Ursula's Transformation Into Vanessa Evolution (1987 - 2023) | The Little Mermaid

- this is the evolution of ursula's transformation into vanessa, from the 1987 workprint to the final 1989 movie. to the 2023 live action remake! the 2nd one is labeled "exact date unknown" because the original full file is listed as november 1987, but after watching it and seeing how much rough animation that is in there, i highly doubt it is from the same month as the first one. it is likely from somewhere in between early - mid 1988 based on how much rough animation was completed compared to later the little mermaid workprints.

The animated transformation remains unmatched. Ursula morphing into Vanessa is something I missed in live action... Pat Caroll's performance is a masterpiece 🙏🏻
Still left wondering sometimes how Divine would've sounded if she'd lived long enough to record Ursula after serving as the inspiration for her. Still, she originated the role of Edna Turnblad before she passed so that's still something.
Obvious reasons..Halle.cant do an evil laugh.
Agreed. We don't get that in live action.
@@agenttheater5🆕 NEW
The actual part where she morphs into Vanessa was added late in the making of the movie, the animators wanted to make it more clear early on that vanessa was Ursula
I like both for different reasons. I like the seriousness of the original ursula and the butterfly she kept for her spell. I like the new one where they don't show us what she's doing so for people who haven't seen the movie are in for a surprise. I also like how she's a bit more humorous. I just love both really. Just wish pat could have stayed long enough to see this.
I just realized, there's a visual hint missing in the 2023 version. Ursula didn't choose the name Vanessa at random. She used a Vanessa butterfly. By changing the ingredient to whatever that was, they kinda miss the hint.
I think the butterfly is in the little heart potion
As the guide book does state that she has a butterfly potion in her grasp
But yes. They could have made it more visible
Woah... I actually never even knew there WAS such thing as a "Vanessa butterfly!" That's such a cool little Easter egg! 🦋🤯
Noticed a few things:
1. The tentacles almost have a mind of their own when she needs them to
2. Disney removed the bit where she called Ariel a Tramp cuz that’s considered something you probably shouldn’t say in a kids movie
3. In the Cartoon she violently searches for the potion ingredients and Disney expanded on that this time
@@nager1997 tramp - a person who travels from place to place on foot in search of work or as a vagrant or beggar.
Ariel is technaclly homeless without prince eric
So technaccly shes a beggar
And she has walked barefoot
@@nager1997tramp also refers to the sound of heavy footsteps
So the whole feet thing too
@@nager1997yes a tramp refers to that too
But still a tramp can refer to the above statements
@@nager1997ok ok
But do you really think
Disney would refer to prostitute instead of a walking person
@@nager1997 also
The term tramp = prostitue is refered to
In the united states
Little mermaid does not take place
In the united states
Therefore
It may not refer to as prostitue
I liked how they re-used a lot of the original lines from the original animated movie.
I feel like it can sometimes cause problems at times and not allowing an actor flex with their portrayals, will smith as genie is good example of this where it’s obvious when the director allows him to go all out or when to act like Robin Williams
Not necessarily. They might be the same lines, but how the actor delivers them is up to them. They may try to imitate the original or deliver them their own way.
@@brannen3355 EXACTLY!
@@brannen3355 which is fine however I have rarely seen that done well with these remakes so far most of the time it feels like they just say those lines becasue they feel like they have to but they don't bother re-inventing them for the remakes so it ends up feeling flat. I can only remember a few scenes in the remakes as a whole that work and most of the time it's when the actors are given original lines to work with and with those I can feel like the actors are more invested in them
A Villianous Transformation from Elderly to Youthful.
I always loved the little addition Pat did with the snort as she was transforming. It always made me laugh.
I am OBSESSED with you channel! So fascinating to see the way the movie developed.
aww thank you so much !!
"But she's not going to get away from me that easily. This one's too important." can't believe this line was reused a few times originally before
it was finally changed to the one we got. "At this rate, he'll be kissing her by sunset for sure! Well, it's time Ursula takes matters into her own tentacles!"
i love how the final 1989 scene with the new changes conveys so much in a great scene: ursula's sore loser attitude, hypocrisy, her fatal flaw of impulsive vengeance, her terrifying strength, her magical skill with a 3-ingredient spell, the butterfly as a hint for what's about to happen, a line that foreshadows her victory over triton, some great sound mixing/blending, and of course the cherry on top: evil Jodi Benson *chef's kiss*
The Transformation in 1989 is better than the remake 🙂
The remake is supposed to add mystery and plus they blee their budget on halles dxpensive locs
But her freak out in the remake was absolutely amazing
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Oh, there it is. I got it."
Kinda funny)
Not really..
Yeah that was so funny😂😂😂
2023 Ursula: Oh, There It Is, I Got It! 3:05
lmao in the live they really forgot why there’s a butterfly in the original. its supposed to be a symbolism of Rebirth and fun fact there’s a butterfly named Vanessa.
they messed up
Pat Carroll and Melissa McCarthy ARE Ursula!💜🖤
Can you do an evolution montage video of “You’re too late!” where Vanessa turns back to Ursula?
Hey, when Ursula threw the butterfly in her cauldron, is that why her disguise’s name was Vanessa? There’s a butterfly species known as Vanessa so maybe she threw that exact species of butterfly into the cauldron and that’s why her name’s Vanessa. Just a theoryz
Ursula and Grimhilde both used disguises.
Grimhilde disguised herself as a creepy crone to give SnowWhite that poison apple.
Ursula disguised herself as a beautiful human woman named Vanessa to prevent Eric from kissing Ariel before the third sunset.

