  • With the UK becoming the latest country to do so - and with a fifth of the world in lockdown - nations around the world are beginning to follow a similar pattern in terms of how they’re tackling the coronavirus. Albeit on different schedules.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
In this video we look at different approaches taken to tackling Covid-19: social distancing, lockdowns, mass testing and herd immunity. These are different approaches to the same issue: stoping the spread and trying to flatten the curve, that’s the idea that in fighting this pandemic - we need to slow the rate of infections to give hospitals the chance to deal with patients without being overwhelmed - as well as giving us more time to find remedies and vaccines.

Well, as 80% of those infected will have mild to no symptoms, it's really about just not spreading the disease and risking other people's lives than your own life. It's amazing that people only think of themselves and their personal risk in terms of disease.

Italy's deaths and infection increasing is because of the cases that were already infected before the lockdown showing up in tests. The lock down is starting to work now that it has been 2 weeks. There's a time lag associated with this.

Also truth and second reason of todays problems is that, we all in west world are first time confronted with big epidemy. We were proud of the antivirus measures. Roman Hanajik the first cases in china is raised to WHO in early january, and WHO has warned the world by then. but i dont think the west media has had the 'right amount' of coverage of the story for whatever reason. Then near January 24, when china shutdown and immobilised a city of 11 million people, it should have been a second warning sign. Yet again massively overlooked by media and govs. Then again when the death figure was high in feburary, no significant action was taken by many other countries. Even the west missed the signs in january, but started reacting back in feburay, it should have been prevented in many countries.

Supermarkets are putting lives at risk by not protecting Staff. Checkouts should have perspex barriers in place between them and the customers. Staff should be provided with masks, gloves, wipes and sanitizer but are not.
    Poor show!

    • @johnwang9914
      @johnwang9914 4 года назад +4

Well, the Canadian Supermarkets are installing persplex barriers as well as closing alternate tills. Gloves in public are useless as the transfer mechanism is touching your face with contaminated hands and with gloves you just replace touching your face with contaminated hands with touching your face with contaminated gloves and the virus remains active longer on the synthetic material of the gloves than on the skin where Lactobacillus bacteria maintains a slightly acidic environment which will eventually break down the virus's protein and fat shell.. There is a global shortage of masks and other PPE, there isn't even enough for hospital staff who are encountering infected individuals, someone in public such as the cashier should be mostly meeting uninfected people with only a chance of meeting an infected person so PPE's such as masks are basically wasted when used in public while they are desperately needed at hospitals. It is inconsiderate and selfish to insist on public use of masks when there simply isn't the necessary supply. Perhaps once the larger factories in China start producing more masks then maybe broader use of masks may be possible but till then, they are needed at hospitals more.
Now, what I think are missing from our grocery stores aside from quantity limits on problem items would be marks on the floor to indicate the proper places to stand apart in the cashier line and arrows on the aisles to indicate direction of travel so customers are not passing within close proximity of each other when traveling in opposite directions.

Also european countries such as Austria and czech republic are finally catching up and implementing these measures helping them flatten the curve.

Britain is supposedly an advanced economy but it can't get its act together: no testing, no protection for the public or NHS staff...The govt says it's following the science yet has ignored the global health specialists like WHO: test test test. Why?? It's common sense to test the public, find out who's got it, isolate them, track their contacts, test them, isolate who tests positive - treat early those who show symptoms - and keep going. The tracking app is fab! Why aren't we doing this ffs? Our lame duck government have turned the British people into sitting ducks.

