really learning to DJ but want to be able to mix at home or at a small party and still sound good. Not everyone wants to play in a club, moving to CDJs isn't everyone's goal. Many people just want to play music for parties or as a bit of fun. For that purpose such features are ideal. Still, I think seeing some basic things like split cue, bigger jogs, more/better outputs, truly independent fx for each channel would have been better. Pros/Cons/Mehs: * The color effects knob, meh, it's fine as an 'upgrade' to the solid LED color that the DDJ400 has for it's pads but is a weak selling point. * USB-C is a big Pro. Welcome to the 21st Century, Pioneer. That USB-B system was very 1990's tech, and so odd concidering the DDJ-400 was released in 2018. * It can be connected to a phone or tablet. This is good for those who can't afford a laptop or just want to use their Phone or tablet. Great for bedroom DJs, or those just DJing a small party. Once you get to paid gigs, you'll want to be using a laptop and this controller or a stand-alone DJ controller. * It can charge a phone with passthrough USB-C while you run Serato/Rekordbox off your laptop. Ok. Never had a problem with charging my phone while in the car headed to a gig or charging while DJing. Convience factor, yes. Selling point, probably not. * The mic input routed via the USB to the computer is clutch for those who stream or do audio out from their PC to the speakers. Your mic will now be audible on streams (or recordings) without needing an extra mixer to incorporate it like you did with the DDJ-400. * Smart CFX gimmicky but has it's place. Changing the LP/HP Filter knob into a one-knob macro FX. Again, fine for the bedroom rockers and those who want to impress their friends at a party. Doesn't have to be used so those wanting to learn to go pro are not forced to use it. * The 'smart' cross-fader, is fine, has it's place for those not looking to learn how to DJ, just want to mix music at a small party or in the bedroom. Start your new song playing, bring the crossfader across. It syncs the tracks, alters the BPM so both tracks match and moves the BPM from the old track’s to the new one’s as you move it across. At the same time, it drops the bass out on the old track, and for good measure, throws in a bit of echo as the old track disappears. (Perfect for mixing while drunk at a party or wedding too!) Can be turned on or off so scratch DJs still can learn on this controller. Overall, not bad. It took the best of the DDJ-200, the solid features of the DDJ-400, the best of the FLX6 without going full FLX6. Having RB+Serato, as well as USB-C power, is very welcomed.
Do you think this is a good option for me if I’m just looking to get into the field? I really have no clue what I want to do down the road, but I love music and the idea of blending it and adding your own effects really excited me. To be honest I have no clue what most of the specs and pros/cons you mentioned mean as I have 0 DJ experience. I’m looking to buy a controller soon and am excited to start!
give me 50% larger rgb pads, faders and motorised jogs with display and you've got yourself a customer coming up from ddj-rb2. Hopefully they update the flx6 or ddj800 sooner than later.
I wish some of these beginner consoles would let you plug in vinyl decks. Love some of these new features but without the decks input it's a deal breaker for me. The price is amazing though for all the features.
I think it’s a lot more than a “beginner” unit tbh it looks very useful for a pro who just wants a prep machine or something travel friendly wish these reviews would stop insisting on making out there only for beginners.
I started off my DJing hobby over two decades ago with Pioneer CDJ-500S CD decks and DJM-300 mixer (because I had a ton of CD singles). I soon transferred fully to vinyl on a pair of Technics 1210s (because it was hard to find full length mixes of many tracks, I did keep the same mixer). Even though the DJM-300 had BPM counters on them, I never used them, I learned to mix the old school way - by ear, I prefer it. Managed to play a few bars (even had a Friday night "residency" at one for a while) the local club a few times and a ton of house parties and weddings. I got a job in America so had to leave all my DJ equipment and records behind (would have cost FAR too much to ship it all). I just bought a Pioneer DJ DDJ-FLX4 to get back into it (yet to turn up) looking forward to it, although I have to say, the user interface for Rekordbox is fugly as sin, it could be SO much better, and the fact you need to buy a subscription for all the features is a major L, I'll just be using it for basic mixing I reckon.
Great overview, thanks. I can't for the life of me work out how to record my sets using a Zoom recorder (h4essentials). I've tried: > Using a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable from the headphone port on my Mac, to the “Line In” on the Zoom recorder. No signal detected. (I know the headphone port is enabled and working, because I’m using it to route through an amplifier too). >Using a usb-c cable from my Mac to the Zoom and setting the Zoom for Audio I/F and REC. (Zoom confirms “USB Data Okay", but no signal is detected. (I have not tried RCA outputs from the ‘Master’ output on the FLX4 (to TRS inputs on the Zoom) because I am using the ‘Master’ output on the FLX4 to my powered monitors). What am I missing? Any help appreciated - thank you.
Are these controls knobs spaced apart for people with bigger hands? Im willing to go up a level? beginner DJ but want one that lasts me few months which is the next one you'd suggest? or anyone?
I have this device, I use it with an amplifier. The system cuts off the sound after 3-4 tracks, I changed the amplifier but the sound cuts out again. why doing this?
Just a question , do you think / know if the new smart color affects could be mapped to djm 900 of 850 mixers ? Cheers , thx for the review . Keep up the good works !
From 120 bpm ... to ... 84 bpm ???? .... talk about extreme, eh ? lol Thanks for the review .. it's an impressive list of upgrades to the DDJ400 for sure. Once they get it to world with DJayPro they will sell even more, I imagine.
Off-topic: None of the used gear at my local store is compatible with Rekordbox or Mixxx. No matter the brand (Pioneer, Numark, Hercules, Behringer). Coming from music production software, this is so weird to me: MIDI keyboards are mostly plug & play, whether your DAW costs $0 or $2000. I just want to pick up a controller & some low-priced _non-subscription_ software, and start practicing before I get carried away on gear. Is that too much to ask for in 2022? Am _I_ the crazy one? Should I just shut up and be thankful not to be budgeting for a vinyl rig & records? This whole compatibility thing seems to be a racket, just like the software for sewing/embroidery machines. 😾
You can program most controllers to work with mixxx, and virtual DJ as well. VDJ probably has the largest compatibility in the market, usually someone has already made a template for whatever kit you're trying to use. I mean, I've used an apc40, an mpd, several mixtracks, an lpd, midi fighter... All sorts of weird stuff, and there's always a template pre made for it lol. Even stuff that says "only for serato/rekordbox/etc" has VDJ templates!
I have a great idea for the next ddj flx doing 2 channels dj controller that have the ability to control in 2 channels more with the effects of the pioneer djm 900 mixer and smart mixer lead and the ability to connecting to Serato and Rekordbox and I think that this is very good idea for a powerful dj controller than ddj rr and the sr and the sr2 what you think?

