Super work John Ross. Honesy, from the closeness of your shave, it looks like you are there getting the job done at 6 am before going to Church. Whetever - looking really good. Hope you are documenting absolutely everything, and pit into the ring binder for the new owner. But . . . one final thing. Jonny is still my hero!
I love this era of cars. My first car was a '79 Ford Fiesta. After buying it my dad and I went to some local junkyards for little odds and ends. Ended up finding an imported German left-hand drive Fiesta XR2. We raided that car for every performance part we could. We installed the parts onto my car and I had a good, working clone XR2. Total price for the car and all of the XR2 parts was a whopping $900.00! Fun car for 1 1/2 years until I got t-boned. That XR2 was the Ford version of the GTI. Awh what simple fun for 80's hot hatches.
Great memories. I had the 1983 Rabbit GTI in white with blue interior. That was the first year the GTI model was introduced in the US. What a car. It is the only car that I wish I never sold. The 1983 Rabbit GTI came in white, black, red and silver with either a blue or red interior.
What a beautiful car! I remember test-driving a Rabbit back in the early 80s (it was a diesel) and was still fun to drive. Johnny reminds me of my best friend back then... if whatever automotive project we were working on didn't run right, he used to say, "Get a bigger hammer!"
Talk about memory lane. I held the flashlight for my dad, for the first time, on a black GTI. Coincidentally, it was also the first time my Dad cursed in front of me while working on something. So many memories with that car.
How cool for the VW. Rabbit was my first experience with front wheel drive. My buddy had one. We had a pretty significant snow, 8 or 9 inches. He convinced me to bag work and we headed from the Hershey area to the Poconos to ski. The little thing was amazing in the snow. Developed a love for them. A Jetta, a Sirocco and two Beetles. Bought them in less than pristine shape and redid them. Wish I had kept them 20 years.
I Love the VW Rabbits! My first car was a 1975 2dr manual 4spd Red rabbit white interior with a 32/36 carb upgrade. huge chain and c-clamp holding up the passenger side engine mount and the engine and the transmission moved heavily with every shift and I loved it!I also had a 1980 Cabriolet same issues must be my heavy foot! My Mothers's 1982 Dodge Omni had some of the same VW parts!.
I’m impressed….those new gas cans are designed to spill fuel everywhere when ever you use one!👍👍 there is also a little screen in the inlet pipe to the cis block that can clog and cause issues in some of those cis systems.
@@Piston206 So tough to even guess. One sold for about $ 20 K earlier this year. It wasn't nearly as nice as this one, but it only had 67 K miles. One sold for over $90 K recently according to Hagerty. But that one must have been some 5K miles unicorn. My guess for this one would be in the 30's, and the buyer will turn a nice profit in a few years.
As a youngster, i was in love with these, and the Scirraco(?)…..such a beautiful little piece of history. Was hoping to get a little run to Mexico with it, but understand why it didn’t …
Very tight space in the engine bay of the LAMBO. That must have been a PITA . It looks clean and neat. I have to say those super cars have engines that look like fine art from the top, but underneath it is a mechanics nightmare. A while back you used a cleaning system on a Camaro for the engine. I thought you put something in the fuel to clean the injectors, I was wondering if it would have worked on the VW? Awesome content and tapping the injectors...solid !
Nice! Wish I could've bought it! Love ❤️ VW had numerous ones but I'll mention my favorite ones: 1985 GTI 8V 1997 PASSAT 12V VR6 2001 GTI 12V VR6 2004 R32 24V VR6, which I lost to flood 😢.
It's remarkable how much that yellow Ferrari convertible in the background resembles the old late 90s era Nissan 300zx. I bet the 300zx is much cheaper to own and drive.
It'll also cause vapor lock in summer ... no hot start either. I had a 1980 that I limped home by putting a jumper in the fuel pump relay socket and lifting the plate in the air box until I could hear fuel coming out of the injectors before cranking it.
My dad bought me this car in 91 or 92- can't remember. So it was 7 or 8 years old when I got it. It was a nice car to drive for sure - I drove it ALLLL over the Colorado Rockies. The paint job on mine did not look as shiny and nice as this but interior was exactly the same. Didn't know what I had back then or I would have held onto it. Isn't that the way it always goes?
I replaced all four of my gas tanks (cans) with bright yellow flexible filler necks. They came with breathers also to add. I can finally fill up lawn mowers and cars without spilling a drop.