Let me tell you about Greece, where I live, then. The government was almost leading inside the EU in taking social distancing measures early enough, starting with closing schools and progressing to a partial lockdown that became almost complete a couple of days ago. Figures are currently at around 800 reported cases with 20 deaths and there are signs of the curve flattening. What was judged correctly is that the sooner you take more "extreme" measures, the less they will need to last. It's ironic, but those who seem to want to balance economic concerns with human lives will end up doing more harm to the economy as well. It is a common occurrence with individualistic thinking though, like a boss who blackmails a sick employee into going to work and only manages to get all of their workforce sick.
Only problem with Greece is that viewing its curve alone shows a magic picture: the government probably felt compelled to follow a drastic approach towards social distancing because they have been at the forefront of dismantling public healthcare with neoliberal policies over the last decade. So we are left with such a weak healthcare system that even a moderate amount of cases will cause it to collapse. Actually, the system seemed to work beyond its capabilities even before the pandemic and it only works as it does thanks to efforts of some doctors to offer more than they typically have to. So now, with leading media being all-too government friendly, we don't hear about the need to strengthen healthcare: We see a campaign that overstates the actions of those - very few, by now - who dismiss calls for social distancing, while government officials scold the public as if everybody is out in the streets spreading coronavirus, talking incessantly about "individual responsibility" - the running joke is that even in a pandemic, the Greek state thinks we need even more cops instead of doctors. We are constantly reminded to stay at home, but many workers do not have the option, as they have trouble with bosses blackmailing them into working in unsafe conditions, as governments have dismantled syndicalism and workers' rights, effectively giving bosses a free reign. Yet, this doesn't seem to find its way in all news and media talk about antisocial behavior that endangers us all; the concept of "individual responsibility" only seems to concern people who took a walk in the park. At the same time, lack of testing is causing serious concern; early on, the suggestion was that only those who have serious symptoms should seek to be tested and treated, and the situation has not improved at all. Yesterday there where reports about two persons who died of covid-19 and were only tested afterwards, without having been admitted to a hospital in the meantime. One had asthma, but had been told to stay home, presumably. The number where people have to call for advice if they think they are sick reportedly has a waiting time of hours. For the 800 reported cases, it is reasonable to assume that there are up to 10,000 infections already, but no testing on a sample of the population has been performed to find out. all in all, the government response seems partly effective on some levels, but in terms of healthcare response, the system is so inadequate that the government seems especially keen to repeat to citizens the same insinuation every day: "if this explodes, it will be your fault", which it will clearly be the other way around.
So, social distancing is a necessary component, but let's not make it into a substitute for lack of healthcare and social policies. People in power kept pushing for a society where healthcare is just a commodity because they always felt that poor people getting sick would not affect rich people as well. It's time to force them to admit they were wrong.

If we take into account the incubation period and the time it takes for more serious symptoms to occur and for someone to seek medical health, we conclude that it takes 10 days or a bit more for any measures to show effects. Likewise, any day's number of infections does not correspond to the true infections taking place at that time. We see them in the following days. That's why Italy's infection rates kept increasing even after lockdown. And it finally tends to flatten now, according to the timeframe mentioned above, albeit at high numbers of infections/deaths. Another contributing factor to deaths rising sharply in Italy was that due to the delay in issuing a lockdown, healthcare system was overwhelmed and unable to take care of each serious case. With such a disease, probably half of the people who will need to enter intense medical care will survive and I guess all people who need intense medical care but cannot enter it will die. This is enough for anyone to understand how callous it was to let the infection spread at exponential rates for days in countries like the UK, while speaking of herd immunity as code for just letting people get sick uncontrollably.

This is also the time to absorb the idea that harsher pandemics can happen and maybe value health and equality as pillars of a functioning resilient society, which I would like to see.

In New Zealand, we have tested very few, and did not lock down flights (properly) until a few days ago. Literally the advice for hundreds of people was to self isolate coming from overseas, but who would do that? Compared to Australia and South Korea, there has been very little testing, so our numbers look low, and only selective info about our cases is released. We have 2 rest homes affected, but we are assured everything is ok. We are only going into winter here, so maybe the hot weather has helped with people getting infected and recovering without seeing a doctor, but without any testing to see if there is some “herd immunity” we don’t know.

  • @davebellamy4867

4:12 Italy had rises in cases and deaths after the lockdown. So did Wuhan and Hubei in China! Lockdown was 23/24 January and peak new cases was not until 5 February. That is 2 weeks. So on 5 February, the new cases/day was almost 4,000. At that point the daily new cases started to decelerate. HOwever the declared case total on 24 Jan was under 1,000 and it ended at over 50,000. SO you still got an icrease of 50x. In S Korea it was around 10x between lockdowns and end of the epidemic curve. It takes time to work but in the absence of these measures, almost everyone would have been infected within weeks.

in my country, we only do our social distancing in quarantine for 14 days, we cannot do lockdowns like other countries because the government considers it will have an impact on the economy of our country later, with this virus the value of our currency has decreased even one of the news the lowest currency in Asia. I just hope that by doing social distancing can break the chain of the spread of the corona virus in the world.
And about herd immunity I think this strategy makes no sense, because why? people who have low immunity will lose the battle and of course the ever increasing death rate figures, so please dont be crazy.

