I still wish Tolkien had written the scene where Aragorn came to Bree on a procession of Gondorian knights and Dunedain rangers. The reactions of Butterbur and the other Breefolk would have been priceless.

I don't think it was necessary, nor would it be very fitting to his character to flaunt all of that. He would probably balk at the deference from these people who knew him as nothing but Strider.

When I was younger, I would have instantly chosen the immortality of an Elf. And although Elves are cool, beautiful and wise, right now I'd go with the extended lifespan of a Duneadain :) Live life to the fullest, learn and see everything I can, and then lay my life down fully content, like the Numenorean Kings of old, before world-weariness sets in.
I completely agree. Also, from a practical perspective, the task of the Dunedain Rangers (the ones in Arnor) appeals to me a lot. Trained soldiers, but skilled in bushcraft and tracking, fighting in small groups to protect the North from the terrors of Angmar.
Dunedain are the best race in middle earth
For me now it's the Dwarves at this point.
I think that some of the the Dúnedain of the North joined Aragorn's Court in Gondor and others helped with resetteling and governing the re-established Kingdom of Arnor and became the noble upper class of that Kingdom

Would be cool if many decades later Osgiliath was finally rebuilt and became a place for all the peoples of middle earth and the first thing they did was hold a massive festival to honour the descendents of the faithful, including Aragorn, the grey company and all the dunedain rangers, alongside all the veteran gondorians who held osgiliath and those who fought at the black gate. They could all cheers under the statue of Boromir!
Extended Numenorean lifeapan for me. Being immortal in a world compromised mostly of mortals would be sad. You'd make relationships with people only to watch them grow old and die, one after the next. It would be a cold and lonely existence.
It would only be that way if you look at life as one long chapter rather than many.

Great question! There were bits and hints towards this one addressed by Tolkien. Who has the greater gift of the Children of Illuvatar? Those with immortal life, living in the physical world, or those of the 2nd born who get to dwell with God (Eru)? Whereas the Numenoreans, were greatly envious of the Eldar, it would ultimately be the Eldar who would be jealous of the gift of men.
Great video... The Dunedin are some of the coolest characters in the books. I love it when you guys do deep dives into Middle Earth history and bring it to life for us. Personally I probably would want the extended lifespan of the Dunedin so that I could have the time to learn and do all the things that interest me but still have the time to relax and enjoy life. Being immortal like the elves seems cool, but eventually you'd get to the point of seeing so much evil in the world over time that you'd get discouraged by the world. I feel like the Dunedin had the perfect lifespan as they could live long enough to make a difference in the lives of Men in the long-term, but wouldn't live so long that they could truly become discouraged by the evils of the world.
I always wonder about the Dunedain women in the north. The new, little Dunedainians had to be coming from somewhere. There had to be more than just Rangers wandering around the countryside.
There really is only 1 Woman of the Dunedain Rangers discussed being Gilraen the Fair, Mother of Aragorn. Her most famous known thing about her is the following: Ónen i-Estel Edain, ú-chebin estel anim or "I gave Hope (Estel, Aragorn's name when he was a child) to the Dunedain, I have kept no hope for myself."
Since I have heard about these characters they became my favorites! Mysterious Rangers of the North, from long decended people! Epic as Shit!

What a video. I've always felt a bit disappointed that The Dunedin were omitted from the Jackson trilogy. Maybe one day, they'll get their moment on the big screen.

@@Will.Flavellstill the replacement of the rangers and men of Gondor gathered by Aragorn by a ghost army that cheapened the Rohirim's sacrifice is by far the thing that stung the most. Making the elves ahow up at Helm's Deep was a nice touch tho.

In this case, Aragorn's rise was a breath of peace and prosperity to mitigate the human decay in the Third Age. The kings who came after Aragorn acted like Denethor, for example.
I think that if there was technological advance in fourth age: I imagine that the military aspect must have developed even more. Just like what Faramir says in the Two Towers: The Human Being valued the warrior's craft much more than wisdom/Ideas:
"For as the Rohirrim do, we now love war and valour as things good in themselves, both a sport and an end; and though we still hold that a warrior should have more skills and knowledge than only the craft of weapons and slaying, we esteem a warrior, nonetheless, above men of other crafts"
I imagine then that the Humanity of the Fourth Age would be a mixture of civilization + barbarism. Similar to the Hyborian age of Conan the Barbarian. Fantastic realms, but full of wars/violence. Humanity no longer had a Sauron as an enemy, man became the Enemy of Man.
Didnt Eldarion, Aragorn's son lived a longer life than his father?
By 10 years yes. Aragorn was 200 and Eldarion was 210 when they died. However the decline would continue as Aragorn was the pinnacle of what had been and Men continued their long decline to where they would all be the same basically in terms of lifespans.
One thing to keep in mind is Aragorn choose to pass away while he was still aware of things. If Tolkien for example let him "die due to Age" Aragorn likely could have lived a decent bit longer.