Great looking car JR. Saw the obit and news report for your friend. Tragic loss, 32 is so young to die. That green Lambo was tore up. He could have been driving a non exotic and have had a wreck too. JR and all, be safe behind the wheel.
The compression ratio was 10:1 not 8.5 as you stated. TECHRON is the Bosch CIS friend, better than BG. Keep running TECHRON through the system regularly. Valve adjustments should also be checked at some point.
I had a failure of the bottom crankshaft sprocket on my 1986 Mk2 Golf GTI many years ago. Lets just say the engine needed a top end because valves were bent in the process of coming out of time.
I would replace the injectors and seals, there cheap and easy to install. Also there is a plastic filter you can clean in the gas tank by removing the fuel guage sender and clean that as well
Check the fuel pump relay, had a early Rabbit and it was in the shop a few times before it was corrected, just a failed relay, it would run fine then who knows why or what would stall and not start then maybe the next day run again with out any issues….
Many older Ford cars needed a good tap, with a hammer, on the starter motor to get going. This is not a new science, lol 😂! Great job, thanks. RickGTI….. 🌴
I drive a 94 Rover 414 I've converted to a 1.8 and if it's sat for any length of time you have to tap the injectors in a very similar way to get it to start 😂 good work
Where did you order the larger size fuel filter? Everyone seems to just carry the smaller one. Thank you! By the way, will run way better on premium. That car is worth 42K in that condition. I hope the original owner knows that.
I so wanted one of those. But alas, I had my classic 1.6 powered Rabbit four door. Got me through college, several trips to everywhere and anywhere. I saw one the other day, forgot how freaking small they were. The biggest problem with them at this age is rust in critical supports. Sad, so would love to re-live that time again.
Blame the Green movement. It's environmentally unsafe to be able to fill your car from a gas can when you unexpectedly run out of gas. You're supposed to have it towed to a dealer and then inspected to make sure it's safe to fill the tank again. I think you're even supposed to fill it with the special dealership only gas.
I had a 1977 Audi Fox wagon when I was 16, it was my parents car handed down to us kids. Same or very similar engine. I took it up past 90 mph and it started stuttering. Best I could tell was that I had picked up crud from the gas tank. I was so worried to take it home like that, so I went to the gas station and put two bottles of octane booster and a bottle of fuel treatment and it cleaned right up. That car ran past 150k miles before rust took it off the road.
Should have yanked the injectors (with the right tool) and pushed the airflow meter upward and watch the spray pattern of the injectors, this would also self clean them. I worked on these for many years from 1985 on.
I used to have one 1983 gti rabbit! Paid $50 dollars in 2001 ! My brother had bought it and couldn’t find the electrical gremlin and sold it to me me for a carton of smokes and a case of beer!
I fixed my girlfriends Jetta of a similar vintage with a hammer. They only thing it couldn't fix eventually with the voltage regulator which was the final piece to making it a reliable DD
Look how happy Johnny is working on something that easy!!! He was able to work on something without a computer in his hand! 😂
Sorry about your friend passing JR. Hope the event goes well and awesome work on the Rabbit.
Casually flipping from barn find GTI to Lambo you are truly one of us!:) Sorry for your loss JR

Get a racing gas can@@WatchJRGo
@@theMick52 i bought a new gas can, and replaced the garbage nozzle with a menards generic nozzle before first use. new ones suck.
I'm not surprised the GTI sold before it ever hit the auction site.

If you are speaking of Monty, Jerrod's dad, I can vouch he knows his stuff. He once made a rabbit diesel truck, a turbo diesel.
The coolest car in Jonny's shop!!!
I owned a VW Rabbit GTI the same color, bought back memories. I liked that car very much.

Run a can of Techron in a tank full of gas. It will clean out any sticky internal parts.
We use BG 44K but yeah, it'll clean up 💯
Ah… the fuel pump checkvalve… my old nemesis. When it fails, it can cause hard/no starts with a cold engine in that era.
It'll also cause vapor lock in summer ... no hot start either. I had a 1980 that I limped home by putting a jumper in the fuel pump relay socket and lifting the plate in the air box until I could hear fuel coming out of the injectors before cranking it.

The K-Jetronic system is very sensitive for vacuum leaks because the gas distributor depends on it.

Obama enforced that nonsense. Luckily you can get around it with racing gas jugs.
EPA regulations since 2009, to prevent gas vapor emissions, but they're pretty easy to modify to work correctly