Test everyone, anyone positive at testing isolate in hotel room until they have negative tests or become ill enough to need to go to a hospital. I don't believe people who test positive should be allowed to self isolate. Too risky. I think the hotels would be glad for the use of their rooms. Perhaps some of the health insurance companies and major corporations etc could kick in $$ to help here. Might have a couple of doctors or nurses in the hotel to check on people. Retest periodically some people. If negative they can leave.
Hospitalize the sick people who test positive and need to be under a doctor's care.
We could use the toll booths to have drive through testing sites in some cities. I know it sounds preposterous but seems to work in other cities. Maybe do a trial in LA or NYC.
The way Korea did the testing is very low cost in the long run. Using those barriers to protect health care workers. Genius. Why don't we have those here in US?
In 14 days do another mass testing.
Keep up with social distancing and using common sense approaches for keeping spread from happening. MHO

    ...?
    Whaaaa ....?
    Social what?
China, Italia, España: in none of these countries is English an official language.
On Monday, an improved translation of the original meaning was first encouraged by the W.H.O.:
    《Physical distancing》
I've never been as social with my neighbours as these past 12 days here in España? But?
We maintain the physical distancing from one another: 5 meters (or equally, if both of us are holding a vara outstretched, we must assure that (theoretically) neither of us could possibly be able to make contact with the other's vara.
    [Vara: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_customary_units#Vara_(unit_of_length) ]
It is similar to Inglès hockey-stick, or a Gallic hurley-attack weapon.
Besides? The Aryan Orangutan chose to mimic the Macaroni poshboi, and the paddy copied the Orangutan.
France's concept is an utter failure. Just look at their figures running completely out of control, and ever rising.
Going outside to sport? = *fail*
More than one person in a group? = *fail*...
Just why do you think we in Spain called the 1918 novella virus 《the fronch influenza》 (which it was).
España has form regarding this: Spain was the only European country to truthfully report on the 1918 pandemic that originated in that training camp in Kansas, where the first case was recorded in Abril, 1918.
No other (¿great?) world power was willing to permit any media coverage whatsoever, given the strict prohibition on any truthfulness during the wartime censorship juntas in ... well? just about every other country in the world bar España ý Los Páises Bayjos: the only two significant kingdoms to successfully stay out of WWI.
(España was one of the most affected European countries with close to 8 million people infected in May 1918 and more than 200,000 deaths (despite official figures reducing victims to "only" 147,114 people).
It's the second wave of novella viruses that become deadly and lethal: just as Woodrow Wilson found out at Versailles, where he eventually contracted the 1918 Kansas novella virus while signing the armistice.
All told, the three waves of the fronch flu eventually killed one in 20 humans globally, but figures aren't known... because "health care services" simply didn't exist as we know them today).
Here, in España, the war on this virus we name it *Operación Balmis*; and our commander, Lieutenant Generalè Miguel Ángel Villarroya, who addresses his Troops each and every morning, greeting us as his Soldiers, and who reminds us daily that the *Frontline* lies in wait (to kill us) right on the other side of all of our front-doors outside the family casa.
Not in some obscure, far away, 《hospital》.... that most have never seen the inside of and have neither zero concept of what happens in there..... wherever it may be.
In this Nacionalè War Effort, we are led by General Rustytown's boss: Captain General of the Defence of the Spanish Kingdom (and who is equally the individual who first imposed the 《Estado del Alarma》 in this Kingdom).
Their name is Felipe of the Six.

The apps need not be a privacy risk. The app could establish a private/public key randomly when installed much as a Bitcoin wallet would. It would then be this public key that would be the person's identifier and interactions with other mobile devices to register contact would be signed by the private key as would location and timestamp data sent to any central server that may exist (a central server is also optional). When diagnosed, the patients public key could be broadcasted out with an appropriate authentication signature by the authorities to prevent false information from being distributed and the respective apps can then consider their contact and perhaps secondary and tertiary contact history to evaluate risks. The apps could also have a vitals recorder where the individual records their own temperatures and any public readings are also signed by the app of the person taking the public reading. With a newly minted public/private key, the risk would simply be evaluated as higher for 14 days of relative isolation and no symptoms being noted hence generating a new random "identity" to circumvent a high risk reading would not be a benefit and the risks of newly minted keys can be considered of increasingly higher risk as the app's adoption becomes prevalent.
The usage of apps should not be limited by privacy concerns as such concerns are easily circumvented.