I would choose the life of a Duindain. Being able to live until I freely choose death would be great. I can pass on when I'm ready, especially if I retain youth for a good amount of my life.
Dunedain all day. Plenty of time to do what you want but not an eternity of watching the world come and go.

I think an extended lifespan, like that of the Dunedain, would be ideal if it also means being able to stay active and healthy for a longer period of time, like Aragorn was. Gives you lots of time to travel, experience new things, learn... Generally appreciate and live life to its fullest.
Being immortal like the Elves would certainly take away all your worries of not being able to experience everything you want in your time, but once you've experienced all there is to be experienced, I think that the boredom and monotony would eventually be overwhelming. And while dying isn't pleasant, I'd rather have that at some point rather than forgetting what it means to live your life to the fullest and lingering on forever until the end of times.
I say that if you're getting bored with a long life, that represents a failure of imagination and ambition. But assuming my cryostasis works out, I guess I'll see.

If I could live forever, but die on the field of battle with honor like an elf, that’s pretty hard to beat.
Aragorn is one of my favorite characters. I'd love to be a Numenorian, one of those who remained faithful to the elves.

If you would always have good health and non-aging immortality, because there would be so many places and things to do. If not possible a extended life to make things better while I could.

It is interesting how on every video that I have seen about LOTR people clame that Aragorn died at the age of 210, but in the appendix of the books it states that he died at the age of 190.

To choose. Am I healthy or sickly. Healthy enough to enjoy life and stay active is a blessing. Otherwise I’m hoping it’s quick and painless. Both my parents went slow but were active till the end. I never want to be a shadow of my real life. I would call that a nightmare but does anyone have control of that? I’d choose an Elf’s life as when weakened they could just leave and go to the halls. It’s what I’ve read anyway. Maybe then I could go chase those hairy women. lol lol

I think if i was given the choice between the "immortal" life of the elves and the mortal life of men, I'd pick men. Men are not bound to Arda and thus their destiny is to venture beyond the world and into the presence of The One and amongst the Ainor. Thus it was called the gift of Illuvatar. Not the curse. I know i wouldn't really know that, but I'd be curious about "the unknown" all the same. Would i choose a short mortal life or an extended one is ultimately irrelevant to be honest. Though i admit a shorter life would provide a bigger drive to do as much good as i am capable of doing as quickly as possible. Nevertheless short or long, I'd choose a mortal life.

I'd prefer to be Dunedin rather than Elves, I'd rather live a long life than be immortal. I wouldn't want to end up being extremely distant from humanity as Elves that become immortal become.

I’d be a numenorean average life is to small immortal is to long so numenorean is the sweet spot and i’d try to be a scholar of sometime and pass down my wisdom in hope i could lead men to a bright future
I would love to be immortal, I have said this for years and when people ask me why I say " To See What Happens " I have always wanted to go into space and travel to other worlds and to see what humanity makes of itself. Right now we are horrible as a society but we are making great strides in the space industry and hopefully one day we will move past our tendency to treat our fellow man like crap and move out into the stars. The only issue I have with immortality is watching loved ones die. I have already lost many friends and close family at young ages and it has made me a bit bitter and I really only care about my close family I have left with the exception of animals and children who I still have a soft spot for so if I was immortal and my family wasn't I would probably turn into a cold uncaring robot of a person.
I would like an immortal life as a fine young man. Other than that, a mortal life wherein I die a normal lifespan.

Considering rings of power will retcon a lot of history. I’m guessing they’ll go back to their perfectly diverse and inclusive realm and be gay.
I'm a transhumanist with a cryonics contract. I'm already trying for immortality, so put me down for elf. It's the obvious choice because continuing to exist beats ceasing to exist.