Where did you find all those workprints? 😮
archive.org, they were taken down but i saved then while they were still up!
Why were they taken down
@@kaitlynrowena5463 i don’t know
As a kid I always felt so bad for Ursula being such a fat woman, so I was happy when she got to transform and look more like Ariel!
I like that they cut it from the 2023 version as her morphing is literally nightmare fuel
And it adds alot if mystery to what ursula is doing
For the young kids
Not for the ones who have seen the original one. The ones who have seen the original one already knew what she was turning into.
@@morganghostbusters-egonfanagain for the younger kids who have not yet seen the original movie
@@DavidDickeee I know.
isn’t it thats how should a villain make you feel, kids these days are getting soft as marshmallows
I actually like the nightmare fuel in the original more, it’s a scene that you can easily remember, everyone knows the transformation scene from Vanessa to Ursula and that’s done well too and giving extreme villainous facial expressions on Vanessa’s face when Ariel gains her voice back
odd question: is the 1989 Vanessa spell 3 ingredients or four? two bottles, the butterfly, and the necklace (i mean of course she isn't going to give Ariel the good spell that's more beautiful and can breathe underwater)
It’s 3 ingredients, 2 bottles and the butterfly. The necklace wasn’t part of the spell itself, but Ursula used it to make her human form sound like Ariel.
Wedding crash also workprint?
Ursula's transformation is an instant plastic surgery.
Ursula: no, no, no, no, no, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... oh that is, i got it
I have a demo what you dont showed yet where can i send you
you can send it to my email, it’s bubbles4everluv@gmail.com :)
It seems like the live action is trying too hard to make the scene comedic when it doesn’t need to be. The original scene is already a little funny, but for the most part it takes the threat of Ursula seriously.
Also, side note, the remake scene is a perfect example of trying to do what the original movie did and your own thing at the same time. And it just doesn’t work. The lines copied from the original aren’t delivered with the same passion and intensity, and the new lines come off as awkward.
I miss the butterly in the live action
Princess Olivia and Jose carioca and panchito they love me forever and ever
lol
Hocus lotus
airis Vanessa
The little tramp?😅 This a disney movie
Tramp is nothing compared to what Ursula calls her in the foreign dubs. In the foreign dubs, Ursula calls Ariel much more fun and colorful choice names. Everything from" tramp" or "hussy" all the way up to "slut" and "bitch".