It’s just a personal opinion, I think the 400 is a great peace of equipment and so is this, but yes, my advice is to learn djing the old school way soy then you don’t get caught off guard.
Dose the smart fader work on serato pro?
Was this a review or a dj'ing lesson?? Because honestly, as someone who really wants to learn how to dj, this has been so insightful! 😃😃😃 Thank you 😅
Can we use it on other DAWs for example Ableton?
I like how he starts saying that this is a great entry controller for people agnostic of their software- then only lists recordbox and Serato as if it’s the entire universe.
There’s dozens of us on VDJ and Traktor! Dozens…!
But in all seriousness this looks like a cool controller.
So pioneer did what Apple does. Release the same thing lol.
Made used DDJ400's cheaper, I guess :D
Wow. I kind of wish I'd waited for this instead of getting the DDJ 400. It looks like it has some great features and updates on it.
It does, however, don't be disheartened about having the DDJ-400. Still a great choice that has stood the test of time!
@@Crossfader Absolutely! The DDJ 400 is still fantastic and more than enough for my needs👍 Just need more free time to practice on it
@@Crossfader - "Stood the test of time" I mean, let's be real though, the DDJ-400 was released in June of 2018 and was produced by Pioneer up until January 2021...so it was in production for 2 1/2 years.
Pros/Cons/Mehs:
* The color effects knob, meh, it's fine as an 'upgrade' to the solid LED color that the DDJ400 has for it's pads but is a weak selling point.
I think that the ddj 400 looks better
@@C0NFUZED_158 Yeah this controller looks like tech gadget while DDJ 400 seems professional (I talk about looks lol)
FLX4 has DDJ-400 features + compatibility with Serato + compatibility with smartphones.
I’m looking to buy a controller soon and am excited to start!
i have farted constantly while watching this video
Great review Jamie! I appreciate you taking the time to explain everything so thoroughly!
My pleasure!
This motivated me to start my journey 🤟🏽
If were looking to eventually do clubs or festivals should I learn without all the smart buttons?
Can we do VDJing on ddj flx 4 connected to laptop?
give me 50% larger rgb pads, faders and motorised jogs with display and you've got yourself a customer coming up from ddj-rb2. Hopefully they update the flx6 or ddj800 sooner than later.
Do I get a rekordbox license key with this dj controller?
I wish some of these beginner consoles would let you plug in vinyl decks. Love some of these new features but without the decks input it's a deal breaker for me. The price is amazing though for all the features.
But its hard to move on if everything is done for you
I’ve had the flx6 for a year and the only complain I have is the jog wheels are rough and bumpy because it has plastic gears inside
Yeah we feel that too on our's. 😔
il y a pas mieux que denon dj prime 4 !!!!
I like the way you explain everything makes it much easier to learn how to use the control thank you keep up the good work 👍
Thanks. We’re glad you enjoy the explanations!
Hey! Thanks for the review. One question, does it come with a rekordbox license?
Toys R Us
I think it’s a lot more than a “beginner” unit tbh it looks very useful for a pro who just wants a prep machine or something travel friendly wish these reviews would stop insisting on making out there only for beginners.
Tirando o fato da numark Platinum FX não vir com serato pro acho que a numark e a melhor opção nessa faixa de preço
Amazing review! Has the "smart-fader" been fixed in Serato?
I just bought a Pioneer DJ DDJ-FLX4 to get back into it (yet to turn up) looking forward to it, although I have to say, the user interface for Rekordbox is fugly as sin, it could be SO much better, and the fact you need to buy a subscription for all the features is a major L, I'll just be using it for basic mixing I reckon.
im pretty sure with buying a Pioneer ddj you get the full acces to recordbox and have all the features already! :)
@@michaellangham1556 is it full version of the app or just basic one/demo/trial?

