    This was one of Thomas Hearns career defining wins. He was late in his career and he beat a undefeated young very good Olympic medalist boxer. Hearns was thought to be on the down side of his career by this time .He really didn’t have a good track record at that time in big fights . Excellent win.

    Virgil Hill was one of Hearns' best victories- he was a perfect 30-0 coming into the bout and 10 consecutive title defenses. Hill would go on to be 43-1 until his losses began to pile up against names like Dariusz Michalczewski and Roy Jones Jr. After his loss against Hearns, he would go on to reclaim a Light Heavyweight title and defend it another 10x.
    Hearns may be the lowest ranked of the Fab 4, but it's more of a testament to the quality of boxers that Leonard, Hagler, and Duran were and not a knock on how good Hearns was. He won a Welterweight title against Pipino Cuevas who defended his belt 11x, won a Light Middleweight belt against an All Time Great in Wilfredo Benitez (who had just completely out-classed Duran in his previous bout), KO'd Duran, and should most definitely have won against Leonard in their rematch. Being the first 5 weight world champion, it's no wonder why Hearns is considered one of the best of the last 50 years.

    Ahhh, it's great and also painful to watch this...I'm the same age as Tommy (62 years old now) and I SO remember this fight with much trepidation. Watching him tear down a much younger Virgil Hill with skills from his younger days made me beam with pride!!! He really should have ended it after this fight, but, my god he was only 32 years old!!! I look back at myself at 32 and think that I had a few more prime years but Tommy was already definitely outside of his best at this point. It just kills me to think that just 10 years earlier, he was a killer on the welterweight and junior-middleweight scene and now, in 1991, everyone was calling for his retirement!

      almost all of these fighters keep fighting until no one will pay them enough to warrant training/getting back into shape. Thus, they almost all have some late career pummelings, and then they can no longer make the 6 figure payday, and that's it. A handful, like Hagler, truly call it a day while still sharp.

      Yeah well, he was 6'2, had huge reach and height advantages, had Steward, and was able to move up "naturally". SRL had to fatten himself up, sacrifice Speed and Stamina, and even though he was dropped twice in their 2nd fight, somehow made Tommy look as if just one more Punch would take him completely OUT. It's funny how Ray Leonard even with the knockdowns still took Tommy's punches better than Tommy took his. This is why the judges scored the way they did most likely. If Ray had just a tad more cardio, he would've ko'd Tommy again. That doesn't make it right for them to take it just because of Hearn's advantages but that's what they did.

    Hearns could have been regarded as even being better than he was if his career had taken place 10 years earlier, or 10 years later. His legacy will forever live in the shadows of Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvin Hagler. Both of these fighters were just better enough to be considered in a higher, elite class. I know many people believe that Hearns won the 2nd Leonard/Hearns fight, but I believe Hearns was lucky to come away with a draw. While Hearns scored two knock downs, they were flash knock downs and Leonard wasn't really hurt. On the other hand, Leonard had Hearns out on his feet in both the 5th and 12th rounds. There's no way Hearns was ever going to beat Hagler, he simply didn't have the stamina to go 12 or 15 rounds with Hagler. Hearns' losses to Barkley were freakish. Just gotta chock those fights up to bad luck, and Barkley being tougher than nails...

    • @cade9173
      @cade9173 2 года назад +6

      To say Tommy was the one who was lucky to get a draw in the Leonard rematch is just delusional 😂 He beat Sugar Ray soundly in that fight. It doesn’t matter if the knockdowns were “flash knockdowns” (which they really weren’t, maybe the first one but definitely not the second one) they still count as knockdowns on the scorecards. Leonard got saved with those bullshit 10-8 rounds in the 5th and 12th which really weren’t big enough rounds to be scored the same as Hearns knockdowns. Hearns controlled the entire fight and he deserved to win. Hearns and Leonard are practically equal and I feel like you can rank either fighter over the other and there shouldn’t be a big argument. Hagler however is better than both in my opinion. I agree Hearns was probably never gonna beat Hagler in any scenario

    Hearns is defferent from this fight, he was only 32, his speed and quickness are gone, when he fought, Leonard, duran and hagler, he was too strong and fast

    Is it not against the rules to pull down the opponent's head before punching an uppercut? T. Hearns did it in 6th round.

    ウェルターからライトヘビー迄チャンピオンになったのはハーンズとレナードしかいないね‼️その後のボクサーで誰もなし得ない偉業。何故2人が歴史的ボクサーとして霞んでるのか?理由が聞きたい

    I think Hearns and Leonard were the best of those 4. I mean they both won five titles. And Hearns 6. With Hagler he broke his right hand and he hurt Hagler which 99 percent couldn't do. If still had that right fight could've been different. It's with Barkley he was kinda off. Lacked his usual self in both fights. With Hill he beat a masterful boxer and beat him at his own game!

    The difference in the ferocity of the punches between them is night and day.. Hearns powerful and snapping, while Hill throws more they are powder puff punches. No power at all…

    Hill fought the wrong fight. Way too cautious. He should have gone for the ko from round one. That would be his best chance to win.

    virgil was a good fighter, but in need for a big payday, in those days, hearns people and the media were strong, some people rumored, the fight was fixed to give hearns his last title.

    Ferdie Pacheco...just awful. Stammering...halting...stuttering and mixing tenses saying bizarre things. I don't know how he had such a long career with NBC and Showtime. I remember the first Tyson/Holyfield fight when Evander staggered Mike in the eighth round "...he making...a whole...phalanx of...a cardiacs..." Say what Ferd?

      @@active.7universal Maybe you're right...stammering...stuttering etc. does produce lots of spit! You can't be serious that he's even an adequate color man for boxing broadcasts. I recently watched Ramirez-Rosario II, an NBC network Sportsworld show video, and he transposed the fighter's names dozens of times. He is much worse than his baseline when he gets excited. A real mess of a broadcaster. I also watched him be interviewed in the documentary "Ghosts of Manila" where he agreed with Ali that Joe Frazier was stupid and did look like a gorilla. How can you defend this a-hole?