Great overview, thanks. I can't for the life of me work out how to record my sets using a Zoom recorder (h4essentials). I've tried:
> Using a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable from the headphone port on my Mac, to the “Line In” on the Zoom recorder.
What means „in ADJ“ and „out ADJ“?
Loop in/out adjustment I suppose
thx nice video, price is right, got me thinking,
Damn, I didn't know about that saved loop feaure, thanks!
If you use sync you can do the smart fade stuff “manually” pretty easily
Are these controls knobs spaced apart for people with bigger hands? Im willing to go up a level? beginner DJ but want one that lasts me few months which is the next one you'd suggest? or anyone?
Jamie’s still rocking’ his lockdown locks.
Just got one recently. Love it ❤ Great breakdown. This was very helpful!
Touch and feel wise idk what beats the Numark NS7II
Ah yes lets buy a unit that doesnt show us how to do things, it just does it for us AMAZING.....come on.
It seems Pioneer DJ already removed the DDJ-400 from their website for this one.
Yup, it will be replacing it.
This looks great for DDJ 400 replacement but the important question is when will this be available? None of the stores have it.
It’s not released yet . It’s available for pre order in some online retailers . Will start shipping out in 2023
We heard from Pioneer DJ that it would be available from the launch. Hope it's not 2023!
Why are the LEDs so dim? DDJ400 looks way better imo
What laptops would you recommend using to link to the controller?
I've done the transactions it has been deducted from my ton wallet... but is not reflecting in my x empire.
I have this device, I use it with an amplifier. The system cuts off the sound after 3-4 tracks, I changed the amplifier but the sound cuts out again. why doing this?
IDK, I like my DDJ-400 pretty well, but the FLX4 seems like a great into controller aswell
what's the step up from here?
has the smart fader been fixed in serato yet?
Don’t spend almost $400 for this flex 4 is to Spence get the 6 Better believe me don’t get it 👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽

How did you compare to Roland DJ202? Price is for both is similiar
Just a question , do you think / know if the new smart color affects could be mapped to djm 900 of 850 mixers ?
Cheers , thx for the review .
Keep up the good works !

From 120 bpm ... to ... 84 bpm ???? .... talk about extreme, eh ? lol
Thanks for the review .. it's an impressive list of upgrades to the DDJ400 for sure.

Once I found out about the pass through charge feature I was sold and bought it fast lol.
I'm getting one today after this video thanks for the explanation

This smart fader thing is kinda weird, but I think it could be useful to more versatile DJ's on pop music, hyperpop or trap dj sets
